Can you get online (internet) at work?

Do you have internet access at work? Can you browse websites freely at work? Currently I am working in a sizable company and we cannot. We are basically banned from everything except the innocent yahoo and hotmail homepages. I kinda expected it before I join as I understand that big company would try everything within their ranges to prevent people from slacking off *laughs*.
P.S. That's why I am appearing very occasionally in mylot as mylot is banned from my work too! But in order to ultilize my time, I decide to write down discussion topics during my lunch time and post them when I get home *smiles*.

Well i have a restricted access to internet at work.. Only 5-7 in the evening during the weekdays and 3-7 during the weekends.. And to make it worse.. they have blocked public mailing sites like rediff, gmail and yahoo..
Orkut had been blocked since a long time.. I don't even remember the last time i logged in wihout using a proxy..
But anyways.. i think i m more smart than the people who put up policies.. I use proxies to access my mails..
Moreover i have been using a proxy which allows me 24 hr access to internet.. So its all illegal...isint it?
My company has tried everything to cut me off from the outside world. But still struggling to find my way..
Luckily this site.. mylot has not been blocked since there are not many users here accessing this site ..neither its so common.

Wow! You're really good at computers! We generally just accept that fact that we can't get online!

We don't even have computers at my work. Well, the professional staff do, but they just got internet the middle of last year. I get on via my smart phone. I don't do it a lot and I don't spend hours on there, but I do check my email and myspace.

Yes, and before, we could do everything from checking personal e-mail, to listening to music, to watching videos on youtube. People would think the people in our company our slacking off, but let me explain the nature of our work schedule. We are online teachers and in one 8-hour shift, we have definite periods of time when we would be working, and times when we would be doing nothing. In my 8-hour shift, the maximum amount of time I work is 320 minutes (5.33 hours.) The remaining 160 minutes is divided into breaks of 10 or 20-minutes spread on my schedule throughout the whole day.
In our free time, we are allowed to do pretty much anything that we want--surf the net, eat, gossip, read magazines, and even sleep. Usually we spent our time surfing.
One day, though, the company decided to ban youtube, friendster, and using personal e-mail. I lamented about it on mylot last year and I got bashed off pretty badly, being accused of a lazy worker who slacks off. We are still allowed though, to peruse any website that would help us in our jobs as teachers.
Mylot is not banned though. It's a site that helps improve my writing skills, and therefore falls under the category of being "helpful in my job."

i work in front of a computer for practically 8 hours in a day since my work's nature is online data analyst, its actually a side job since i applied to company as an administrative officer. :) during slack hours after finishing my work early i can do whatever i want to my computer, and so i tend to open mylot once in a while to read post and respond, but i seldom do that since i already have an internet connection at home. sometimes i write my thoughts too and just post it at home.

That sounds like my previous job! But now I can't really access anything *laughs*, I could only "write" down my thoughts or discussions so that I could post at home!

we have internet connection at the office. its because email is a necessity to our agency. sometimes huge files are emailed in between our agencies and some of our clients reach us through emails.
we can freely use internet as long as we have finished our work. we can browse any sites except for friendster, youtube, yahoo messenger, and a lot of game websites. as for myLot, i still can freely browse it. and even if i don't have my own assigned computer at work, i have my pda which i solely use for myLotting purposes only. and i use the wifi connection at the office to connect to our internet. ^__^

I wish I could do that! But I think I am getting used to not having internet at work! Emails are fine but all the websites are banned from usage!

When I used to work, our office allowed us to use the internet for personal stuff only during lunch hours or after work. They believed that surfing the net was a distraction to our work and there was a probability of more mistakes if we continued doing so during office hours.
Come to think of it, they were right about it being a distraction. Don't you just get tempted replying to personal e-mail messages once you see them sitting in your yahoo inbox or checking out other sites once you go online?

That's really true! Now I am used to not having internet access, I think it's quite cool! At least I know that my fellow colleagues won't be browsing the internet when I am working really hard!

I have open access to net at my workplace as i have to use net for a good number of my daily activities. But i never use it apart from official use as i dont want to loose the faith which the company has put in me by putting no ristrictions on my usage of the net. Moreover i find hardly any free time at work to just gossip around or brouse the net.

In our office, here in makati Philippines, we are banned to browse at youtube.com as it uses a large amount of bandwith. Aside from that, we can access other sites as long as it is a trusted site. Given such a privilege, i don't abuse my official hours anyway, i do mylot things during my vacant hours (per se) lunch.

I kind of wish they could release the "ban" during lunch hour so we could do some personal stuff *smiles* but I know that's not going to happen!

that is very good practice because why should a company pay you for the time you are doing your personal stuff at work that is counter productive. i do welcome that policy at least i have something to look forward to when i get home.

I do. Most people do. Who doesn't? Browse freely? Well, I have to say I am quite fortunate because the place where I am working is not that strict although we are dealing with sensitive data. Yeah, sure some websites are blocked and instant messaging is prohibited but we still have the freedom to surf internet. However I think its everyone responsibility since given the freedom-no sites blocking-to do what is right. You know, work first, surf later.

On of the cons of my job is that i am free to use the internet all the time... mainly because i am the only one in the office... but as i recall... i have never worked for a company that restricted our use of the internet...
In the schools where i worked... we were free to do so since we need to research a lot... it was also the same thing when i was still working abroad... so i guess... i am a very lucky person...
It is so nice that you can still mylot even with your busy schedule... keep it up...

I definitely have to make time for mylot! I think my plan works nicely so far. But I could only respond to different discussions during weekends because I would have more time browse and respond!

That is just so sweet. You could get very skinny that way too, thinking of your myLot friends and forgetting to eat. I have mentioned before the myLot would get a lot of interesting new members if it were marketed as a diet scheme, and you have fueled my fire. Too kewl.

*laughs* I wouldn't forget to have my lunch because I would get so hungry at work! But it's a good way to kill some time and do something useful even when I don't have the access! I don't like the feeling of being totally disconnected to mylot!

Hello wondericequeen,
I have a freedom with the internet access at my work place. I can even spend the whole day chatting or mylotting here but alas, I just don't have time to do so. I always log in at yahoo and skype but I don't even have time to touch the keyboard. I am very busy right now and the only time I have is after midnight when everyone is sleeping at home

You can get Yahoo and Hotmail homepages? Wow, you're lucky. While I worked for Guthy-Renker, we could only access our product line's homepage and our network-based email. There was a glitch with my computer, so I could only access my company email address. I should have sent naughty messages to a cute guy. Anything to pass the time!!!
