What is the colored star by someone's name?

I have a few more questions about MyLot:
I assume the number to the right in parenthesis is how often someone has posted. Do you get more money for "best response?"
What are the colored stars with numbers to the left of certain people's names? What do the colors signify, what do the numbers signify?
Thanks for the info!

The number in parentheses is the number of points, which does not necessarily correspond to the number of posts (you don't get points for every post).
You get a star once you reach 100 points. The color of the star corresponds with the number inside. Blue 10 is the highest, red nine is next, etc.
If you look at the posts, you will see a plus (+) and minus (-) symbol next to each of them. People can rate one another's posts either good or bad, and those ratings are what determine the star color/number.

Still sounds a little confusing. Do these stars have any significance, or simply used as indicators?

What is still confusing to you?
The star itself is just a quick indicator that you've received at least 100 points, a milestone of sorts, no longer a 'newbie', if you will.
If you continually get rated with a +, you will get a higher number. If some rate you with a -, your number in the star will go down.
It can go up and down throughout the day, or stay the same.
Is just a very quick indicator to all just what people think of your posts, I guess. It has no monetary value o anything.

This very helpful information. I am a newbie too. I guess the key to a good rating it to write discussions with substance and detail as well as spell check. I realixe you are not able to edit a post once you send it.

The colored stars are reputation points. As mentioned in the earlier responses, the points build when someone rates your question or response. Some people feel it is a bit like a popularity contest (and maybe it is... but regardless I gave you a + for a thought provoking question!)
The number in parenthesis is the number of responses to threads/# of posts. When you get to 100 , you'll see your star and your reputation points. Not everyone rates, so don't be disappointed if your star is low, just try to give quality responses and your rating should increase.

Thanks for everyone's info! It's greatly appreciated.
I do wish you could edit after posting because sometimes I get so excited about posting a question or response and forget to check it before I send it! So far, that seems to be the only bad thing I find about this site.
It pays decent and is fun, and I like it a lot.
Thanks again, have a great week! :)

If people mark you with a - (because they don't think your post is good, for whatever reason), your number can go down.
