I own a medium sized bulletin board with approximately 1500 members. I'm not interested in charging a membership fee or paying for content. I also would like to avoid the site looking like the front of a NASCAR jumpsuit...
...what has worked for you in making the transition from a small community to a self-sustaining website?

I own a similar numbered forum myself and to be honest I have a lot of problems with it. The worst are the spammers that seem to enjoy spending their time on the automated bots that spam p*rn onto every post. I guess to build a forum faster you need to incentivize your clients so maybe some contests would help them. Referral contests, posting contests, even an add a link to this forum contest to get more inward links to your site.
Best wishes and goodluck!
