What kinds of dogs did you have most in your life and why?

Mutts followed by Samoyed Huskies. Mutts because people seem to have too many of them and need to give them away. Pure breds and designer breeds cost lots of money. We'd rather use that money on rabie shots, deworming, and regular medical check ups. Samoyed Huskies because people leave the North and go down South so they would give us their Sammies.
Right now I have a cat, but with all the people leaving up here to find jobs elsewhere, I'm surprised we don't have a people asking us to take a dog.

I only had 2 jackrusstle terriers (or however you spell that) but ya, they were cool. I'd spent sooo much money on them with vets and stuff lol.
I only had those two dogs, and no more, because I could not make time to handel any more animals of any kind, but the ones I had were fun.

Defeniatly mutts. We always rescued our dogs from shelters, and they are usaully always mutts. We did rescue 1 husky off the streets, and we got a purebred golden retriever as a gift. But other than those 2 we have only adopted mutts! GREAT dogs!

I knew you would be responding to this one!
Most of our mutts have been part lab and part German Shephard. Really smart, faithful, and fun. Plus like to go for rides in cars, boats and go swimming with us. Serious action dogs. My brother rescued a Golden lab/shepherd mix off the streets, came to him during the ice storm of 98 and was she ever sweet. He put signs up, did lost and found on the radio, newspaper, everything and no one claimed her. Take care and thanks

I look for all animal related discussions ;P
Most of our mutts were either lab mixes or shepherd mixes. The one we have right now is rottweiler/pitbull/shepherd mix (our guess =P)

That must be really interesting. What of each animal breed does your dog have? I love the coloring of pit bulls, the disposition of the Shepherds, and I don't know anything about Rotweilers. Take care

So do I, but I love learning about different dogs from their owners and some types of doga are bred to be different ways, plus there are many types of dogs I've never had and some people have had different experiences with different kinds of dogs. Thanks and take care

I choose not to have any pets at all. We travel a lot and I don't want to have to deal with worrying about what to do with an animal.
Growing up we always had dogs though and my mom continues to have them.
We had Dobermins, Rottweilers, Boxers, West Highland White Terriers, Collies and now my mom has a Jack Russell. She wants to get another big dog but my dad is against it. I know she will win out, but right now they just have the one small dog.
My husband really wants a dog but that is not going to happen anytime soon. I will be the one that will have to take care of it. Plus like I said, with his job we have to travel a lot.

I think that is a very good decision, if more people evaluated their ability to really and truly take care of an animal, fewer animals would end up neglected or abused or let go to die. Esp. around Easter time, lots of people buy live bunnies and live chicks when they don't want adult chickens or long term bunnies around. So you make an excellent point. I wish more people would consider how much they're actually home before they take on an animal.
Neat dogs, all kinds I've never had. Big range in size, too. What are they like temperment-wise?
Thank you very much for responding, your points are very important and I'm glad you contributed them.

Golden retrievers.... I love all dogs, all animals in fact, but my heart belongs to a golden retriever.

I have had a couple labs and one Dalmation, but I think that the next dog I get will come from the humane society. I have finally relaized that those are the dogs that are the most appreciative of your affection. all of my dogs have been great, don't get me wrong, but now that I am a little older and I realize that most of these animals don't have a chance if they are not adopted I feel the need to help them.

Lily of the Thorns will love your response and so do I.
I'm curious about Dalmations because I've never had any and just seen them from afar. What are they like disposition and care wise?
Thanks for a nice response and take care.

Dalmations are naturally very loyal and protective of their provider; however like most dogs that I have had experiences with it depends on how you raise them. I got my dalmation for my sixteenth birthday and I am now 30, so that tells you how long he has been with us. Most dalmations have an average life span of 7-9 years, he has exceeded this by a long shot. Anyways, when I first got him i was ecstatic, I had wanted a dalmation for years. I treated him like a little baby. He slept in the bed, under the covers with me and went everywhere I went. From that he became very loyal and protective, more than most dogs I have had. This was good and bad for obvious reasons. Overall my experience with my dalmation has been amazing. He is brilliant, great with those he is used to and not so great with those he does not know. He is loving, very loving. I would say that a dalmation is something to consider more than most dogs. If you are considering it is wise to look at your home life and lifestyle before getting one. Thanks for your inquiry, I was delighted to let you know about my experience with my dalmation.

Hi Calai, long time no hear from you.
People do need to take their situation into consideration before they get an animal, very good point to make, thanks and take care.

I have always had labador retrievers. first we had a female black lab, then a male black lab and then a chocolate lab. We still have the chocolate lab and we just got a yellow lab puppy. He is so cute! They both stay with my parents and I go to college far from home so I don't see them much. My parents always wanted purebreds when I get my own dog I won't care much whether they are pure bred as long as they are friendly!

We have had several types of dogs(Shepherds,Old English Sheep dogs, Boxers, Great Danes, and lots of mutts),some for short periods of time and some for long periods of time as we took in animals that no one wanted or could keep and we kept them until we found homes for them.
One dog we took in was a pregnant Great Dane and she blessed us with 19 beautiful pups, two of which we kept for our own after finding homes for the rest of them.
We not only had our share of dogs but also many other kinds of animals as well. I was an animal lover since I could walk and my daughter turned out to be one too. If it crawled, slithered, hopped, flew or moved by any means my daughter would bring it home to care for. We became very well know for taking in almost any kind of animal in need.

Wow! Sounds like your house was really, really cool. 19 puppies, wow! I'd have a heart attack and go broke. Glad you found homes for all of them. It amazes me all the people who help animals and there still more that need assistance. Take care
