Ethics of keeping children safe on social networking sites

How far would you go to keep your children safe on sites like bebo and Youtube? Do ethics come into it or is all fair when it comes to protecting our children? Would you ever, like me, sign up on bebo and pose as someone else to find out how your daughter would respond to an approach from a stranger? Is that ethical or not? Would you do the same or never do such a thing? In my case, I only kept up the subterfuge a short while, finaly revealing myself with the message "You need to be careful who you befriend online, piglet (my pet name for her), you never know who they actually are, they could even BE YOUR DAD! Spooky". All was well, she thought it was funny and I was reassured that she wasn't going to send photos or get drawn in to improper conversations, but I realise some kids would really react to such an act. So what would you do? Is it just too outrageous? I think the internet is a dangerous place but would rather educate my kids to its dangers than try to exclude them from it. What is your limit?

Whilst I commend you for being a responsible father and checking out what your daughter is doing online, I think you could put yourself in danger by posing as someone else on a social network site. You only communicated with your daughter but your ploy could have been misinterpreted by your daughter or someone else who could have suspected it was a man approaching a young girl for other reasons. It may have taught your daughter a good lesson but please do not put yourself at risk of prosecution.

Wow, I'm really surprised this one has had only 1 response. Maybe I needed a better heading to catch peoples attention or something. I thought there would be a few comments one way or the other. What do you think? Is it the title, the keywords or the subject that is failing to catch the imagination?

I don't know Jim. I thought it was a good title. I don't even have parenting in my interests. Perhaps that is the answer. Start discussions in the bigger interest groups like life, people, Q&A perhaps?

Your probably right. I'm not even sure which category this is in right now, could be "Places I'd like to go to" and I wouldn't know it. Hey wow, you've got a star with 9 on it already, you dont hang about. See you around.
