When you look around your place...does it reflect who you are?

Many of you who respond here comment that many of my discussions get your 'thinkers' working overtime. Being that it is 10:39 PM and I'll be signing off shortly I thought I lighten things up a little.
We've been doing some re-decorating lately because we believe that the outer space we occupy is a reflection of who we are at different stages of life. One of our services is to assist clients in de-cluttering and organizing their spaces. Sometimes all it takes to create that change is when people awaken to the idea that the outer is a reflection of the inner. How do you feel about that idea?
So having said that if you were a stranger walking into your home or workspace...does it reflect who you are? Or are there aspects that are not really YOU...but you haven't had a chance to bring things into alignment yet?
I'll start the ball rolling here by saying that David and I know for sure our home and yard reflects who we are. Every room, nook and cranny has some symbolic/spiritual reminder of our shared experiences. Loving nature as we do our home has an 'organic' feel to it. We also love the Southwest and Aboriginal art and the colors and decor show that as well.
Being we have not chosen to live in the Southwest because we love Canada...we do the next best thing and bring the Southwest influence into our home. Our walls are painted in soft yellows...and the kitchen is a combination of orange and Terra Cotta. Our great room has 25 foot cathedral ceilings with brick and wood. I could go on...but I think you get the idea.
I have included a photo of just one of many Aboriginal art collectibles..a true reflection of who we are. So how about you and your space..care to comment?

Maybe you have a big house where you can decorate so many. It is your reflection I would say. What you have in your house is what you are. My place is a small flat in the city. I like it even it is just enough for the three of us. I like framed art which I personally prepare, of course I buy the frame and do the framing. I like native decorations, and cabinet made of wood with natural color. As you stay longer in your flat, it is getting more small as you keep on puting and buying new things. Our house in the province is so airy, near the mountain, and there are plants around the house. It was a two hour ride from the city and I used to go home only once in a while. But if given another chance to have another unit, I want it clutter free. I want everything in order, but with the busy things that we are in I cannot just make it as I wanted it to be. Nice decor.

Hello...and thanks for your input. I appreciate your views and apologize for my tardy reply. My hubby and I have been busy with work commitments and I have not had a spare moment to be here.
Anyway, I am doing my best to respond to every response...even if it is months after the original discussion.
I appreciate your desire for a clutter free house. I think clutter is also subjective. We have a considerable amount of collectibles in our home...and yes, it is quite spacious so we are able to display our memorabilia without it feeling cluttered to us.
Thanks for your comments about our decor. Hope to chat again.
Best regards,
Raia

cool service!
I would say that, yes, my surroundings do reflect who I am. Our home has something reflecting our religion in every room and likely on near every wall...
the surroundings also reflect my musical interests - with a couple fiddles, a dulcimer, a wurlitzer organ and an 1856 upright piano... the bookcases are filled with historical religious works.
they also reflect that I am a mother and that we live a frugal life.

Hi again..
Sorry I have been so remiss is commenting to your views on this topic. I appreciate your insightful observations. From some of our other chats your home truly does sound like a reflection of who you are and what you believe and that doesn't surprise me. Lovely offering...

I wish my place was like you, but then again I still don't have a house to consider and call as my own.
But my room does reflect who I am and what I am doing, you could see books that I enjoy reading and some designs that I posted on my wall. You'll also see my guitars in it, I have two guitars with one electric and an acoustic. I love music, I think that's what I enjoy doing the most whenever I'm alone and want to enjoy my OWN music!;) I do like what my new room looks like right now, it pretty much expresses the simple side of me..
As for what we have outside, mostly you'll see different plant species and variations of faunas from herbs to flower-blooming plants!;) Not much is put outside, but we also keep birds as pets. Our house is just a typical one, with garden and lawn that's just right for a simple family to own!;)

Hi...and thanks for sharing your space and what it reflects to you. I love discussions like these because it gives us a chance to learn a little more about each other in personal ways.
Your home and yard sounds like what you said it is..."Just right for a simple family to own."
Enjoy!

