My hubby needed some now pants for work so he wouldn't have to wear his good ones and ruin them. He works in a place where his clothes get really dirty. I didn't like the idea of spending like $25 for a pair of work jeans so my best friend told me to go to GoodWill because they have decint clothes for decent prices. Iwas amazed at what I found there. I actually got 3 pairs of Levis with the tags still on them and only paid 30 for all 3 pairs. They had a lot of clothes there that were still tagged with the original tags so I definately will shop there again. Do you shop at second had stores? Why or why not?

The quality of Goodwill stores must vary drastically from town to town. The ones here is St. Louis are pretty dismal and almost never seem to have anything worhtwhile and when they do it seems to me you could find a better deal in the clearance section of any major store. I have long suspected that the Goodwill employees here pick through the donations and the 'good' stuff never makes it to the sales floor.

I like to shop a goodwill and other places it is great for people like me with 2 kids that can't afford to buy new off the rack everytime my kids need something. I shop second hand, yardsales and clearance. I also love being able to get things for the house you never know what you will find in the thrift stores. A friend of mines brother got a fishing lure that he ended up selling for like $600.00 on ebay. Now that was a great trip to the goodwill.

Someone else had commented that they found something of value while shopping there too. I think that's really interesting.

I love, love, love Goodwill!! I was just there a couple weeks ago. I never bought clothes from there before, just knick-knacks and furniture but I found a faux fur coat for $20 and when I got the register I guess they were having some kind of 1/2 off sale so I got it for $5!!! It is freaking awesome! I got a pair of old Navy pants for work too. I don't recall how much they were though. I think like $3.

I've found some great clothes in charity shops and bought work clothes when I needed lots of black trousers for a job I got in them. A lot of the clothes have hardly or never been worn as the person who donated them didn't like them so they are in good condition and have always been washed so I don't see a problem with wearing them. I've also bought some good cookware like pans and Pyrex dishes in charity shops, these kinds of things are so expensive new if you can find them second hand you really are getting a bargain.

I noticed the cookware and some dishes to and they looked like new. I will probably get some of that stuff in the near future and I can just run it through my dishwasher to sanatize it well.

I have not shopped at the Goodwill or a Thrift Store, but I have bought and sold baby items at a consignment shop before. You can get some pretty good deals in some of them. I miss Once Upon A Baby, I would sell my kids baby clothes as they outgrew them and make a pretty good amount of money on them.

I love shopping at Goodwill. You can get some great bargains. Plus, I donate things to them, too. The one I go to is a pretty big one. I went to a new one not long ago and I just can't go back to it. The smell in there was horrible. I couldn't figure out what it was. I think they had treated the clothes with something, but I have no idea what. Anyway, it gave me a headache in just a few minutes. I've never found that in any other Goodwill. I shop at second-hand bookstores, too...if they have hardbacks. I just love bargains! Someone's trash is always someone else's treasure, isn't it?

I wonder what that smell was. I didn't notice anything at the one I went to. Maybe in a few months after that store has been open whatever they used to treat stuff in there won't be so bad.

I have no problem with buying at second hands stores. I love to save money any way I can. Here we have goodwill and the thrift store. These stores start out high on their clothese however, when they don't sell they mark them down. I have been lucky to find dress clothes as well as costumes for holloween in stores like this. I also love to go yard saling in the summer time. These are individual people trying to get rid of clothes that don't fit any more and are just taking up space. You can get all types of things at yard sales for really good prices. I have been lucky to get jeans for me at fifty cents a piece. I am a big woman and for me to go into a store any buy clothes it costs a lot. I have found some great deals at yard sales. However, yard sales only happen in my state in the summer months. I have been able to buy cd's as well as dvd's at yard sales too. I love to save money. The less I have to pay for something I need the more I have to spend on something else. The only advice I have for people who buy clothes second hand or at yard sales is to wash they very good. I am not saying that the stores don't wash them or that the people at the yard sale are dirty. It is just better to be safe than sorry.

