Doctor's appointments - can you get them?

I was working on a response to a discussion of one of my friends and a subject came up that made me realize I had a topic of discussion.
When I want to see the doctor I call them up and they generally get me in the next day, or at worse, the day after. Often they get me in the same day.
I never really thought anything about it. I’d call up and they got me in. I usually didn’t tell them who I was until after they offered the appointment so it wasn’t as if I am anyone famous or anything.
This was in the early 1980's, and I worked with a nice bunch of people. One day one of the ladies was crying at her desk. She was in acute pain from a problem on the bottom of her foot that hurt just doing nothing and she could barely walk on it. I was walking by and saw her crying and asked what was wrong. The doctor’s office - the SAME doctor’s office that I went to since this was the EARLY days of HMO’s and if it couldn’t be any more convenient, it was located right next door - had given her an appointment 3 weeks away. Now, she is in terrible pain and she just couldn’t take it any more, she NEEDED to see a doctor that day, or the next.
I told her that I always got appointments faster than that except for my annual physical. I offered to call them for her and see if they could get “Me” in faster. She was, at first, reluctant, but I said - what can it hurt if I can get you in sooner? She came over to my desk and I called. Since if they gave me an appointment I’d need to give them her information. I called and they gave me an appointment later that day. My co-worker now cried with relief. She kept the other appointment for an allergy check.
That was annoying, but I was very glad to help this lady.
Almost a year later, another co-worker was VERY sick, she probably shouldn’t have been at work, but her personal life was in such crisis that staying at home wasn’t a good option either. I was walking past her desk when she hung up the phone. I could tell she was very upset - besides the personal stuff - and asked if there was a problem.
She told me that she had gotten an appointment with the doctor’s office - again, the same one - and as sick as she OBVIOUSLY sounded, they gave her one 2 weeks away.
I told her that she needed to be on antibiotics, yesterday, and offered to call them to see if they would give me an appointment sooner.
Well, you can guess that they did, again, the same day.
I called up the office manager and complained about their appointment system. I don’t know if its because I can put an urgency into my voice, or I get the better appointment setter or what, but I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like for those other people that didn’t have me to make their appointments for them!
So, do you have a problem getting an appointment when you need to see a doctor but not go to the emergency room? Do they put you off for days or weeks when you really should be there now? Or are you like me and can have something minor, that could wait until next week and they want you to jump in your car and get there in 20 minutes?

I guess I'm luckyer to. I can get in the Dr. the same day I call. It just depends realy what my situation is. If its realy bad, then they tell me to come right in. But if its not to bad the its eather later that day or the next.

If I am really sick I just go to urgent care and wait the half hour or so. For my yearly, if I go to my regular Dr there is at least a 2 week wait. I have been going to a GP that works out of the hospital, she is open on Saturdays but only takes appointments the day before. I don't mind though, I don't have to miss work. My sons Dr is really good about same day or even as soon as you can get there appointments. He goes to the same pediatrician I went to and that Dr has always run his office that way.

Here in India we don't have to make appointment to most of the doctors but for some speciality we need to take appointment. But for normal time we don't have to.

We have some "minor emergency" centers, but most insurances don't cover them at the same rate unless they are your GP, some don't have the same arrangement and you have to pay more.
We sometimes call them "Doc in a Box" because of the fast food joint "Jack in the Box." Drive thru medicine.

Awww you're one terrific friend!! There should be more of you to go around!! No I don't have a problem getting in to see my doctor when I need to but I hate him because he's an arrogant behind! He's good at what he does but he's got a mouth on him and acts like a know it all. I want to change doctors and will when I find a better one.

I'm sorry you have a jerk for a doctor. I like my doctor and just brush off the snippy emergency care nurse. I went in to screen him for a friend and myself and the friend didn't like the nurse and quit going. Doesn't matter now, she had "house call doctors" coming to her.

My husbands doctors is terrible for length of time it takes to get an appointment I think normally when he makes an appointment he has a 3 - 5 day wait. My doctors are fantastic for getting me in the same day I phone, I usually phone mine around 8.30am and they get me in for 10.00ish. There is only one doctor who works there who is a pain and is usually behind by about an hour or so which is a nightmare, especially when my little girl was poorly a few months ago. And another time she was poorly I took her in and they wouldnt see me, they made me come back a few hours later, which I was really cross about because normally they see a sick child immediately, but apart from that I have no mither at all.

It is usually me that makes his appointments for him and I get really cross with them and tell him how ridiculous it is that he cannot get seen, that sometimes gets him in a day earlier. Tried to get him in my docs but they are not taking any new ones on at the min but hes on the list.

In case of emergency, i have medical faciltiy sponsered by company in couple of big hospitals who do not charge too much, i go there. that ways life is hassle free as of now,

I know some doctors offices are like that. And I think thats terrible. I have a great doctor and the staff is great. I cant get an appointment the same day. Im so glad your offered to help your co worker. I think the problem is some of these doctors overbook the patients and dont have the time. It took me my whole life to find the right family doctor.

OK this is a BIG peeve of mine.
There are doctors that will charge you if you are late or don't show for an appointment and I can remember when I was a child waiting up to THREE HOURS for a scheduled visit to the doctor.
I ask the attendant when I check in... will the wait be more than 30 minutes. If she says yes I tell her I will bill the doctor at my rate and rescedule if he cannot see me sooner (using his own rules not mine). My going rate as a web developer is ($75/hour) so it can hurt the pocket of the doctor and it almost always gets me in on time, even if they have to jump ahead of other saps. I have an appointment and I expect them to keep it as I am expected to do the same.
Now there are exceptions... gynacologysts (spelling?)... a doctor has to deliver a baby or someone is having problems I can understand waiting in there with all the preggies with my wife because of an emergency... but if the doctor is just running behind then I should get a call... I should know what is going on... I would rather be rescheduled then to spend a whole day in the doctor's office.
Some offices are even offering wireless internet now (very smart Mr. Doctor) so I am always taking my laptop with me as well.
If you doctor doesn't offer this ask for it... if enough ask for it... it's not a hard thing to do... they already have it they just need to make it available to the public.
Thanks and great question

I always have a problem getting an appointment for things, especially for car repairs. I set the appointment, take the vehicle in and it sits there for days without even being looked at. why make an appointment.
Now on to your doctor appointment. Around here, they do not get you right in either unless you know the people ro they know you or something like that. I think it is a buddy system or something. Everyone in my area knows each other or are related and we are not from here so it is all hard on us.
I think they put me off just by hearing the sound of my voice also. they are very rude and very uncaring people.
I wish someone was ready to help me when I am sick like that. I usually have to wait my turn to get in.

I've been going to the same clinic for years and always get an appointment with my doctor the same day. I consider myself very lucky.

Usually when I need to get in they ask, well can you come up within the next half hour? Ill say yea ill be right up. But its almost a small hospital in a small town so its not like they are over loaded with anything. If someone said I had to wait a few weeks to get into a doctor Id either go someplace else or go to the ER. I wouldnt wait esp If I knew how sick I was and needed medications.

usually in our small town, you can get appointments the same day. but if you want something more specialised, you can be ready for a 6 to 8 month wait.

Yes and no. Yes I have had to wait nearly a month for an appointment. But I only want to see my doctor. Not his partner, or a resident. So I am sure that contributes to the longer wait. And no for my daughter. If she has a difficulty they get her in the same day.