Well... your home definitely represent who you are. Paticulary if you own your own home.
If you don't... only your possessions represent who you are.
In the last 7 years... I did not had a proper home for 5 of those years. Even so I had a roof over my head... I never did call it home... because most of my possessions were in storage. I did live for two years in a 4 bedroom house (the one with the photos of me)... but without my possessions. I thought of it as "camping". Then I did spend two years in a one bedroom flat which was not big enough to bring all my stuff in. It was never considered as "home".
Lets put it this way...
A luxury hotel room in a scenic paradise would not feel like home to me.
But if I was living in a double garage with all my possessions neatly arranged around me... I would call it home.
Our possessions represent our past and who we are. Those who don't believe in possessions and like to live out of a suitcase are very shallow people and it will eventually come back and bite them as they get older.
Note...
Loving your possessions is not being materialistic. There is a fine balance between the two.

Hi again...
Your comments about our possessions representing our past and who we are is key. There is a lot in what you say about having meaningful possessions surrounding up and how that makes it feel like home. Even when I lived in apartments it was that fact that made my 'home' a haven every time I walked in the door. The same holds true today. The home David and I are in now has who we are in every nook and cranny. Every change we make to it or the yard creates a deeper bond with it.
Good input..thanks Aussies

It sounds like the approach you use for your clients to declutter might be a little like Feng-Shui? A thought there. I've never liked clutter and am constantly getting rid of the old (perhaps pave way for the new?)
My "work" area of where my computer is both functional and a bit decorative...and organized. In one shelf are my directories of The Photographer's Market and Writer's Market...also have some volumes on the top of the hutch...To add a bit of "decor" though I have things or a Native American theme, my Southwestern style lamp, and my figurines, including my wolf figurine (my totem animal) Adjacent to my computer desk I have just one of my enormous vision boards...then pasted all over my desk are print ups of 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 dollar bills plus a print up of the words.."Thoughts Become Things" --I include a photo of my computer area. Why I don't know but my little "mascot" that I keep on my scanner is of a stuffed rabbit toy..Wondering if that has some significance why I choose a rabbit...LOL
My bedroom is a real reflection of both my personality and of my religious path of Wicca/Pagan as I have on each "direction" wall a reflection of the symbolism of each direction according to Wicca...and for a bit of whimsy I have a bona fide Black Witches hat hanging from the middle of the ceiling...I also have my guitar hanging up on one wall...plus framed photos of mine, including copies of past covers where my photos were published--I store most of my photo work in my bedroom as well in containers...plus have a bookcase filled with my wiccan/pagan books...The color scheme is a custom color of deep turquoise blue on adjacent walls while on the other adjacent walls is custom color deep lavender.
My "Library" area is actually the hallway leading to the bathroom...only place I could store the floor to ceiling bookcases and every inch of space is filled with books..
While my apartment in general is not cluttered, neither does it have a "sterile" appearance..it's very much lived in...LOL

Hi Pye...and congrats on making your 6000th post. Sorry it has taken me a couple of weeks to start responding to this post. I have been here...but catching up on other discussions I haven't been too.
I like the sound of your place..and from what you are saying it does reflect you...your soul path...and most everything else that you hold dear. I appreciate the photo...always good to have visuals with a discussion like this.
Lived in places are where I like to be. I am not comfortable with Martha Stewart environments where everything is so 'perfect' it creates a superficial feel. Yes, we definitely include space clearing and Fund Shui principles when working with clients...even if that is not the original reason they contacted us. The outer reflects the inner idea.
Good input...how are the feet and legs doing?

When I lived in London my apartment was filled with hundreds of books, dozens of pictures and many decorative and ornamental items. I gave them all to charity when I moved. In my new accommodation I have 1 picture and 2 hand decorated mirrors. If you walked in you would see that I like to read, and that I use a computer. That is all. Maybe it does sum up who I am at this stage of my life.

Oh goody...my buddy and I are chatting again. I have missed being here too...especially my chats with you and a few other REALLY valuable friends here. I am so glad we have another way of keeping in touch...but this is a speedy way to connect and I miss Mylotting a lot.
I know I mentioned in our other exchange that I was planning to post a discussion but I felt a deep need to get back to my 'response for every response' before doing that. So I have been replying first...one I am caught up to the best of my knowing I will start a couple of new discussions. One will probably be a "Hi..back..how are you" one so I can get up to speed on the happenings in friends lives. Then I will do one of my other 'thinker' ones too. I'll drop by your site shortly so we can chat there as well.
Hope you and your honey and kids are doing well. David and I are great. Our friend is just down the street and we love having her close by. We eat most of our meals together...with David preparing them for us. He is a great cook and loves to do it. So we are pampered gals and she is loving the great food without having to prepare it.
So life is good...and I trust it is for you too! I sure hope so....you deserve the best and the way you talk about the love of your life you have the best...for you. Just as I have the best...for me. How blessed we are and I know you are as thankful as I am!
Big hugs and caring regards,

Wow two months and counting from the time you replied to this. I am soooo behind. Oh well I am doing my best to get caught up.
I loved hearing about your home and that it reflects you...and the photo is great. It does give me a feel for your space and what you love. The chairs and sofa look so comfy and I like the step shelves you have. Yes, from what I know of you it certainly does reflect who you are. Thanks for sharing again. Hope to be here more and chat this way for a change.
Take care and big hugs!

