I try to cook my kids a hot breakfast at least 2 days during the week and always make a good hearty breakfast on SUndays. I was telling my friend this and she told me she cooks a hot breakfast for her kids every single morning! I just do not have enough time to do it everyday. There is nothing wrong with cereal or frozen waffles a few mornings a week!

unless you count toast or bagels as a hot breakfast mine usually get it 3 days a week - these days will be either an egg meal variety, pancakes, or oatmeal... sometimes corned beef hash with fried eggs over top.
I agree there is nothing wrong with a bowl of cold cereal, a piece of fruit or some juice and the kids do like these things - variety is a nice thing.

Does hot breakfast automaticly mean healthy or that it is the best type of breakfast? Not necessarily as there are many cold foods that make for a completely healthy breakfast as well. As I have heard it said, 'variety is the spice of life'.

I don't know if you would consider this a complete breakfast, but during the week in these winter months my daughter like to eat flavored Quaker oatmeal. So most of the school week that is what she has along with juice and milk. On the weekends I like to make scrambld eggs with cheese and toast with applebutter. Some weekends she likes french toast and sausage.~D

well both hubby and i work and have to get the kids up for school, but we run water through our coffee maker (plain water, not coffee) and we buy the girls hot cereal (instant) so they can have a hot breakfast every day...it really takes no time but they really like it and on the weekends (sat) we have a large breakie of pancakes, muffins or whatever our cook (my hubby) feels like making!
sundays are busy because we leave for church by shortly after 9 so its almost like another week day for us.

I feel guilty. With my tight schedule I am lucky if I get to cook my kids a hot breakfast once a week!!! Most of the time they eat either cold cereal or instant oatmeal, especially during the winter.

I think that a variety is best, and it doesn't have to be a hot meal to be good. So I mix it up between cereal, pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, french toast, and sometimes ham and eggs. And always a fruit and milk. My son gets bored if I serve the same thing too often anyway, so this way works best for us.

hi Sillychick, I also headache to think of anything I can serve for my son. sometimes I think I can give him some fruits but I'm not sure will he be hungry shortly since fruits have more water than other meals. chinese never serve fruits as meal, but many of my workmates just have some fruits as lunch. I think it should be some difference of cultrue. and since my son is still young, he should be fine if I do it from now.

My son usually just has cereal, toast and fruit for breakfast. Sometimes I make him scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, oatmeal, or something like that, but not very often. My son sleeps late, too, though. He only gets up about 2 hours before we have lunch, so his breakfast is more like a snack.

I think that getting a healthy breakfast every day is a something that you should be proud of regardless of whether it is a hot/cold breakfast. I try to mix things up at my house. For instance, we have a hot breakfast 4 times a week. That does not mean I am cooking a full breakfast 4 times a week. Here is a basick week at my house:
Sunday: homemade waffles with yogurt and juice
Monday: fiber one honey cluster cereal and yogurt
Tuesday: Oatmeal with fresh fruit and milk
Wednesday: rice krispies, yogurt, fruit and milk
Thursday: eggs, toast, bacon and juice
Friday: cheerios, fresh fruit, milk
Saturday: Daddy & Son make breakfast (usually eggs and toast)
The way I see it, as long as you are making sure that breakfast is healthy and filling, it does not really matter if it is a hot meal versus cold cereal. Kids need variety or they get bored.

my son is still a baby (1 yr and 3 months). he's been starting to be really busy and is usually up at dawn. even living away from him, i try to visit him as often as i can to know about his habits and everything he does. on mornings, he doesnt really ask for hot food, he interested only in biscuits or a local food here called "taho" which is made from tofu, caramel and "sago". the vendor usually goes around as early as 6 am to sell this stuff and my baby would have a warm cup of this sweet stuff.

haha...wow, I think your friend is doing a wonderful thing and more power to her, but I can't do it.
Everyone is different though. My kids bascially eat one of three things during the school week and that would be frozen waffles, toast, or oatmeal. I guess the oatmeal counts as something good.
They really don't like to eat alot in the mornings anyways and if it was up to them they would not eat anything in the morning at all....but I know how important it is so I do my best to get them to eat something.
Thanks for the discussion!!

My 13 month old daughter gets a hot breakfast a few times a week, but my son rarely does except on weekends. He usually just wants a piece of toast or some cereal or a yogurt. He is not really big on eating first thing in the morning just like me. My daughter however is a bottomless pit from sun up to sun down. She eats eggs and toast for breakfast a few times a week. Sometimes I will make her pancakes. At least one weekend morning I try to make a big breakfast that consists of eggs, bacon or sausage, toast and pancakes.

I always fixed my kids breakfast when they were growing up. I was lucky enough to be a stay at home mom. Sometimes we'd have leftovers for breakfast. They loved it when we had lasagna because they knew they could have it for breakfast! Pancakes, too, I liked to make a big batch and freeze them then just put them in the toaster. I'd use applesauce instead of syrup, more nutrition. Breakfast tacos were also a favorite, just spread some refried beans over a tortilla, sprinkle on some cheese and maybe add a little pre-cooked taco meat. Or pre-cooked scrambled eggs in burritos, they loved those!
There's nothing wrong with cereal for breakfast, as you said. The important thing is sitting down with them and sending them off having spent a little time with you.

Both of us are working and we are quite consern about having breakfast with our kids every beautiful morning.
We cook or buy something hot , but not froozen for our kids before they go to school.
This is important especially my youngest son don't really like frozen foood.
Haha, in another way to say, no choice.

before i used to do that everyday for breakfast is the most important meal of the day. but now that they are on their teens already they have different choices on what to eat. sometimes they feel like eating apples in the morning. sometimes they just like to drink a glass of milk. i think they are also old enough to prepare their breakfast for they know now how to cook. but sometimes i still prepare them breakfast specially during weekends. were we can all sit down and talk without rushing.

Life is always dilemma. I am Chinese and we provide hot meal everyday for my son. However, he must has cold meal when he eat at Kinder or Preshcool next year. We are trying our best to let hime used to the cold meal.
I don't think anything wrong with cereal but I never let my son to eat frozen food, even if it's just 5C and at hot summer.
