What do you have an irrational fear of?

I was doing some shopping today when a lady asked me to donate to her charity, In return she wanted to give me a sticker to put on my coat. I gave her some money but declined the sticker and moved hurriedly away. I am frightened of stickers. Not so that I cannot stand to see them, just hate having them on me. This is quite irrational, I get through life, but I really don't understand why I should be so averse to these silly little pieces of paper. Do you have any irrational fears?

An ex of mine always used to say 'hope you sleep well' it was like he cursed me as always had a restless night, 'hope you have a good journey' and I would be stuck on A303 for hours grrrr I used to say to him don't say anything and I did become irrational over it but the times he didn't say anything journey or sleep was fine. He tried not to but it was like everything he said happened in the opposite. I wonder why I'm not with him anymore LOL. Have no real fears otherwise that I'm aware of, perhaps slugs and creepy crawlies. Ellie :D

I think that it is compulsory to be stuck on the A303. There's some law or other that requires it LOL. I shall be on it later today. I shall be the one with the sign saying "Ellie, see what I mean" as we crawl along at 2 yards an hour. My Grandmother in Law always used to say : "See you in the morning. God willing", and one day he didn't! My wife is not fond of creepy crawlies either, they don't bother me too much although one night in Nepal I needed the Loo in a hurry (it can have that effect on Western stomachs). I switched on the light, sat down and there, right above me was the largest hornet I have ever see. One Nepalese hornet is so much more effective than any prescription laxative!

LOL I just had to put my tuppence worth in here, I used to have a boss who was terrified of bourbon biscuits and would walk out of meetings if they were ever brought in on a plate and sometimes his naughty secretary would do it on purpose - he said it was due to him having stuffed his face with 3 packets when he was about 12 years old and feeling sick for a week haha! Strange huh?

You most certainly are not a nutter. Confession is good for the soul. If it is stickers for me, it can be Bourbons for you. Biscuits can be tricky things, only last night I dunked one and half of it escaped into my mug. Very unpleasant. I had to drink gin instead.

I have a phobia about spiders and just about every other insect you can think of but that's quite common so I won't go on about that (although people do think I'm loopy when I freak out when I see a fly buzzing around me)! I have an irrational fear of steps in underground stations. I don't know when I started having this stupid fear but I've had a car for 15 years and used the underground to get to work before that so it must have developed over time after that. I only use the underground a couple of times a year and when going down the steps I have to hold onto the side barrier all the way down and it takes me literally 3 or 4 minutes to get down these steps and is very annoying for anyone that I'm with. I can't explain it, I'm not particularly scared of heights. I just have this crazy fear that I'm going to lose my balance and fall. I walk down 4 flights of stairs every at work several times a day without batting an eyelid but put me near concrete steps in a train/tube station and I freak out! Ever heard anything so silly before? LOL
@p1kef1sh (45681)
5 Mar 08
No I don't think so. The Underground is a pretty all round scary place. Firstly, it underground (well I know that's not true all the way round). It attracts loonies. Only time I have ever been hugged by a wino (that I didn't know, or want to) - Balham tube station 11 o'clock at night. Then those stairs, steep and not designed for ladies in high heels, and some of them move too. Definitely on the list of things that you can be freaked by.

I have a phobia of grills on the ground. I don't like stepping, walking, or driving over them.

It seems I fell on one as a tot when the house we lived in while building our first house in Texas had a floor heating grill. It seems I "waffled" my hand and while I have neither the memory of doing it, nor the scars from it, I still have the fear of it.

Not sure about the driving bit, but look what stepping on a grill did for Marilyn Monroe. But I know what you mean. It might just cave in and take you somewhere very unpleasant.

Everyone thinks I have a fear of flying. That isn't it at all. I have a fear of FALLING! Everyone always tries to rationalize it by saying I am safer in a plane then I am in car. Sorry but I have seen dozens upon dozens of people recover from car accidents. I don't know a single one who has fallen 15,000 feet and lived to tell about it. Until the day I evolve to where I can sprout wings on a whim, I will forever have a fear of falling.

That just tickles me somehow, that you're afraid of stickers. Makes me grin. Sorry, but true. For me, there are several things that I have an irrational fear of, if you can call fear irrational in the first place. Fear is fear, whether the source is real or imagined. I don't particularly like being wished sweet dreams, as I have a life-long tendency toward nightmares, and I don't want to be jinxed. Basements are another thing I don't like, and I don't know why, either. They do tend to be rife with things like water-bugs and spiders, but I don't think that's really it. Sub-basements are something I couldn't ever even go near! That idea is revolting, repulsive and terrifying for me. Cockroaches and maggots are another thing - I hate even typing the words, frankly and I don't want to look back and see them, either, here on the page. I can't watch anything on tv or in the movies that show them, can't hear about them, can't deal with them in any fashion at all. Nope, no way! And I don't like to fly either. I just know the plane is going to fall out of the sky with me on it. Churches are another thing I don't like and I know that sounds weird, but it's true. I don't call myself a christian or anyting else and churches sort of creep me out. Don't get me wrong, I have huge faith, but I don't claim any religion and I don't like churches. Heights are a bit iffy for me. I try to enjoy them, but my stomach tends to flip-flop. I want to like heights though, so I do try to make myself experience them. I sort of like the rush they give me. I think it's good to face our fears though and I find that sometimes just walking out the front door is a real feat. But walk out I do. Once I'm out, I'm fine, but sometimes it can be hard to turn that knob. Silly, huh? Maybe, but real enough. Let's see, what else? No, I think I have it covered - that's enough, isn't it? All those fears? Oh, yes, I also have a fear of auditioning, but I've done it and will do it again. I have a desire to act, and the only way to do that is to audition. It's really scary and puts you out there naked and alone, but it's so exciting too, and if you can get your throat to open up and words to come out, you're on your way. Good topic, p1kef1sh, one that everyone can relate to in many ways.

