The number that you have beside your name shows your activity and every 100 activity points i think you get a star..So if you were inactive or your posts started getting deleted you will lose your activity points and start losing stars..Check the FAQS for further info.

It is a good idea to read the mylot guidelines for posting a couple times and then just keep trying to make intelligent replies to other people's discussion and start interesting ones of your own and soon enough you will have your stars back. Stars can come and go. Don't feel bad.

I would think you just have to get your reputation back, keep responding a lot, provide good discussions and good responses (not just one liners but helpful informative ones) and contribute positively to the mylot community! Good luck. :-)
