Short or Long articles better?

Do you think it is better to write longer articles or AC or shorter ones?
The reason I ask is because I submitted my first article which was a little over 400 words and it was accepted for an upfront payment, which I was thrilled about. About a week later I submitted another article that was over 1200 words and it was accepted for upfront payment also. Great right? The only thing is they offered me the same amount of money for the 400 words as they did for the 1200.
Does this happen often? I was just thinking maybe it was better to submit smaller 400 word articles if I am going to get paid the same for them as the longer ones.

I seem to remember reading somewhere on there forums that 400-800 words is ideal. Why? Because the vast majority of online readers want short concise articles that give us the information we want without any fluff. When people see long articles they are less inclined to read the entire thing.

Thanks, that does make sense. I know when I see a long article, even if it's something I am interested in, I want to run away.
Maybe the better thing to do is split them in to two different articles. I think that would be easy to do with this article I have.

There ya go! You can't go wrong with turning 1 article into a couple. Just make sure they are not cookie cutter (looks similar) and also make sure they are good works by themselves. Granted you can link to your other articles relating to the same topic and increase your viewers not to mention some extra links which the search engines like.

It depends on the topic more than the length. If you're just adding a bunch of words to increase the length, it doesn't make it a better article. However, sometimes you'll have to write a longer article to explain yourself. If it's a good topic, they'll usually pay more. A lot of times, they'll reject short articles for not having enough details.

I know what you mean about adding a bunch of words just to make it longer, but that wasn't the case here. I know it was well oranized - so maybe it wan't a good topic?

Sometimes I get paid more for shorter articles than I do the longer ones. I think it depends more on quality of articles.
