How Far Do You Like To Walk?

It is very mild here in the UK, and today the sun was shining in and although there was a chill in the air it was dry. I caught a bus to wander around the shops and sat by the big pond with fountains and lots of ducks, canadian geese and other marine birds and it was very relaxing, people were feeding the ducks, things you take for granted. I sat and read my book until it got too cold and I decided to head back Trouble is it was 3pm and all the schoolchildren would be getting on the bus and creating mischief, mayhem and noise so I decided to walk home, trouble is, it's a 6 mile walk! Not only did I save 90p by walking big deal I know but I would get some exercise too and more fresh air. Well now I am home, my legs and thighs ache but I really enjoyed the walk, crazy I know but I just love walking and now I have got comfortable shoes my feet are blister free So how far do you like to walk, what's the longest you have walked for? I started walking at 3pm and I got home at 4.30. So 1 and a half hours walking

Your legs and feet will only ache for a while. Think about the benefits of walking six miles, and sitting in the fresh air by the pond. What a lovely day you've had. Before having trouble with my knee, I used to walk seven miles every single day, and loved it. Yes, the first time, it ached a lot, but subsequent walks became much easier. Sometimes, I'd stop to pick blackberries, and sometimes, I'd lean over a gate and take in the view. Other times, I'd cut across the fields to the mill ponds and woods and sit a while, taking in the country life and Nature, as you did. When I lived in Brighton, I walked the seventeen miles across the hills, to Burgess Hill.. only the once though, and another time, for charity, I walked from the Jack & Jill Windmills, on the track atop the South Downs to Lewes, and back, after a pint. That was twenty miles. I just love walking, but unfortunately, I can't walk so far now. Brightest Blessings.

Well, I never! You know my territory! I saw from your profile that you hail from London, and I'm acutely aware of the number of Londoners who travel to Brighton for weekends and days out, but that you know Hassocks and Preston Park... hmmmmmm... train journey, perhaps? I'm going to tell you my life inhabitation story now! ha ha ha. You asked for this! My Dad was from Burgess Hill and my Mum Scaynes Hill which is east of Haywards Heath. I was brought up in Burgess Hill, and when I married, I lived a few years in Fairwarp, which is in the Ashdown Forest, near Nutley. Then, I spent three years in Sennelager, Germany, in married quarters, after which I came home and spent a couple of years near Stonehenge, at Bulford. Next, back to Burgess Hill for a short while before taking work as a Housemother in a Children's Home in Brighton, followed by a flat near Hollingbury Golf Course, on the Downs, in Brighton. I spent eighteen and a half years in Brighton, before moving back to Bolney, which is just off the A23 London-Brighton road. I daresay you know of it. You'll also know that all the places you've mentioned are close to where I live, and I spend loads of time walking from Devil's D*ke to Truleigh Hill, and from the Downs over Sompting to Chanctonbury Ring. The whole of the Weald, between the North and South Downs, and into parts of Kent and Hampshire, used to be a Forest, St. Leonard's Forest, and is steeped in Saxon and Iron Age History. I've been here a while now, and love it here, as long as it's kept as it is. I live 50 yards from the Eight Bells Pub, and the Post Office is just across the road. There is a bus stop right out front, but the service isn't great, as you would imagine. I love living in the heart of the countryside though. There are so many lovely places to walk... woods, millponds, fields, historic places... a dragon is even reputed to have been slain in the Forest, not far from here, in Saxon times! :) I know Brighton like the back of my hand, my friend, and I think it's changing for the better now it has city status. Let's hope so, anyway. My younger son still lives there now, with his family. There endeth the lesson... now what were we talking about??? Ah yes, walks... well I like to take them often... all over the country really. I love Yorkshire, The West Country and home. They all hold great features and peace of mind. :)

I have a relative who lives in Hove and we used to travel down by train from East Croydon but we would get a fast train to Brighton then get the 5A or 5B towards Hangleton, my friend used to live at Patchdean, the other end, near Asda, so it's a small world indeed, most of my relatives actually come from Tunbridge Wells.

I now the places well, and the bus numbers. lol. I used to catch the 5 buses home from work when I worked in Co-op Admin, in Portland Road, then change to a 58, back to Hollingdean. I still have a friend in Hangleton, too. How cute! Tunbridge Wells is a lovely place. I used to go over there shopping when I lived in Fairwarp, because I didn't like the shops in Uckfield. So you see, the world is smaller than we think, my friend.

I walk every day (unless it's raining) and like to do around 6 km's at least. I have made walking a habit and it's part of my day. I have reduced my petrol consumption by 60% in the last 2 years and have saved a heap of money, as well as helped the environment. I have always loved walking but as I have suffered depression in the past I increased the distance and speed to combat it. It works.

I find walking helps my depression and Winter blues a great deal. I have also stopped using my car as much as I used to, hence the walking and I'm healthier for it too!

And I pick different routes so I get to see peoples gardens and new homes. I'm lucky too that I live close to a river which has a walkway close to it, so I get a bit of nature/nurture during the week.

