hi Lace. Welcome to mylot. I think 15-20 minutes at a go is enough and expected for a 3yr old. Their attention span is very short and since they do not yet understand the meaning of school and discipline, you cannot make them sit at one place for long. I think you should let your child get up and play whenever he wants, otherwise he would develop a fear for studies, which would boomerang in his later stages of school. You can again sit with him maybe after 3 or 4 hrs or better still you can sit with him in the morning, then again in the afternoon (if you are staying at home, you can lie with him and read picture alphabets together) and maybe again in the evening. But you have to do it continuously so that even he get habituated to it.

Agreeing with Sudi..Your child is 3.Learning is an every day every thing experience, especially at this age. As Child Group Worker, DSW, but mostly a Mum I have learnt a lot about teaching methods & how we all learn. Any one is going to learn a lot more easily & natutally when they enjoy the 'subject'. When we first begin to 'read' it's begins with regognition of word patterns as they look on paper. Not so much the word structure. As far as the reading goes, this is what I fund has worked well for me & my boys. I read to them every night in bed. They both had their favorite stories, and books. As I read I would run my fingers under the words. As my boy's heard the stories and looked at the pictures, they knew the stories backwards! (Just try & skip a page when your tired!!LOL) As time went on, they would run their fingers along with mine. This, without them knowing it was imprinting the sounds with the way the words 'looked'. Sometimes I would 'forget' where I was up to, and ask them to tell/ show me. Then I would say the word whilst pointing to it. I always used books with large print, and interesting pic's & colours, repeated simple words. As far as writing, at 3 a child does not have the fine motor skills for this BUT, in every day playing and interactions, they are developing this & so many more skills. By stacking blocks, pouring water from one container into another, falling over when they run to fast .... Don't be in a rush or worry that your child is not going to be 'up there' at the top of the grade. Take the oportunity to enjoy every minute. For eveything they do each day, even if it's sitting under a tree and watching the sun and clouds through the leaves, is an experience for yor child, and a wonderful memory for you both. P,L,&MBs

One of the things that my care giver and I are trying with my son is having him repeat the words in the book as we say them. we say the word as we point to it then he says it. he's only 2 so it's just starting to sink in.

Ayannali, has is right! Every little bit helps and with with encouragement comes confidence. It was a natural progression for the boys to ask what a word was & to 'read' along with me. Sometimes though, you just read for the sake of the time spent together.

I think that for his age 10-20 minutes is wonderful! I myself have a 2 1/2 yr old boy, a 1 1/2 yr old girl and an 8 month old boy. I bought one of those Leap Pad Leapsters for my oldest. It teaches them counting and other things in a fun way. He usually plays about 10 minutes here and there througout the day, so the time he spends learning really adds up!

word box - a word box makes teaching spelling and writing more fun
We always associate writing with pen and paper but of course there are multiple ways to learn to write. For example if you were at the beach you can scribble in the sand with your fingers or with a twig. You can also use crayons and use different colors for each letter to make it colorful and therefore look more attractive to kids. Also you can try word boxes as in the picture.

How I did mine was make flash cards, with the ABC's on them, we would go over them until she knew what they were by herself. Then we went into numbers which was alot easier. Start little, with words like Dog,cat,he,she,A,I, etc. It will not take long. Read at nite to them. That helps out alot. GOOD LUCK, ya that get bored with it. but make it fun for them.

we could not force 3 years kid just to read and write. i thing we could start by playing games accompanied by picture cards or song. it would be great then. in a day, we can just show an alphabet and one thing represented that alphabet. in the next day, we review and give a new thing to the kids. for all, to make them happy to learn we have to make the happy learning also.

you must give them the fix time for playing and then you must fix the time for the study

It is normal for your 3 year old to have short attention span. I believe at this age they appreciate more pictures rather than reading letters and counting numbers. At this time also thet only scribble and not ready to write. Though you can still give him pencil and paper. They usually imitate what you say or do. So perhaps we shpold be a very good model for them at this time.

find out what he wants because it is useless if you keep on pushing on one thing.. give other choices for him to explore which is more fun and at the same time he is learning.Kids are inconsistent.. they want 3-4 varieties of style when it comes to play.
