Compromise - When there is only 1 computer but 2 people wanting to use!

One of my daughters is back home at the moment and now wants to be online on the computer as much as I do. It is fabulous having her home, but my time on MyLot has gone down big time in the last few days, so apologies to all my friends if I haven't been responding as much as usual but I have to allow her her time on another site to talk to her friends too. How do I get the balance right? I have even considered getting a laptop and going wireless so we both can use at same time. Does this happen in your household and if so how do you compromise? Please share. Ellie :D

well, you are slightly luckier than me. I have to wrestle the computer with my 3 eldest children. They need it for project work, chat discussions, play games and you know what stuff kids get into these days. What I did is that, apart from cooking, I spend the whole morning on the computer. When they get from school in the afternoon and evening, they will take turns to surf. Then, I'll do all my house chores during that time. I can even surf a few hours at night when they go to sleep at 10. Purchasing a laptop is another great way too.

Oh yes I am lucky to only have to wrestle with one other for computer time, but had got used to being able to use just for me. Last night I got home from work early and she went to bed not long after so I spent an hour then and she is at work this morning so I am online now. We'll work it out. Ellie :D

Well when I seen this it certainly sounded exactly what we were going through in our house a couple of months ago.
I owned a laptop years ago and went travelling so gave it to my Mum and little sister who were not really that bothered with it and when I came back and moved home the laptop gave up on us anyway. My sister had been downloading music from a really bad site so the thing was riddled with viruses.
Mum and I split in for a new PC and we really did pay half each. So my Mum wanted some entertainment one night so I showed her how to play Literati, then my sister discovered mySpace and I had myLot.
For ages we just shared the one computer but it was like someone was always wanting on and you felt like you HAD to come off when you had been on for an hour.
My mum loves her Literati and now her messenger is full of friends that she looks out for being online so she can play against them so she decided to buy us a laptop between us off of eBay for 200 quid.
Basically we kind of got ripped off cos the harddrive was failing and I had to pay 75 pound to replace it but now we do have the two.
Me and Emma share the laptop. If my Mum is in then we are not allowed to use the PC but it works out fine for us cos Emma has to go to bed at 10pm and I like to stay up late anyway and I work all weekend so I can go on mostly when I want and vice versa.
Getting a second computer was definately the best thing that we ever done.

Yeah it said it was refurbished and working fine. So we got it and it came with a 7 day return policy.#
After about two weeks the harddrive started dying before conking out completely and the guy just said it was outwith the 7 day return period so no chance of him refunding or repairing. I got it repaired myself but I sent him a really long complaining email just saying that basically there is no way I broke that harddrive in the amount of time I had it. And that he was a bad businessman if he was not willing to refund the cost.
I did open a dispute on paypal and he said I could return it for refund minus 15% even though he knew I had got a brand new harddrive put in it.
He was an idiot.
SO don't buy it off eBay.

Yeah like you would return it getting less than the money paid minus money spent on new hardrive and him getting it back with a new hardrive in uurgh, yeah glad you didn't return it to him. Did he think you were that stupid, honestly some people! I have never had any problems with ebay personally but then haven't bought electricals, but I will look around locally and see what deals I can find, thanks for sharing your experience because would have checked on there first otherwise. Thank you so much for sharing, I think you have definately talked me into getting another, its her birthday next month and my eldest daughter who is away at university has her own anyway so soundslike the perfect solution and no more thinking about what to get her for her birthday eh! She is going to see a band tonight with her mates so I get to go on all evening, yippee, and I'm out tomorrow and she is in so she will have her time too bless. So will share til I managed to get one.
Will take heed from your bad experience, sorry to hear that the laptop you got wasn't up to scratch.

Hi Ellie!
There's a Gadget called a KVM Splitter that allows you to hook up 2 monitors and keyboards to one computer,so 2 users can work the same machine..It could be useful if you didn't want to go the new computer route..I think they're about $100-would you have an old monitor lying around?

Thank You! :) I'm Sorry I was so late joining your discussion! I don't have experience of this setup myself, but I thought it might be of interest to you when you were maybe looking for alternatives to another puter in the house! Most machines (certainly nowadays) have more computing power than one person can use-the machine can multitask, and another user shouldn't hurt much..

