I just got a 4 month old male basset hound puppy. He is so cute and sweet, BUT, he is not potty trained, nor does he seem to want to be. He also pees when he gets nervous or excited. The barking is annoying too, but i'd rather focus on the potty training. He will NOT use the puppy training pads in doors. He will not let mek now if he wants out. He will just stop wherever he is and "go". Because he is a hound dog, his nose is stuck the floor all the time, so its hard to tell if he's just being a normal hound dog and smelling around..or if he needs to go potty. I take him out first thing in the morning and shortly after he eats/drinks. Usually he does something when we are outside and I wait as long as it takes if im sure he needs to go..but he's still going in the house too. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

I would say try the pen. It works for most dogs. It wouldn't work for my dog, though. She had no issue with laying in it. She's kind of nasty!
What we had to do for her, was just let her every hour, and then slowly increase the time. If we caught her going, we would say "Let's go get 'em!" which was already the keyword for our other dog, then we would get them both out the door. We also made sure she watched us put her poop outside, so she would know that was where she was supposed to go. My husband made the mistake of flushing it down the toilet after she was most of the way potty trained, so now, if we don't see her when she goes to the door, she goes into the bathroom and goes in there! She can be such a pain! We've had her for almost three years, and still sometimes during the winter she will go into the bathroom, instead of asking to go out.

What everyone is saying about a kennel is correct. A dog will not pee where they sleep. Our puppy loves her kennel and even goes inside in the evening when she is ready for bed..
another suggestion I have noticed that no one mentioned is when the puppy does go inside and after you have cleaned up the mess. Get a spray bottle and fill it half and half with ammonia and water. Spray the area where the dog peed. This deters them from peeing in the same spot..I only had to do this with my dog about 4-5 times, but then again, some say a hound is harder, but using this mixture may speed things up some..:)

This is the hardest thing you have to go through when having a puppy..My dog is a very small dog but it took a while to train her..I would take her out all of the time over and over, and she is now one year and 3 months, and she is finally trained...When i would see her wet the floor i would grab her up and run her out side, and say (Potty) it was hard training her...When she finally got the message she was supposs to go outside, she would hide to use the potty inside,,,then i got mad because she was just being lazy so i would spank her and fuss at her and take her outside..Now she will go to the door and bark, and we say to her.."You gotta go Potty? and let her out..It was very hard and time consuming..Now i talked with a dog expert and they said to keep them in a pen inside the house while potty training, and they would Not use their pen to potty,so take them out side over and over and while inside keep them in their pen..I did not do this but they claim it works, and after they potty give them a treat...

ok our dog was around the same age when we got her. this is what we did. We had a cage for her. For the first week or so she spent almost all her time in the cage. I would let her out every hour or so to go to the bathroom and then give her a few minutes out of the cage to play then I would put her back in the cage. I kept doing this and then would increase the amount of time that she got to stay out of her cage. After a few weeks she was able to stay out all day and not have any accidents. Up until she was 1-1/2 yr old she still peed alittle when someone would come over, she would get so excited.

Unfortunately, basset hounds are very very stubborn. I had bought one at the time i was pregnant because i wanted a dog in the house when they baby got there so that they would grow up together. It didn't last long. The one that I had would stay outside, literally, for an hour or longer and not do anything but pee and then would go straight in the house and poop. It made me so mad. He wouldn't go to the door or anything, wouldn't use puppy pads. Would make the biggest mess in the bathroom at night because i couldn't let him stay out on our carpet. I finally got rid of him because I couldn't take it anymore and no matter how much i tried to get him to go outside he refused. I am sorry i don't have any words of encouragement for you on this situation, but they are honestly very stubborn dogs and when they decided where they wanna go, they go and won't go anywhere else. Good luck to you though and God bless

Remember, he is still very young. Basset hounds and beagles are some of the hardest dogs to potty train. He will get it eventually, but in the mean time, you will be taking him on lots of potty walks. As to the barking, well, he is a hound. They bark. ALot. there is not much that you can humanely do to him to get him to stop barking. Yep, you will hear of shock collars and such, but those are cruel.
With young puppies, they typically need to pee every 20-30 minutes. It is alot of work.
