My husband's grandmother died today. He is not upset at all because he has not seen her in over 10 years. This is his Grandmother on his fathers side who lives in New York, his parents are divorced and he has not lived in New York since he was 6, has not visited New York since his early teens. He remembers seeing her once or twice since then, but not since he was at least 15. I had an Aunt die a few months ago. I had only seen her 5 times in my entire life (I am 29) because they always lived out of state. I was touched by her death but not really affected by it.
How do you handle these types of situations?

I have had a few occasions where someone in my family has passed on, but because I have not seen them much since growing up it has not affected me as maybe others would expect it too, this has made me feel guilty on a number of occasions. I tend to get more upset for the other members of the family who were that little bit closer. I dont think its bad that it doesnt affect someone, it does not mean that they do not care its just that the closer you are to someone the harder it hits you, but when you have not spent much time with the person and so do not really know them as much it does not seem to be as bad.

This all depends on who it is. If the person was a child or a parent that had young children who will be affected, then yes I get upset. If the person was old then I usually don't get all that upset by it.
