How do you get traffic and referrals?

Most of the online money-makers that I've seen involve getting a downline and/or getting traffic to your website. What techniques have worked for you? Do you get referrals? Do you run a website? How do you get the traffic flowing.
I'm really interested in traffic=building. I've got a website with google ads, and I've noticed a direct correlation between traffic and clicks. When my traffic hovered around 10-15 visits per day, I got maybe a few cents. When traffic went up to close to 100 visits per day (like now!!), I'm earning a dollar or two per day.
So does anyone have any hints?

There are a lot of programs that need referrals to earn more. I think that is the "in" thing today and even in the future. If you can afford just like the one who posted earlier, pay for it. Get busy promoting your site. Congratulations for 100 visits per day!

I have spent countless hours trying to get referrals by the means companies tell you to but really if you don't have something catchy I think there is way to much of this to really get a good referral base. Good luck but I haven't had any luck yet.
