Packaging of Consumer Goods and Advertising

Seems to me when I go shopping and come home and have to put everything away the space I have becomes less and less, so my some of my questions are: a) Why don't the manufacturers of food products choose a method of packaging that would be less bulky; b) Why not find a method of packaging that will be more bio degradable; So, if this were to become an accomplishment, the packagin would become easier for the consumer to handle, cheaper in price and ecologically welcomed by the landfill sites, which we are told are filling up at an alarming rate. Manufacturers advertising seems also to be going over the top - why not have one great advertisement, and lower the costs of the product - more than likely they'd sell more, still keep the packaging plants in work, and the consumer would have more dollars to spend thus keeping the Economy working for all of us. I am so fed up with the packaging that when I do have to buy a product again, I unpackage it in the store and leave them my garbage; The first few times I did that, people around me gave me the LOOK - like, that woman is nuttier than a fruit cake, but, guess what - NOW I don't get the look that often and I witness other consumers doing the same thing! HOORAY! People are getting the message out. I know the store manager hates to see me come into the store, but - eventually Head Office will hear all about this and it might, I say might filter its way to the top brass. IF the practice spreads, then somewhere where the$ hurt a profit margin, someone away up there will have to take some notice and possibly do somethng about it. I mean - do you eat the cereal box, what about those frozen entrees', the styrofoam egg cartons (they are not bio-degradable!), plastic jars of jams, coffee, margerines, on and on and on it goes, if many of the packaging were thought out in the manufacturing sectors, we the consumers might get a cost break, the landfill sites would also get a break, and somewhere along the line we would all begin to win. MY LAST question is: WHAT do you the consumer think about trying out such a method. When you go shopping take along your shopping bags, make sure you take your empty food containers with you inside those bags, take the cereal out of the box and insert the plastic wrapped cereal into your food container and leave the cardboard box behind in the stores garbage. Dump your sugar into its container, put the spaghetti into its container, coffee, tea, oats, (flour and the powdery stuffs for the most part come in paper bags) paper isn't too bad it breaks down at the landfill site. Its the packaging with the plastic coatings that are a hindrance. Boxes are bulky and a nuisance, made of paper, yes, but take up so much space, I would rather leave that behind at the store, let them have the problems of carting it all away. Why should I pay to rid my household of the manufacturers garbage that I cannot eat or use? Now I realize taking your own containers with you might take you a tad longer, but somewhere along the way this form of recycling can only help not hinder. Just a few questions and a few suggestions, because this line of thought is endless and can be implemented in so many areas of our lives and help the world at the same time. I do so hope this will provoke a great discussion and debate, and that many of you will go along and carry on the same practices in your neighbourhood shops. Dragon Fly 77
