Driving while listening to someone speak can drain a third of the brain's activity. Scientists at the Carnegie Millon University in the US have found that just listening to sentences degrades the driving process, with a 37 percent decrease in activity in an area of brain that is crucial for driving. Drivers need to keep not only their hands on the wheel but also have to keep their brains on the road. The scientists used magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)scans to assess the brain activity of volunteers who used a driving simulator to steer a car along a virtual winding road at different speeds. They steered their cars undisturbed first, but then listened to a set of factual sentences and marked them true or false. The scans called functional MRI,help identify the most active regions of the brain during specific tasks and have become an important tool to decipher brain functions. Studies by other researchers conducted over the past decade have shown that simulated driving performance is disrupted by conversations, even whey they involve hands free devices. But the Carnegie experiments are the first to show that driving while listening led to a 37 percent drop in activity in the brain's parietal lobe, a region that displays a crucial role while driving. The study found that drivers who were listening to the sentences moved out of lanes more often or hit a simulated guard rail on the side or deviated from the center of the road.
The implication is that engaging in a demanding conversation could jeopardise the judgement and reaction time if an unusual driving situation arise. The taks of understanding sentences and driving are processed by different networks of cells within the brain.Yet the study found that attempting both at the same time caused a degradation of driving, brought about by the processing of sentences. The new findings suggest that other tasks requiring speech processing by the brain, such as conversing with a passenger or listening to a talk on the radio may also degrade driving performance.
Based on the above facts do you justify the usage of mobile phones while driving???????

I have never heard of this study. However, I have found from experience that talking on the cell phone and driving really do not mix. I have also seen studies that say todays generation of teens are text messaging while driving and that is dangerous as well. The cell phones were originally created to help people when they were in an emergency situation. However, phones are nowing being used to just talk to family and friends about all kinds of BS.
I was in the car and my brother was driving. He was talking to a friend of his about something and they started to argue. I found that my brother started driving much faster as the arguement got louder. Since I was a passenger I asked him to hang up however, the discussion continued and my brothers driving became more dangerous. I actually had to take the phone out of his hand and hang it up for him. He is no longer allowed to talk on a cell phone when I am with him in the car.
I also have been driving and had people cut me off that were on their cell phone. I feel that talking and holding a coherent discussion requires thought. This thought however, should be on driving and changing lane with care. There are tons of accidents because people can not talk and drive at the same time. Both of these things take concentration.
I have a cell phone. I do not talk on the phone and drive unless it is extremely needed. I like to pull off the road and talk and then move on. I have however, need directions and had the phone in my hand looking for a street. I was not comfortable doing this but at the time it was very needed.
These are all first hand experiences with cell phones and driving. I am sure there are more than one study to prove that cell phones and driving do not mix. People already do things they should not while driving and the talking on the phone is just another. I have seen people shave while driving and put makeup on while driving. I even had to honk my horn at a driver who decided to read the paper at a red light. Driving is sereous and you need to have your wits about you at all times.
Drive careful.
