Is this just a female thing?

I often stay at my friends house. Three guys renting a place together. I actually consider their place pretty clean considering they are men and I quite like being there.
One thing though that I can't help but moan about when I am there is the fact they never think to stick on a lamp. They will quite happily sit there watching the telly with the big light glaring.
I always moan until they let me put on the lamps and turn off the ceiling light and my girlfriend Michelle says she is the same when she gets there before me - she wants on the lamps too but the guys don't seem to see what the issue is.
I live at home with my Mum and sister and we would never think to put on the big light ever, as soon as we walk in and its dark we go straight over and turn on the lamps.
So I wanna hear opinions, do the men you know always have on the big light and why?
Why can men not see that the big light is horrible?
I blame it on migraines even although I get migraines regarless of whether I am surrounded by lamps or main lights lol.

Well I have several small lamps on a remote, I only turn the main lights on to clean or something. I hate places that are too brightly lit.

Well I bought my remotes in a sale at homebase, they just plug in a socket and the plug, plugs into them, my stereo is also on one. Lets me turn beside lamp on from main room and main room lamps from bed. Don't know what happened my star rating, don't really care about it. Guess I just offended some people.

hmmmm intresting I live with 2 guys (my fiance and my brother) normally we have the big light on until we all sit down to watch a movie or some TV. We dont have any lamps in out living room so we usually turn on the kitchen light of the hall light which kind of works like lamps
The guys dont seem to mind there usually the ones to hit the lights before i get a chance to LOL
I also get migraines often but anything can trigger mine ugh!!!

I really find the lamp thing so frustrating that I thought loads of people would be commenting this agreeing with me but it seems like I just have "issues" with lights lol.l

Do you know you could be right cos its not like they have come up with a reason not to have them on and they only go on if I go and physically do it myself.

Gathering from what you have posted I believe you are a fan for dim lights and soft settings. As to having the ceiling lights on whilst watching tv is actually more of a health issue. I think unknown to you - it is actually good for your eyes to have a light source between your tv and you. Also, with this practice, the chances of radiation is also reduced.
I think if you do not like the glaring effects of a normal ceiling light, I can suggest you get one which is color corrected ones. They are much more kind to your eyes and liking. Also, you may want to have some aromatherapy (Geranium and Lavender) whilst you watch tv. or read to give some relief for your migraine. Most of all you need to relax.

I don't know, I don't see it a problem turning on the overhead light. The only time I turn on the lamps is when I am in bed and reading, then I leave the overhead light off and use the lamp so that when I am ready to go to sleep, I don't have to get out of bed to turn off the light. And I am a female. I hardly ever turn on the lamps in the livingroom when I am watching TV. It doesn't bother me to turn on the overhead light instead of the lamps so I guess I just haven't thought about it. But now that you mention it I will probably think about it now.

I hadn't seen this discussion for a few days and must say that the thought of sitting watching the telly with an overhead light on would really really annoy me.
It is starting to look though like I have issues lol.