Where I live we call it rummage saling instead of yard saling. Every May the town that we live in has a whole weekend where everyone in town has a community wide rummage sale. I love to go from house to house and find a bunch of great deals. I always get lucky and find a few things that I really like for next to nothing.

Yes, I definitely shop at these kinds of stores. I usually don't buy my clothes from Goodwill since I guess I'm just paranoid (unless, of course, the tags were still on the clothes like you mentioned). I also can find decently priced clothes at regular stores since I only buy clothes at discounts or on clearance. The other reason I don't buy clothes there is because I have too many! (LOL) I buy shoes at Goodwill sometimes. It all depends on what I can find there. I don't look down on people who shop here because you can't beat the prices! My fiance and I shop at Goodwill all the time to see if we can find anything we need because we already know we won't beat the price anywhere else. I think it's a great place to shop for odds and ends. I've also donated some of my nice things to Goodwill because I just couldn't use them anymore. There's no use in my keeping something I don't use when someone else can enjoy!

I occasionally buy t-shirts from good-will stores. I buy my halloween costumes there also. I like shopping there for t-shirts for working in the garden or just moping around the house. I bought a fancy dress there once for fifteen dollars that I wore to an event at the university.

I used to shop at Goodwill but they have gotten ridiculous, their prices are higher than walmart! I dont consider Goodwill to be a thrift store any more. My wife likes doing crafts and sent me to get her some plastic canvas so I thought I would stop in at Goodwill and pick some up well Their old yellow and brittle plastic canvas was 34 cents a sheet I spoke with the manager and explained to her that walmart sells theirs in new condition for 23 cents a sheet and she told me that there was no way walmart was that cheap. So I left and went across the street to walmart and bought 50 sheets and returned to Goodwill and donated 25 sheets to the manager and each sheet was marked with a sticker. I said to her here now you can throw away that old yellow and brittle canvas and sell these. I couldnt believe it but she got so pissed that she jerked the plastic canvas out of my hand and walked off never saying a word. Nope I will never shop Goodwill again!

Hi mgmagana, haven't seen you in awhile how are you doing? Now that you mentioned this about your 2 1/2 year old growing so fast I wished I would have thought of going to these stores when my daughter was younger. I'll be going for her a lot though anyway even though she's 9 she still grows pretty fast. Good to hear from you again.

Actually, the Good Will shops in my area are not so hot but some of the Church and Hospital thrifts are terrific. It's possible to get like new, high quality, high cost items for a song. A friend of mine just got three pair of new jeans in her size with $60.00 price tags still on each of them for $5.00 (all three). This is not unusual. I once pulled a brand new Thomas Pink shirt from a free bin with a $135 tag still on it. I've also gotten Hermes & Ermenegildo Zegna neckties for under $5.00. I sold them on eBay for a whole lot more.

I shop at second hand stores alot. The price on just one pair of jeans is INSANE!! 40 bucks usually. I use to work at the goodwill in my city and 3 days out of the week they would get shipments from target. All the things people returned to the store or stuff that was open goodwill would sell. Of course the electronics they didnt test before they put them on the shelves but you could return them within 3 days.

We shop for work clothes, and shirts at Value Village which is our main second hand store line and I will look for cake pans, but not clothes. I take a plus size and cannot find any there, and certainly not many that is in the color that suits me. I have to wait until someone gives to Value Village something with the Addionelle label or anything that comes from a Plus Sized store. I do find a lot of binders there. But for clothes in my size, it is very rare.

Oh heavens yes .... I have found some GREAT deals there. I finally convinced my daughter to shop there and last year she went and found brand new sweaters (tags still attached) and they were selling them for $1 PLUS she got some type of college student discount !! I know a lot of folks that sell on Ebay also shop there. I get a lot of items to paint on ... another person's junk may just be my treasure !

I don't need to shop for much of anything anymore, but I surely did shop Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores when I could. I don't think shopping frugally carries the same stigma that it once did. I know a lot of people that frequent the thrift stores, and most are proud of the bargains they come away with (myself included!).

I agree the stigma isn't the same either. I have lots of friends that go there and happy with the bargains the get too. Now I hope I can get a few bargains on some clothes or something for myself.
