I recently gave birth to my beautiful daughter on the 4th of March. I had alot of complications and my hemoglobin blood levels went down to a low level of 63. I had to have a blood transfusion - 4 litres of blood, it took 16 hours. I am so grateful to people that have donated blood as I might not have made it I was as white as a ghost before the transfusion. I was scared of getting the transfusion as I did not like the idea of getting someone elses blood in me. But thank god, there are generous people out there. How do you feel about blood donations and transfusions? I know now I will donate blood in near future and hopefully save someone elses life!!

I've donated probably half a dozen times and plan on doing it again soon. I love knowing that each pint of blood I donate can help up to 3 people!

I'm not sure all people know that one pint saves up to 3 lives.

I underwent the same experience when I gave birth to my number 4 girl. I rememembered that I lost a lot of blood, was shivering terribly and extremely weak. Doctors gave me 3 litres of blood. The transfusion was painful as blood is thicker than water. To think of it now, I am grateful to the person who donated the blood, cause mine is quite rare to find, blood type O-. My father donates blood regularly cause he works in a hospital. Maybe I should try asking him about blood donation.

I know what you mean I am also type O- so was extremely grateful that they had my type and saved my life. I had bleeding diverticulitis and was close to dying from lack of blood so thanks to all those kind people who donate blood.

Hi x7heavens, yes it is very painful being hooked up to machine for hours. But we are very lucky someone donated blood, you are lucky with blood type o. I think it would be great to donate in the future I have not done so yet, but maybe in a year when I am all healthy I can return the favour. Thanks for your response. :))

Congratulations!!! And you are here already??Wow!!
And now back to your question.
I have donated blood during some of my college drives...and once for a relative.
I know it's good and save someone's life...but I've never really thought beyond that.

I've tried to donate several times, but have only been able to once because my iron was always too low. I haven't tried lately because I'm not sure if it's ok for me to with my PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease), been meaning to ask my nephrologist.
My husband was a regular blood donor and was quite proud of it. Was hoping to reach a gallon soon. But unfortunately he ended up getting a couple of blood clots and is now on blood thinner probably for the rest of his life.
I am very thankful to those who do donate. The year I went into the hospital for 2 weeks I was so weak I could hardly walk even with assistance. Turns out I was septic. The infection had gotten into my blood stream and had made me severely dehydrated as well as weak, feverish and having fits of severe chills. It was not fun! They gave me blood then, to get some clean blood into me fast. Thank you blood donors!

THanks for your response, you are a very generous person for donating, you would have saved many people's lives, you should feel proud. Sorry to hear about your kidney disease, even with that you still have a big heart and want to donate. :))

i would love to be able to donate blood, but unfortunately i cannot. my veins are too small, and they tend to collapse very easily. when i go for just a simple blood test it's a process than can sometimes include lengths of iv tube, and usually it is a struggle to just get a couple of tubes of blood. i have a friend who donates on a regular basis. he now donates platelets instead of just blood.

I have never donated blood. Because of my weight they would never let me. I am now just about the right weight though and wouldnt mind donating blood. I feel ok about it. I was always iffy for having someone elses blood in me but then again im sure people make sure its top quality.

Yes I was assured by the hospital staff that the blood is fully screened and tested, i guess there is not much choice if you don't take blood when you need it could become ill or even die. So I am glad I decided to have transfusion. It is great how you want to donate blood, I think it is the best thing someone could do. Thanks for your response. :)

I donated blood on my birthday and nobody seems to care about it. Normally, on birthdays, people will give presents to me however, I give my blood to someone who needs it. So, I guess it is a great action to be done.

In fact, nobody cares about my birthday because I was in the army and the officers tries to push everybody to donate blood so I am one of those being pushed to donate blood.

I have given blood a total of three times in all my life, but that was many years ago when I was much younger. Now I don't practice doing it, but should there be an emergency, I am prepared to volunteer my blood if there's a need. Some people are scared of donating blood maybe because of the needle or the sight of seeing blood, but I am not given my previous experience.

Yes I think alot of people are scared of giving blood as they don't like needles. I always try to look away when getting a needle, what I can't see won't hurt me, is my theory. I thought I would be freaked out by seeing the blood too but I got used to it. Good to hear that you have saved people's lives by donating blood, you should be proud. :))

I thought I hadnt seen you about for a few days! Congratulations, hope you are feeling better after your transfusion. On the subject of giving blood I tried to give blood once before, but I have a rare blood type and so they wouldnt let me. Just lately though I have seen that the transfusion van is visiting this area and so I may just try again as it was a few years ago and things might have changed.

Hey geminrose, yes I am back good to be back and feeling well I was a mess these past few days. Amazing how good 4 litres of blood can pick me back up. Hope you can donate blood, especially if u do have rare blood type that means they would need your blood type more. Can't understand why they won't let you donate, does not make sense.

I don't think it sounds funny we all have our fears and phobias. What is funny is that I have phobia of fish, I can't go anywhere near them or i freak out. Thanks for your response. You can help others in other ways.

Hello kiran1978,
I feel, out of all donations we make, blood donation is the best donation because it helps some one to live. But as ladies we have to be little careful as we undergo menstrual cycles, so we have to check for our heamoglobin levels as frequently as possible. While donating blood this has to be taken in to consideration.
I have donated blood once, that too to my sister who was undergoing cancerous thyroid operation that time.If a need comes I wish to donate blood.
I wish you and your newborn baby a healthy and prosperous life.
All the best.

Yes, I have donated once and I will donate again. We are a group of friends who studied in the same school. The three of us is the most seniors and the other in their late 20's. One of our friend will be operated for her heart disease and needs blood donations. The five members of the group all offered to donate and so there was medical examination done amongst us. The irony of it is that I am the most senior and the only one approved to give donations. They all laugh at me and told me I am the one in good health. I feel nothing bad when blood was taken from me. One full bag of blood was taken from me or about 450cc of blood. Right now, I am ready to donate blood to those who are in need.

Hey Mr pippo, the day finally arrived, she is really cute we called her Shanae. We decided the name 5 hours after she was born, we both agreed straight away. Funny how things work, for 9 months we could not think of a name but after she was born the name just popped into my head. Hopefully you can donate blood, such a good deed, I intend on doing that once my iron levels are high for a while. :))

I used to think I would not like to receive someone else's blood but changed my mind when I got sick and was bleeding badly from diverticulitis. already anemic I had lost so much blood that I had to have four litres of blood also and was in the hospital for five days . Thosedonations saved my life as I was close to passing away from loss of blood. so thank God for people whodonate and I wish I could but I have had hepatitis so cannot donate blood.

Which is the reason they told you that you can not donate your blood because you are anemic or because you have low blood pressure?

Firstly I will congratulate you on getting baby. You must take care of you and baby. Because low haemoglobin make you in trouble. You must take proper food and do some light exercise like walking. Take some medical advice if needed. Do not take it lightly because you have to take care yourself and your daughter..
I always donate my blood two times in year. That is definetly going help others..