This is an interesting question. I had to think about it for a while, actually, because no answer really comes simply to me. :P
On one hand, it doesn't represent who I am as much as I would like it to. Part of this is simply the issue of renting, and not having freedom to put up things as much as I'd like, or paint and things like that. If I were decorating a home, it wouldn't have all white walls like this, to start with. I would like to have some pictures up and maybe a few anime posters or wall scrolls too. If I had proper space, I would have a lot more room for my spiritual items to stay set up instead of constantly being brought and and put away, and with proper storage space, things probably wouldn't be as messy.
On the other hand, the fact that my house is kind of impersonal and messy speaks to the fact that I don't live in this world all that well. I get lost in spiritual matters, or in my own mind, or just ELSEWHERE, and physical day-to-day matters sort of get away from me. So in that way, my space makes a bit of sense for me.

Hello again my friend...two months later and I finally have some breathing space to return to my 'response for every response.' David and I have been busy with assisting a friend move from where we were all raised to buying a house four doors down from us...and that is sooooo kewl!
Also we are working with a web designer and planning a site to take our work into a larger forum. It will...as this discussion indicates also be a reflection of who we are and what we believe.
I appreciated your appraisal of your home in relation to who you are. I think you have a clear understanding of the connection and what the outer represents in relation to you and your inner world.
We are all a work in progress and David and I have always found our homes reflect who we are...and where we at any junction of our soul path. Right now we feel completely grounded and love our home. It is a 2,300 square foot home, rustic and very 'organic' with the wood and brick it has in the great room, foyer and David's office. The yard is an extension of that and we have our sacred objects displayed throughout it.
It took us awhile to find a place and 'know with our Know' that it is where we are meant to be. We are blooming where we are planted and I am sure you will too. In the meantime I respect the fact that you live in this world...but not of it.
Hope to be around more and look forward to chatting again...I value our connection Lecanis..even when we are not in touch as much. Good to know you are out there!
Warm and caring regards,
Raia

Absolutely! From the clutter at my work spaces to my paintings on the walls.
I used to be quite neat. But since retiring I've become downright slovenly! I think it reflects my loss of purposeful direction when I had to quit work.
There is also a variety of Native American items throughout the house, mostly pieces we've purchased on trips to Native lands.
And one wall of the hall is covered with photos of family and friends. It's our Hall of Fame! Lots of cute photos of grandkids predominate.
I'm slowly trying to get rid of things that I don't want or need anymore. They have tended to collect in the basement. I want to "lighten my load" in life and move a lot of the "stuff" out. Some goes in the trash, some into recycling, and some to the church rummage sale. A few things will go to the grown kids.
It is astonishing how much stuff one can collect without even trying!

Hi..
Thanks for dropping by and adding your views to the topic. I am not sure that I am the one to answer whether the things show you for who you are. Only you can answer that question.
In my view our living spaces and dress do tell the world something about how we see ourselves...because we have chosen them. They must represent something inner on the outer...or else we'd have and do something else...right?

Yes, it absolutely does! I mean if I had a dirty disorganized room, and I had visitors who do know me at all, they will think of me as being messy. Also, pictures and art drawing that I put on my wall, reflects who I am. For instance, if I had posters of just famous pop stars, I would be deemed as a person who is just interested in pop stars. However, if I had an artistic drawing of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa or the Last Supper, I might be viewed as a completely sophisticated person. That is how I just feel.

Raia,
Hello my friend. I have missed seeing your words. I happened to be going to bed after saying I was going to do it for the last hour. Apparently I was not meant to go to bed yet. I am actually headed to bed after this post. I think your house does reflect you. I know when I am nuts in my life, well my room looks like it does now. When I am calm it is clean. Go figure. I try to keep a balance, however life as a writer does have its draw backs.