Hi I wish you had answered earlier as have just ordered a wi-fi package complete with laptop for my daughter. Have upgraded with exsisting provider so hasn't cost too much more and will save in other areas, but this KVM splitter sounds wonderful, may still look into this as son is getting older, has even done his bit by adding to a discussion here one night (he is only 4)I have a spare keyboard and do know where I can get a free monitor also. Thank you so much for making me aware of this. An excellent idea. Ellie :D

Well, it is a matter of who is free and who uses it first.
I too share a computer with my wife. There is no problem with who gets what first. As long as the computer is free, the other person can use it.
No particular arrangement to use the computer.
If you have a spare, setting up a wireless would definitely be a good way to share the same connection.
If your daughter is back only for a short period of time, then let it be. No point spending money on a laptop just to use the net for that period. We'd all still be here to post on your posting when your daughters go home. No worries!

Hi Ahgong, I managed to get her a free laptop as part of a package with my ISP provider when I upgraded to wi-fi so she can use that anywhere she is and we are both happy. It also means that when my eldest daughter is home from university as she has her own laptop she cacn go online too. I am pleased to hear that your wife are able to share well. Ellie :D

I guess I look at this a little differently. You don't say home from where, or her age. If she has moved back home from being independent then why should you have to give up your computer time, or be responsible for buying her a laptop? I bought my children a computer for Christmas, but they are school age and live at home. Not trying to be hard nosed here, but sometimes I think parents go above board where grown children are concerned. How will they ever learn to stand on their own two feet.

Hi Olivebranch, I understand completely where you are coming from but my daughter is only 16 and because of situation and circumstances has been lving away from home to finish her education I now feel that now she has returned and her 17th bithday looming I should try to make a compromise. She has been through a lot without going into detail. My eldest is at university and supports herself. The first thing this daughter did upon arriving back home was to offer me a 1/3rd of her very first wage packet which I declined and said go and enjoy, but for future ones she knows this is the score. I am a loving but very fair mother. Thanks for your input it is really appreciated because I am also aware a lot of parents do mollycoddle theirsiblings in this way. I am not one of those. Ellie :D

OK With her being 16 I understand your wanting to provide for her needs, I just didn't know if she was older, or what. Yes I would do the same under these circumstances, as I said, I got my children one for Christmas. What I would suggest though is to get the laptop for yourself, that way if you want some time to yourself, you can take it to another room, or even take it when you travel. I have the laptop in our family, and I thoroughly enjoy it. I keep it at my chair, have taken it on trips and vacation, if I am sick I can take it to my room, or if I want to sit outside I can do that. I hope things work out for you and your daughter, and everything runs smoothly as you try to settle back into each others lives. Blessings

when i was still a student, me and my sister kinda compete with the use of our computer at home. but that happens occasionally because even if we are both at home during weekends, both of us go out on a different schedule. sometimes, if she's out, i'm at home. if i'm out, she's at home. so we seldom bicker over the computer. ^__^;;
but now, my sister already has two kids and a husband to care for, we don't compete for the computer anymore. she rarely use the computer now because she's often with her kids at their house. and the computer kinda became mine because i'm now the one solely spending for its maintenance and internet service. nobody else in the family is interested in computer. lucky me. ^__^

hi ellie. i guess you are right. i have the right for its exclusive use. i love the sound of it.
wow. you're such a generous mom! you're gonna give her a laptop complete with wifi? awesome. i wish my mother was that generous too! but i'm not saying i don't like my mother the way she is right now. she's perfectly fine for me. but she just hasn't given me any expensive gifts like that.
i'm glad you can share your computer conveniently. ^__^

Oh yes Oh lucky you, but you are paying for the maintenance and it is in the home you live and your sister no longer there so it is only right that you get exclusive use. I have in fact ordered a package which comes complete with wi-fi and a laptop so my daughter will have her own to take with her wherever she goes. It is her birthday next month so that is her present from me, but am on a limited budget so by upgrading was able to get a great gift for her. Until then we will share. I am online now whilst she is at work because I don't start until later so she will go on when she gets home so we are managing to sort it quite well now. Thank you so much for sharing. Ellie :D

I have seven children, so I know exactly what you mean! I know the library allows thirty minutes per user, and if nobody else is waiting, then you can have another thirty minutes! I try to limit the children's usage to one hour a day, as that is the new suggestion by doctors. They say one hour of television or computer usage, as children are becoming obese at an alarming rate! You will notice during holidays and weekends, that I am not online as much, due to giving the kids their time, or that I am online much more at night and during school hours, so I can get some time and concentrate too!

