I can't understand why some people do some of the stupidest things. For instance, today I was watching Case Files. There was a cult leader that had his cult to kill an entire family, including kids. He told them that God told him to do this in order to cleanse the world of sin. Hello? Last time I read my bible it said "Thou shall not kill." This should have been a clue to his followers. Why would God tell anyone to purposely kill another human being? That is the dumbest excuse I ever heard. God himself could cleanse the world of sin if he wanted to. Is this the dumbest thing? Why do people get in these type of cults?

It is definately silly and it has got alot to with people wanting to fit in and yearning to be part of "something bigger". They seem to feel that their leader has been anointed by God or Jesus, and that the path to heaven is reliant on their obedience. The followers have a desire to see "our maker" as being almost tangible. The truth is that God is a matter of faith, not tangibility.
They seem to delude themselves into believing that they are soldiers for god.
If you were in the armed forces and command came through your battalion leader that you were going off to kill people for "a greater good", you would do it because that is your role.
These followers seem to see it as their role.
Personally, I believe that there will always be people using religion as a weapon to kill. Simply, a religious person believes he is more enlightened, pure, correct and just.

Things like this happen because some people are too stupid to think for themselves. They are being brainwashed into doing things that they wouldent normally do. The problem is that they are being told that "God" wants them to do it there for that makes it right. People need to learn to think for them selves and then everything would be fine.
