Why a Pitbull

Why do you own a Pitbull?
I adopted Kohei, because he, his momma and litter mates were going to be put down. I think that they are gorgeous animals and in the right owners hands, they can be the most loyal dog on the planet. Given to the macho's that only want to keep them for a status symbol or to fight, gives the breed a bad rap, just like Dobies and Sheperds before them.
Do you think if instead of BSL, they did a mandatory licensing for owners, you would pass? What should such a test comprise of?

In the UK the law says: "Owning an unregistered pit bull terrier type dog is unlawful and if you have such a dog you are committing a criminal offence. If you think you have an unregistered pit bull type dog, it cannot be voluntarily registered (ie. at present there is no application you can make to register your dog)". I for one am very grateful. I have no doubt that you are a considerate sensible and responsible owner, but these dogs were bred for fighting, from dogs that are already fighting breeds and that is their instinct. No matter how careful you are, you can never control what is going on in the dog's mind. If it is frightened it will respond in what it thinks is an appropriate way. I have known a labrador kill another dog, and there must be millions of those in circulation. I sincerely hope that everything goes well with your dog. I love dogs, but this breed terrifies me.

Yes this breed was established for fighting, I don't deny that. One thing tho, is that when this breed was also established to be non human aggressive. If it bit a handler, it was put down.
And yes, while it is their instinct, a properly trained and sound dog should not attack a human. If a handler is in control of the animal, and knows the animal, it can usually stave off an animal attack. While i cannot control what is going on in his mind, I can learn to read his body language to get an idea, and redirect if possible. It is my responsible to teach it not to attack out of fear as an appropriate way, or to attack another dog or human period.
This is why I asked about the owner having to go to through licensing themselves and not just the dog. Considering that American Pit Bulls are a very dominant breed, they need an owner that understand this, and can work with dominance, and not just chain the dog out in the backyard and take it out for a fashion show.
Is there also a ban on Akita's in the UK? The dogs were breed for the same purpose as Pit Bulls, and actually are known to have worse temperament than Pits, but here in the US, they don't make the news as much as Pits.

My first pitbull was a gift my brother bought for his girlfriend. After her not taking care of it my brother took the puppy back. she is the sweetest best dog in the world. I recently moved to Florida from New Jersey and my pitbull stayed with the family of course. I was lonely and needed a dog in the house. my boyfriend new i loved pitbulls so he went out and got me a little red nosed girl who is now almost 8months old named Cora.
I think the people who are selling thier puppies should do better research before selling them to any one. And i think some kkind of licensing or somehting should be required. theres nothing i hate more then turning on animal planet and seeing fighting dogs be rescued, then have to be put to sleep. i find myself crying most of the time. if there was a test, i would definately pass. my pup gets treated better and has more toys then a little kid. she has her own bed and blanket and lives a better life then most humans lol.....