Our library does an hour, and that's where I got the idea to use AOL to log my kids off and keep it fair. When we used the oven timer, they would forget to set it, add extra minutes when they didn't do THEIR chore first, etc.

Wow seven how lovely, never a lonely moment for anyone in your household. My daughter is older so works so we both want at same time usually, but I have no resolved the problem by getting a wi-fi upgrade and a laptop for her which should arrive in about 10 days time. We will share until then. Ellie :D

Well you cerainly solved your proble, by getting another one and this is what I have chosen to do now. I have ordered an upgrade to wireless and part of the package includes a laptop so I can use main computer and daughter can use laptop wherever she want whenever she wants eh! Got to wait about 10 days for it to be set up but I am sure we will be able to manage to share until then. Thank you for your response. Ellie :D

I thought that had responded to this a few days ago. But I see that I couldn't have. Apart from violence I think that you have to work out a share rota. She gets early mornings, and mid evenings (oh, asleep first thing out with her friends later. Sorry love you can't have everything in life) and you get the rest of the day. Ellie my dear, you need wifi and a laptop I think. Give her the laptop. The keyboard's a menace to use, you can't get comfy using it to type. Whilst you can sit up at the table, back straight, sensibly sized screen the right distance away and use a proper keyboard. Problem solved. (apart from the £500 to equip yourself).

Good thing for me, I do not have to share my laptop with anyone in the house. My laptop is like a personal thing for me, just like my cellphone nobody touches them except me...lol...Well, if I'm in that situation, maybe we could schedule the use of computer.

It does happen with my sister 3 years ago when we had only 1 computer. It's really quite annoying when both of us want to use it at the same time, specially if we need to get both our homework done in the computer. What my parents just did was bought another computer, and it had really been worth it. It's now more convenient to the both of us. Right now my mom bought her own laptop to use it for office work.
I really suggest buying another computer, however if your actually planning on saving. I suggest taking turns, if you had been in the computer all day, then it's just right to let your daughter have a chat with her friends unless you really need the computer badly.

Oh! Just a thought btw, you could probably have her consider joining myLot under your referral if she already had her laptop, since she might also refer it to her friends and have them chat here - boosting your earnings... Haha...

My husband and I both insist on having our own computer, and when we got married we both had our own computer. I have a laptop, and he has a desktop. We both love being able to do what we need to do and want to do at the precise moment we want to do it.

Thats great that you have both always had your own, in fact since posting this I have now upgraded to a wireless network and part of the package was a free laptop so we are both happy now, my eldest daughter also arrived home yesterday from uni with her laptop so timed it really well as now we can all go on together. Many thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Since I am on the computer all week long my husband uses the computer on the weekends. I get frustrated though because sometimes I think he is just doing it so I can't use it. He only plays card games on the internet and checkers, so he doesn't do any work. I let him play on the computer for a few hours and then I ask him if he can get off and let me do some of my work. Sometimes he will get off and let me on, but most of the time he says no. It's his turn. I have thought about getting another computer but can't really afford it, so I just have to put up with it and let my work slide by on the weekends.

Well I suppose weekends are for relaxing anyway. Thanks for sharing, but I have now got an upgrade package that included a laptop so she can have that for her birthday and I get to use my computer. I also have my other daughter arriving back for Easter as she has a lot of revision for uni and she has her own laptop so to go wi-fi seemed right. More expensive but saved in other areas, like didn't have to buy laptop and will save on phone bill too. Ellie :D

There is only one workable solution where no one is displaced, angry or irritable and that is to get a second computer. There are plenty of cheap ways to do it too, but unless you want the laptop don't let yourself be the displaced one with a lesser computer.

Yes a second computer is definately the answer, I will let my daughter have the laptop because I prefer a desk top myself, can't get used to not having a mouse on laptop. Have found a great package which is actually going to work out about the same price as I'm paying out now which includes a new laptop and a wirless system. So no squabbling over online time anymore eh!. Thank you for your response. Ellie :D
