If it was required for you to live would you do it?I saw a patient yesterday who refused to remove his leg.He preferred to die with the disease rather than lose his leg.

I would get my leg amputated. UNLESS I was, say, guaranteed to die, and the amputation would only extend my life by another month or so. In which case I wouldn't do it, since that equipment and funding could be used for someone else, who may be able to survive for much longer.

It would very much be a individual (Adult)decision, perhaps the gentelman in question has hope,or faiith that he will not die of the disease.I can imagine the horror of his thoughts, not easy at all for him.I do feel it is his descision as an adult. As for myself...I in all honesty do not know how I would handle the situation.

If I was very elderly then no, I would not have it taken off just because I would not have much longer anyway. Now if it was today and I'm only 19 then yeah I would have it done. They make all sorts of things theses days to help people who lose a limb. Going around with a fake leg would not be that bad I guess. Granted I hope I never have to have that happen. But if you are older and already have problems then why make things even worse for yourself. Heck if the person was old enough he might not even be able to learn to use a fake leg and would be stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of his days. Nobody wants that because you have to depend on others for help a great deal of the time. My mother-in-law about lost her leg and was in a wheelchair for over a year. She tells me stories of how bad she hated it because she could not do anything. She had to have help to get into her clothes, bed, bathroom shower and everything.

Hello r1mp2ge, I feel it is more meaningless to die than go for amputation. If one has to live with amputation - they have to live. I can understand the feeling of the person, but one must always keep in rememberence that one can live and do challenging tasks even with disabilities if one possess a strong will. All the best.
