As of this morning, I am the proud owner of my very own crock pot slow cooker. It was a deal I couldn't pass up on at Walmart. Only $17.48 (cdn)!! The box says it's a 3 quart size, and "perfect for a 3lb roast or chicken".
I'm kind of excited about this purchase. I don't adore cooking, but I do love the idea of a one pot clean up, and not having to have the oven on to make roasts, especially when it gets so terribly hot in the summer.
The problem is that I have no idea how to cook anything in it, aside from spaghetti sauce or chili con carni on the stovetop, and letting the crock pot keep it warm. Sad, isn't it?
My dear mylotters, I am coming to you for help and suggestions and will bookmark this discussion for future reference. What EASY recipes do you have for slow cookers? What different kinds of meats can I put in it? How much water with them? How long does it need to cook? (my crock pot has 2 temperature settings).

Well, congrats! Being the owner of a crock pot will prove to be the best investment yet. My mother would tell me that you can get up and throw the ingreedients before you leave to work, turn it on and when you walk into the door after 6-8 hours, your meal is ready.
I've made this soup near 5 times and my family LOVES IT! If you live in a very cold state, then this is definately one to warm your tummys.
INGREDIENTS:
7 to 8 cups of cubed peeled potatoes
4 cups chicken broth
1 cup water
2 large onions, chopped, about 2 cups
3/4 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots
2 tablespoons dried dill weed
1/4 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 to 2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
PREPARATION:
In a large slow cooker, combine potatoes, broth, water, onion, celery, carrots, dill weed, and butter. Cover and cook on high for 7 hours or until the vegetables are tender. Stir in milk and season with salt and pepper to taste; continue cooking to heat through. Use a hand mixer or potato masher to blend some of the potatoes to thicken soup. To thicken further use instant potato flakes; to thin soup, add a little whole or skim milk.

I haven't tried it yet, but I do have this discussion bookmarked so that I can try out some of the suggestions.
I've only done one item in the crock pot since I bought it last week.. a roast beef.

You may like to make your favourite beef stews with it - just prepare the ingredients in the daytime, set it on auto and you will have it nice and done by dinner.
Over here in the orient, we use it to make our soups, chinese herbal drinks and hot desserts.
Soups like Lotus Roots with Pork Ribs, Potatoes with Pork Ribs, Black Beans with Chicken Feet/Pork Ribs, Beef Tendons Stew, Ginseng Chicken and many more.
For desserts - Rock Sugar White Fungus with Lotus Seeds, Red Beans Sweets, Walnut Paste, Almond Paste, Gingko Nuts with Rock Sugar and many more.
As you can see much of these items requires long time brewing to make the soup tasty and nutritious so without time to tend to the cooking process the slow cooker actually becomes a very useful and mandatory kitchen tool for us working class people.

Oh yes, there are a lot of nice oriental desserts you can do with the slow cooker. You may try this simple one for a start Green beans and rock sugar. Good for digestion and cooling of inner heat in our bodies.

I never thought that green beans could be a dessert. I didn't think any vegetables were considered desserts to be honest, no matter how they were cooked.

I have a slow cooker and love cooking with it. The temperature you cook on depends on if you want to cook it 8 hours or 4. You don't need to add water with your meat. I usually add soup or tomatoes depending on the recipe. You could probably do a search engine on slow cooking recipes and find hundres of recipes to make. The cooker should have come with a small book tht has a few recipes in it. I love making Chili in mine. You just throw everything in the pot put the lid on, turn the heat on to hi or low and just leave it. It's great if you are at work all day then when you come home, your meal is ready! Happy cooking!

I'm home all day, and so technically have plenty of time to make big and proper meals... but I'm more interested in having only one pot to clean up at the end, and not having to do much of anything during the whole cooking process. Yes, I'm lazy. :P

I love to cook a roast in my slow cooker. :) I usually get chuck roast but any kind that you prefer will work.
What I do is cook the roast by itself just in water for two or three hours until it is almost done. After this I pour the water off which gets rid of a lot of the grease. Then I add potatoes, carrots and Cream of Mushroom soup with just a little bit of water to make it like a gravy. This is very simple and very tasty!!
Another thing I like to make in a slow cooker is cheese dip. I pour a little bit of milk into the bottom of the slow cooker and let it be getting warm while I cut up the cheese. I then add the cheese, sausage and a can of Rotel tomatoes. As the cheese melts I just stir the ingredients about every 20 minutes or so until the cheese is completely melted. It is then ready to serve with chips.
Great discussion!!!

I like that idea of dumping out the grease and drippings and replacing it with soup.

Usually crock pots have recipe book in them along with the instruction on caring for the pot. You can cook any type of meat in the crock pot that you like. I have cooked meat loaf roasts chickens and more. I have even cooked a complete meal in mine like I would have fixed in the oven. I foil wrap potatoes for baking and put them on top of the meat. I have also made stuffing or dressing and wrapped it in foil and put on top of a chicken to cook along with the potatoes. Here is a web sitee that has many crock pot recipes http://southernfood.about.com/library/crock/blcpidx.htm

I haven't even opened the box yet, so I'm not sure if my new crock pot comes with a little recipe booklet. Thanks for the link.. it must be popular, the person before you posted the same one. ;)

i have 3 crock pots lol. i have the really old one that I will never get rid of cause it was moms before it was mine. I have my really good one I use all the time (I love it love it love it) and then I have the one I don't use for food (I use it for wax or dipping stuffed animals or for making candles).
Here is a great meatball recipe:
1 or 2 bags of frozen meatballs (2 if the bags are small)
1 small jar of grape jelly
1 jar of chili sauce
Thow it all in the crockpot put it on low let it cook till dinner time. I know it sounds wierd but it is delicious and they are great over egg noodles or rice.

I also like to make beef or pork roast in my cooker. Use a large roast that just fits in the pan. Cut slits in the roast with a sharp knife and insert slivers of garlic (as much as you like - we use alot)
Slice an onion and add on top of the roast with salt and pepper. Add about 1 tablespoon of water, cover and cook all day on low.
If you like your roasts a little less done inside, then put them in frozen.

That's good to know they can be put in frozen without too much ill affect.

Ham hocks and beans. Take a package of white beans (or any type that you like), cover with water and heat just until they start to boil, then turn the water off and let them sit over night.
The next morning, drain and rinse the beans then put them into the crock pot with 2 ham hocks, a couple of chopped celery ribs and a whole large chopped onion. Cover with water and cook on low all day until the meat falls off the ham hocks. Pick out the bones and skin from the hock, then add salt, pepper and tabasco sauce to taste.

I don't even know what a ham hock is. lol. I'm assuming leg, or leg joint? When I make ham it's always the precooked boneless ones.

Invest in the cookbook "Fix It and Forget It".
Also, "A Potful of Recipes".
You can easily find the two cookbooks on eBay or Amazon.
Stress-free!
