Why is he a she, and she a she, and it a she?

I was just answering a comment in one of my other discussions and noticed that this particular person referred to their computer as a she. Why is it that everyone always refers to everything as a she? Your car is a she, your computer is a she and so on and so forth? Don't you find that to be true and why do you suppose that is? Have you ever owned a car or an appliance or a computer or something of that nature and given it a female name or in fact do you look at objects as males?

Haven't you known anyone that called their car by a female name?

Yeah. That practice can be seen all around but I don't have the same trip. I talk in the manner that I think is right. Maybe it's just their poetic license (or maybe not) or they're trying to be figurative; or maybe not again. I don't know what they have in mind as I haven't asked anyone I hear practicing it why he/she does that.

Wow! Really? LOL! I would want to believe that women are now becoming a big impact on life and on things.
I don't name certain things except for my pets.

Many languages don't have the English "it" to name objects or animals, and the people from those countries may be referring to objects by "he" or "she" just by the power of habit.
Of course, other people actually personify objects by calling them "he" or "she", but I don't know why they do that... I don't get it either. Maybe they are very attached to that object.

I don't refer to my computer or car as a he or she to be honest, it's just an 'it' an inanimate object that has no names. I know a lot of people have pet names for their cars for example but I it's not something I have done. Providing it goes, it's reliable I don't give a damn really.

Why does every woman assume that my cat is a "she"?
Because he is not... and he does not look queer either. lol
I was born in France...
And the French vocabulary has a masculin or feminin for everything.
Now I can tell you that...
A computer is masculin
And a car is feminin
A website is masculin
And both this question and discussion are feminin.
Cheers... Aussies2007

You know I have never really thought about it. Our last car we had we called it Gertrude as it was such an old car but still ran really well.
Our new car we have we named it Red Dragon only because that is what my son calls it.

I've never thought about that before. Perhaps it's a protective thing. Men were always brought up to revere and honour women (I know, we've interpreted this in a funny and not so funny way from time to time), and to protect them, especially when they were having our human young. Until the middle of the 19th century, husbands effectively owned their wives, so it may be that this was extended into our other "possessions". May also be related to usage. Women traditionally ironed - the iron becomes feminine. Not sure where that leaves boats and trains though.

I've never realized that and I was never taught in school about addressing such as computer as she. Well, I guess the female are getting popular nowadays.

Good question!
I know most of the items that we name an item (usually a vehicle) we usually also refer to as 'old faithful' or some other term of endearment.
Of course we women always come through, so maybe that's it!

I have always wondered about that I think I havecalled my computer she a few times but never knew why really.but usually I do not give names like he and she to appliances just my computer which is really odd. I have heard people talk about their boats as she and wondered why.
