During the last part of 2007 I had to put my adorable cocker spaniel, chihuahua mixed breed dog to sleep. She was suffering and the Vet said there was nothing more I could do for her. Although she was 14 years old, I wasn't ready to let her go, but I couldn't stand to see her suffer - her trachea collapsed and she couldn't breathe and no matter what I did I couldn't get the airway to open up to allow air flow. I stayed with her until she was gone and cremated her body. We threw her ashes along a strip of beach on the PCH where we'd been taking her the last year, as it was a spot where she's lay her head out the window, listening to the waves, watching the birds and eventually falling asleep. McCoy as I knew her was gone... Then in January I was driving by an animal shelter in Ventura County. I stopped and fell in love with a tiny Sheba Inu mixed breed. She's been with us ever since. She is a hand full, often needing wide open spaces and running room. I have been watching the Dog Whisperer and have picked up many helpful suggestions. My discussion today revolves around leashes or more specifically collars. I need a collar/leash that won't affect this little dog's trachea. I was told that sometimes dog's trachea's are damaged by tugging on and pulling on a tight collar or chocker chain. It is a problem with many small dogs. I have been trying to find a leash/collar combination but so far have not found one anyway - I know the American Kennel club uses them at their dog show but have been unable to identify them well enough to bring up a site that sells them. Any suggestions?

collar - collar for dog
Hallo kollenwilson:D I am very happy to be your friend. Welcome at myLot. I am very sorry about your chihuahua. I'm sure she was adorable. I've been living with pets since i was a kid and i know how it's feel to lost one. But there is always a cure for it that we adopt another. it won't be the same, because each animal have each character. I still remember my old cat that gets crash by a car infront of my house 11 years ago. His name is Ipus, he like to kiss me when he come home. And then after he kiss, he just run in rush so that i can't kiss him back (i think he was shy) cute isn't it? But right now, i have 2 company 1 siberian husky and 1 cat. (they gets along pretty well). I am so so happy with them. Both of them always wait for me when i finish working. It's cure my tired of working Now, about the collar, I notice when i take Rado(my husky to the beach) he always in such a rush running and drags me behind LOL with the type of ring collar. He is getting trouble with breathing and i feel very sorry for him. Then i surf trough the internet and then i got an idea to looking for a different collar for a runner dogs, and i found this. Its just perfect! and make him look dashing too. when i pull back i only pull his chess, and no pain in the neck

im very sorry about your loss. i had the same problem with a cat of mine. we tried to keep her as long as i we could, but soon we reliezed it was better to just let her go. we stoped using collars for the same reason. we now use harness. it doesn't go anywhere near the neck of the dog. so i highly suggest that. it goes around the body and under the belly and legs. its really effective and doesn't damage the throat. i blieve we purchased our at petco or petmart, i can't remember. but i highly reccomend it! hope i helped =]

Thank you I have a harness but it is not necessarily good for correcting undesirable behavior. I was looking for something that simply loops over her head and then tightens when you pull on it. I just didn't want to get a metal chocker chain. I will continue looking, thanks for your comments

martingale collars are good for control without over-tightening. You can get them with a swivel. You can also buy them with a fleece lining to be soft on the dog's neck. I've picked some collars up at dog shows before with the padded liners. They're wonderful for sensitive dogs. You can look for shows near you by looking at the AKC website and UKC websites. I found my collars at ukc show - www.ukcdogs.com see events
