So...Mu hubby and I got a prepaid credit card recently, but I'm really starting to wonder if it's worth it or not. Every month they charge us $4.94 just as a monthly charge. We didn't want to get a real credit card because we are already in debt and are trying to climb out of the hole before we create anymore. The prepaid credit card is handy...like when I have to get gas I don't have to worry about getting our babies out of the car and take them in to pay for it (it's pretty cold here right now and the less I have to get them into it the better). But I just don't know if that monthly fee is worth the convienance. We decided to close out our checking account because we had an unauthorized withdrawl from our account that put us overdrawn; and even though the company put the money back into our account, the bank was still charging us the overdraft fee (even though we didn't authorize the withdrawl in the first place and it should prove it when the money was credited back to our account). A few days ago when we got our income tax money back we opened up another checking account (at a different bank of course) but it will be a while before we get our debit cards in. My question to all of you is do you have a prepaid credit card and do you think that fee is worth it? Do you think I should close it and just wait for my debit card (which would have the same convienances as the prepaid credit card for us)? Or should I wait til the debit card comes in and then close it? Your advice is much appreciated!

That is weird that a prepaid card is charging you a monthly fee. I could see if it was a regular credit card, but a prepaid one? That would almost be like getting a gift card for someone and them getting charged every month. I would close it if it were me and wait for the debit cards to come in. There is no reason why they should be charging you. Is there a number you can call or anything?

I've gone on the website as well as called the 1 800 number. I thought it sounded a little rediculus but I had never nad one and wasn't sure if this was the norm or not. thanks for responding!

If you've already opened the account at the bank then your cards should be in the mail any day. If it were me, I'd get rid of the other card. I can't imagine paying a fee to use such a card or anything similar.

I don't have a prepaid card that I use regularly. I have one that a got from a GPT site that had some money on it. I would never use the card all the time because of the fees. I hate fees - to the point where I refuse to upgrade my checking account. Personally, I would wait until your debit card got there and close that prepaid card. It should not be long usually less than 5 business days before you get your card. In the meantime, your bank should have issued an ATM card.