Another one that wants to put me right on my use of the word irrational! I am in agreement that I have an entirely rational fear of stickers. I make no apologies for the following sexist comment: WOMEN!@! To business: I think that basements are all to do with our fear of being enclosed - like being buried alive. As for the rest. Lie down, read a good story, and all will be well. I think that a cure in that form may well come your way tomorrow.

I'm not sure if its irrational or not, but grasshoppers and crickets. Do you remember the Adbominable Dr Phibes with Vincent Price? If you want to give me a stroke, put one of those in my bed before I get in it. It will definitely do the trick.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Probably something to do with all that jumping. In Summer we get a small colony of grasshoppers come and sit in the grass by our front door. Every year they are there, and I have no idea where they come from. Fear not, I shall not be putting jumping creatures anywhere near your bed. If I got that close I could think of something much pleasanter. There I go again.

I'm not sure there's any such thing as an irrational fear. If you have that fear, then it is VERY real, and therefore VERY rational, even if only to you. I've already lived through every parent's worst fear, but I still have one that lingers. I am afraid when walking down stairs. I am not afraid of the stairs themselves, after all, that would be irrational ;). But I AM afraid of falling down the stairs. I have these horrible visions of falling and literally breaking my neck, and either dying or being unable to get any help (I guess if I did die, I would still be unable to call for help though, right? :P ).
@p1kef1sh (45681)
5 Mar 08
...and on that cheerful note we'll move right along. That's a good point about fear being rational. I shall have to think about it. I suspect that quite a few people have a thing about stairs. A couple of years ago I had bifocal specs and the optometrist said that I should be careful to look straight ahead when going down the stairs or steps otherwise I might not focus correctly. Have you ever tried looking straight ahead as you go down stairs? Trust me, it's a recipe for disaster. Now dying doesn't bother me particularly (though I would prefer that it was not today) but the manner in which it occurs is a great worry. I think that what I am saying in my usual verbose manner is - I can well understand your fear. Of course you could call for help if you did fall and die. Just drop a post on here and we'll be straight round.

I have a fear of the blood pressure macine at the doctor's office. Just the very thought of it makes me nervous. I will start to freak out driving to the doctors because of it. Of course, that makes my blood pressure nice and high by the time I get there. I agree that it doesn't much matter if you feel your fear is irrational. Fear, rational or not, all creates the same response from your body. For example, my fear of blood pressure machines stems from a problem I had during child birth when my BP got so high I actually had siezures. I also have a fear of the concrete wall on the freeway, for no apparent reason. Both fears are equally scary to my mind and body. Okay, maybe its me, but what on earth are bourbon biscuits?
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I can understand that. It's a bit like dentist's drills. Bourbons are a chocolate brown, chocolate cream filled rectangular biscuit. Presumably, they were a favourite of the Bourbons, who I think were French.

I cannot stand superstores. You know, WalMart, SuperTarget, SuperKmart, the places that are the regular store mushed with a grocery store. I hate them. I'll go in there for the sundries if nowhere else has what I'm looking for, but I hate to do any shopping there, and especially my grocery shopping. Our local WalMart is a superstore, but our local Target isn't. I would rather pay more and shop at two separate places than go into one of these monstrosities. And I do pay more and shop at two separate places. It takes longer, it costs more (if you figure in gas and the pennies more per item here and there), but I say it's all worth it for me not to go to WalMart. It just gives me the heebie-jeebies to go in there, and I get so distracted by everything that I wind up spending my grocery money on things I don't need or want.

Evidently so! It seems like a very good treatment for agoraphobic people, and I have known a few that I would tell to do the same! Shame I'm no psychiatrist, apparently I could make a ton of $$$ just telling people to go shopping, lol! Sorry, couldn't let it pass... But I do know that it's a real problem for some. ^_^

Of course the supermarkets want us to spend more, that's why they place so many tempting things in our way. One of my gripes is candy by the checkout just at child height. Although supermarkets are not a phobia of mine. When I was ill last year part of my therapy was to spend an hour a day in a supermarket so that I could rebuild my confidence with being out with people again. Funnily enough I saw my psychologist just yesterday in the checkout queue. The treatment clearly worked.

I don't like for any part of my body to be wet unless I have intentionally done something to make that part wet. For example, I can't stand it if I am getting ready and, after I washed my hands, I dripped some water on the counter and then, while I am working at the counter putting my makeup on, I rest my hand on that wet spot on my counter and now that part of my hand is wet. Ick! I don't know why that bothers me. Or, if my hubby washes his hands but, they aren't totally dry, and then he caresses my arm or something, it isn't his hand on me that bothers me, it is the wet he just left behind. I know his hands are clean and it seriously isn't about dirt or anything. It is just the fact that a part of my body is now wet when I had nothing to do with making it that way. So weird, huh?

I am intrigued by your phobia. I can remember seeing movies as a child where clowns were the bad guys and I can understand how all those exaggerated features could be scary. Shadows of trees on walls is a new one. Thank you.
