I think there is a huge difference between abuse and spanking.

when my kids were little i asked the pediatrician this question. he told me that under certain circumstances it was neccessary and not abuse. He said if your child runs out in a parking lot for example and he had been told not to do that, it is important to give them a swat in the rear and make sure they remember not to do that again becasue next time you may not get a chance to make them understand. It did work for me and I only had to spank once in a while but it taught them there are things that were not an option, like thier safety.

I think that it is ok as long as you keep it age appropriate. Spare the rod and spoil the child! My kids don't listen if I just take their favorite toy away. But I don't spank them instead they have to stand in the corner with their arms up until they start crying because their arms hurt. Or do 100 jumping jacks, push-ups, do laps around the yard. If that dosen't work then they repeat it until it does! This seems to be working for my kids. ;@)
