I think 5 is an average number anything more then that its way to much. After that they just keep building and building. When I moved to MO when I was 10 my Aunt had like 3-4 cats. My male cat ended up getting her cat pregnant and for 3 years it just kept breeding and breeding. When we moved back to NY, she had over 200 cats. It just got crazy. And I learned from that to just have a couple and to have them fixed. I have a few friends that started out with 2, 1 now has 12 and the other has like 15.

It is not just the number of cats you have; it is the whole attitude. Do you walk around in shirt saying that "My cat is more likable than most people I know?" Do you talk more about your cats than your boyfriend and kids? Do you blog about your cat? Have you posted more than a dozen pictures of your cat on the internet?
One cat with the attitude of "My sweet kitty boy" is enough to get you the label of "Crazy Cat Person." And yes, I am speaking from personal experience. *wink*