Hi...and how great to be in touch again! Thanks for dropping by and letting me know that I've been missed...thanks for that. I have truly missed being here and chatting with great gal-pals like you.
I am planning to post a "Hi...catch up" discussion and hopefully valued friends like you will drop by and give me an update on what has been happening in their lives. If you cannot do that you can fill me in right now.
How is work going...we got rid of our satellite because we've been too busy to watch it. We get our news from the internet and local papers so I am not as tuned into American politics as I was a few months ago. I admire your tenacity and strong voice...keep up your great work.
I completely understand how easy it is for our surroundings to shift as we do. David and have worked long and hard to get our space in 'divine order' and keep it that way. Thanks for you view that our house reflects who we are. We have a spacious 2,300 square foot multi-level house with a lot of brick and wood. It has an 'organic' feel and is filled with many collectibles that we have gathered in our coming onto 18 years together. I have included a photo of our great room to give you a view of our space.
Your view about balance is the key...but not always easy to do when 'life happens.' Take care and I look forward to chatting more. We're busy setting up a website to expand the focus of our work and I am considering publishing options for my book. This is the first breathing space I've had and I am keying away trying to respond to every response again...from some older posts. After that I will add a discussion to the mix.
Missed you too my valued gal-pal!

Hi again...glad you like the gal-pal term. Yep...feels right to me for gals...who can pal around...even on line. Does seem rather odd to me at times...how connected we can feel to special people...even though we have never met. If anyone had told me that could happen before becoming a member here I could have been a little surprised.
However, the energy exchanges and the way you and I have chatted...with growing openness and trust has happened with a few others here. I feel the power within our words and go a lot by my intuitive sense of things. It is a joy to me to know you feel it too and are interested in fostering our gal-pal bond and being able to keep in touch when we are not here as much.
Sharing our home and yard with you because of your interest is fun. It makes it seem a little more personal to me. David and I have been at stages in our life where things were up and down and our house reflected that. Our home and yard is a work in progress like many are...we are always tweaking things here...painting a wall there...re-doing the flooring over here...but we love this house and plan to be in it for a long time.
So I understand that at this stage where things are hectic for you it can feel challenging to have your place a reflection of your true inner self. All things in time...and all change begins with awareness...as you look around things will come to you that need to be changed. However, I do hope you will be loving and tender with yourself in the process...beating oneself up only diminishes energy flows if you get my drift...and I know you do.
My thoughts are with you...let me know how your Spring cleaning goes as time permits.
Hugs to you...
Raia

It sounds as though we are on the same page on this one. Your place must reflect your love of music. Your approach to keeping your place in order mirrors ours as well. Neither my husband or I like clutter and disorder. Because we work from home as self-employed entrepreneurs we have found we function better and think more clearly when we have a place for everything and everything in its place.

i have permission to paint the rooms in the house but i havent had the time to do it all.

Hello and thanks for your input. You sound like a person after my own heart...I love thrift store shopping and garage sales too! The wonderfully unique items and treasures I have found there are all over our house as well.
When I visit someone's home and see their collectibles and knicknacks I am genuinely interested in them...and love to hear the stories about why they were purchased and what they 'represent. So yes, I am sure your items do reflect who you are and what you like...I know mine sure do!
I have included a photo of my just a few of the MANY owl collectibles I have...and many of them are 'gently used' as well. I subscribe to the saying that another person's junk...is often OUR treasures..right?
Happy collecting...

Hi perspectives, Being pensioners, We really don't have the money to spend on our house, so it really isn't the way we want it. At the same time, I guess it does, to some extent anyway, reflect who we are. It's home and that's what matters to us right now. Blessings.

The decor in my home is pretty modern. I like modern though. Most of what I owned was destroyed though, including many of my mirrors and paintings that used to adorn my walls.
I cannot replace them because I had painted them or my husband had painted them early on in our relationship.
We are slowly re-decorating everything but are finding that we are doing it in a way that is pretty different than what we had.
My husband has recently bought me new canvas but my heart just hasn't been in it lately.

I don't think my house represents who I am. Most of my stuff is still in storage due to limited space. Another reason I feel this way is because this is only a temporary location until I find something bigger. I don't think I have had a place that "feels" like home in about 3 years. Now that I reflect back I wish I had never left my "home" that I had. But one day soon I hope to have another place that I can personalize so that I feel like it reflects who I am.
