Old music better than what had been coming up this generation

I don't know what's wrong with me. People of my same age might think I am uncool for saying this, but I definitely love the old music that my parents used to be playing. Their disco, love songs... particularly in the 80's had been soothing to my ears. In fact, I am not particularly interested in anything that had been coming up this generation unless they are love songs or chinese songs. Raps, rocks, RNB or whatever turns me off immediately just listening to the first 5-7 sec of the tune, yet I can't believe people of my age likes these stuffs! YUCK... but it's just me anyway. Sometimes I wish music can go back to when they used to be...

It is unusual for a 20 year old... But at the same time... I know a lot of 20 year old who appreciate the music of the sixties and seventies as much as they like the music of today. Lets face it... the music as we know it today... was invented in the 50's and 60's. Everyting since 1970 has been a cheap copy of that era as nobody has been able to come up with a lasting formula. We all remember the names of most artists from the 50s and 60's... and even quite a few from the 70's. But who will remember the artists of the last 15 years?

Really? You mean there are still a LOT of 20 year old who do appreciate old music? Usually, I thought it was a turn off for most of them. When a professor of ours brings his radio in the class to have us listen to old music, most of my classmates response are bad. Particularly the girls, they thought it was a turn off... sheesh... I had to hide that I actually like the music.

Actually... it is not those who just listen to music... but those with a passion for music. Any 20 year old who want to become a musician or a singer... cannot ignore the sixties and seventies. Even if he is going to sing hip hop. Because the roots of music go back to those decades. All the singers of the sixties were inspired by the black american singers of the 50's. All the singers of the 70's were inspired by the singers of the 60's... but they tried to come up with a new formula... and only a few succeeded. The 80's were a brand new formula with Michael Jackson and Madonna... probably the two biggest names of that decade. There are some big names out there... but they only appeal to the young generation under 30. Like U2. The last of the superstars would have to be Madonna. She is in a very select club... the club of those who can last more than 20 years and still top the charts.

I'm an 18 year old and I am with you my friend! I love old songs especially the 80's! My friend and I used to joke around that our fave station was this one that plays these old songs that nobody listens to. haha! =)But I think that every generation has some weird songs, the 80's definitely had some weird tunes, the metal did start out around that age right? Or was it 90's? And now i guess they're expanding the boundaries therefore more weird music. Classical music is my fave though. I love any kind of music actually, but the oldies will have a special place in my heart.

My son is the same as you. He loves the oldies, 60s, 70s and 80s are his favourites. There's nothing wrong in that... I can't stand rap either, nor can he. Some of the older groups and singers are still going, because they were so much better. Nowadays, they make up to three records and they're gone! You definitely can't beat the oldies and there are a lot of young people feel the same way. Brightest Blessings.

I tend to think the music itself influenced him, rather than me. Of course, I helped, because I used to play the records, but he became a huge Buddy Holly Fan, and has a boxed set of his LPs. :)

I think you might have influenced him somehow, just like how my parents had influenced me on these kind of music :)

I appreciate music between the 50s and 80s a lot more than the music now. It all just seems tasteless. It's either cheesey, contains curse after curse or or is just too dull for me to keep interested in. Sure I love the music from now, just not as much as I love the music from back in my parents day. And I'm 18!

Believe it or not, I'm not much into EMO music and the new one's today. In fact, I'm even into ballads and love songs. Whenever I play my guitar, it is old music that I play on and some old school rock. I really can't get the hand of today's music, even our own OPM has lost it's touch ever since E-heads decided to split-up..

We are exactly identical, for a male... I also like love songs and ballads. I really really hate singers today who shout like mad on songs.

Well... it's really good to know that you at least appreciate old songs, although I am not really into some types of songs you just mentioned hehe... but just want to ask though since you seem to be a woman. Do your female friends also like these stuffs? If not, do you have to hide it from them that you like old songs? Because from my experience, girls are usually the ones who get turned off immediately.

Not all of the young people listen to the stuff that is played now a days. Personally I can make no sense out of the music of today. My grandkids love the music from my era and play it quite often. They are 10, 12 and 13. They listen to just about any kind of music.

I really agree with you! You know what, I'm 20s too and I can't stand listening to modern musics. It makes my head headache. Oldies band like Herman's Hermits, The Beatles, Bee Gees and so on makes me feels more relaxings. Slow song like loves songs also the types of songs that I likes.

Yes, I understand it's really just about taste, but I just don't get how they could get to like people shouting and stuffs or raps with just words that had no real tune in them. I guess there might never be an answer to this question, just like how you might not get why I love oldies songs. Hehe...

If it's unusual for a 20 year old to prefer music of the past, is it unusual, too for a 39 year old to like the songs of today? I love the music of Maroon5, Craig David and Jamiroquai. I may not be that knowledgeable of all their songs, but I like their style. You know, it really doesn't matter what generation you belong to and what type of music you prefer...music is art and just like beauty it is in the eye of the beholder, in this case, in the ears of the listener.

39 years old is not that old hehe... but I do agree with you that it doesn't matter what generation we belong to. My parents also do like Maroon5, although not that much.

Actually its not music that is poor today, beats are better but wording of song makes it poor. In olden days, words comes first then music, today music beat comes first and words gets filled in

Actually after reading that... I did come to realize that probably the singers and lyrics are what makes a music great. Beats are just beats after all

agree!, today it is full of "Baby" and "oohh, AAHHhh", violent & harsh words, there are few songs that you can still considered music to my ears, and song from the heart(the real one), unlike in the old days like boys2men (who is one off the original and real Boy bands) and air Supply, carpenters, and the love songs fo David pomeranz. as well in the local scene gere in the philippines, the sounds of APO and PArokya ni edgar, etc and dont forget the songs of ray Valera(who i think almost of his song became a movie title or a soap opera).

I used to like boy bands haha... particularly "Backsteet Boys". Almost all of their song are good and had a great melody, too bad though that people change and they seem to like songs that had rappy tunes or anything that is not of my taste at the moment.