Great stuff wolfie, hubby and I walk the pooches every day in the park which usually takes about an hour and a quarter..It is a beautiful park by a river. This is their time, they socialize we chatt, must confess we sometimes avoid the other pet owners so we can simply walk, look, listen to nature. The longest distance I have walked was with my eldest son several years ago, through a National Park. Our first encounter along the track was a huge male Kangaroo who defiantly looked at us,we sort of side tracked..lol.That day saw us thirteen kilometers away from our starting point,I knew there was no way I would make it back alive,as luck would have it,my trusty mobile saved the day with a call to hubby.

Hello wolfie, I normally walk if the distance is not too long. I would probably walk to save the cents if I won't take more than 20 min or if I have lotsa time. Sometimes when I go out to run at night, I end up strolling bad, to enjoy the night breeze and contemplate life.

Hello dear wolfie. Speaking of walking, I have to say that I love walking, especially when I am in a big city for a visit. I do not like to take a bus if I get to the downtown area and can walk for the whole day without even taking a bus. Two years ago, when my beloved old mom came to Hangzhou to see me, my wife and I took her for a long-time walk in the city around the huge famous West Lake with so many scenic spots. We did not want to take a travelling bus because we wanted to see more of the scenic spots on foot. We started to walk from nine in the morning till nine o'clcok in the evening. When we felt tired, we sat down for a rest and then went on. Tired as we were, we were very happy for this. The next day we went on walking to visit the rest part of the scenic spots around the lake. So it took us two days for this visit around the beautiful lake. I love walking and I am not afraid of getting tired. By the way, I wish you were feeling better today after seven hours of reading this discussion of yours. Have a good rest, wolfie.

I go to a gym now and although I can run/walk further than I can at the gym (I really prefer my own pace over the pace of machines) I run for :30 and then bike for an hour. That is about two miles (3.2KM) running and 20 miles biking (32KM). I try to do this three times a week and that is really getting my legs in shape. When I was running on the street I would run much harder for a much less period of time (one mile in ten minutes) and no biking. The good thing about a gym is it doesn't matter what the weather is like... I can workout whenever I want to but I still get out every now and again and walk a mile or so just to get some fresh air and clear my head which is hard to do in a gym. Great question. Thanks Zelo

I wouldn't mind the long walk if it was warm outside, but since it is still very cold here in Canada, I can't walk very far. I have problems with my ears and if they get cold inside them I would suffer greatly. This would be the only reason why I wouldn't want to do the walk. I love to walk and I do walk a lot in the summer but if it is a windy day, whether warm or not, I have to have something over my ears or I get the wind blowing in them and then I suffer again. For me it just isn't worth the suffering and pain. You walked about 6 miles in one 1 1/2 hours, not bad. Did you take your time or did you walk briskly. I would think you walked briskly because that is a far walk to make in such a short time. I say good for you, my friend.

I thought I walked quite slowly but if what you say is right then I must be really fast. A 6 mile walk takes me between 45 and 60 minutes!

I love going for walks on nice days! Usually, if I'm just going for a leisurly walk, I'll walk about 3 or 4 miles. I find it's a good way to think and or clear my head while getting fresh air and exercise at the same time. I think the farthest I have ever walked is 20 miles; that was when I had a job about 20 miles from home and my car wouldn't start after work one day. I couldn't get anyone to pick me up so I had to walk. That took about 6 hours or so, give or take.

Sounds like you had a lovely day, Im so envious, all that time to sit and enjoy and read a book, what bliss!! I used to walk for miles and miles, I live in the countryside and so there are some beautiful walks. When it was just me and my firstborn son we would often go for long walks with our dog and go and see the cows and sheep in the fields, we would round the evening off with a drink in a pub garden, we would be shattered by the time we got in. I havent done it for ages, but I do walk everywhere anyway and I walk to school and back everyday so I dont do too bad. Its great exercise.

I am slowly building up my walking again after foot surgery in January. We have a husky and he requires a lot of exercise. I used to get in 6 miles a day just walking him in the afternoons. The longest I went was a 12 mile walk with my Alaskan Husky back when we both lived in Alaska. I love walking in the forest, but here in the UK they are harder to come by. It's just not the same without the bears munching on the berries in the autumn. I do miss it.

Special and Important ones - Our love ones matter but do we consider them special or important.
I walk 30 minutes a day in the neighborhood and at least 3 hours hike to visit some mountains here in my town. I feel that our heart also need some exercise to keep it going healthy and smart. I know that my present city residence got unhealthy air so a walk in the mountain side will be a healthy habit to make a healthy heart keep going.

I'm so tiny I look like a grapefruit behind the wheel of a vehicle, so I do a lot of walking. Good shoes and a water bottle and I'm good to go for days. I remember once visiting a lake where friends had a rather isolated cottage and taking my camera, my water skin and an extra pair of socks, in case my feet got wet and tramping around the woods and shoreline for hours. I was so absorbed in my picture taking and the changing light affects on the pics I was taking, that it didn't really dawn on me that it was getting dark! I ended up lost of course and wasn't found until the next morning by a boater who was checking the shoreline looking for my body! LOL Good thing I was smart enough to go to the shore at all. Later on it was figured out that I had wandered about 35 kms in total. Now I carry a cell phone! LOL
