My kids are gone for a few days, and I have decided that I don't want to cook. Instead, I'm paying someone else to do it for me. I just phoned up a local chinese food place, and ordered my favourite dishes that I can eat over the next few days.
Tonight's order includes spring rolls, chicken chop suey, vegetable lo mein, and sweet and sour chicken balls, minus the sweet and sour sauce (because I can't stand it lol).
It will be here in about 45 minutes... and I'm looking forward to it. It's been many many months since I last ate some chinese food. I think last summer was the last time I ordered some. Sadly, it was the exact same order as this time. I'm not too keen on trying something new right now. I'll wait until I am out at a buffet to taste test some new dishes.
What about you? What are some of your favourite chinese food dishes? Do you make them yourself? Do you order in? Do you eat chinese food often? Do you have any chinese food related stories to share? Do you eat only at chinese food buffet restaurants? Have you ever been to China?

Go on torture us. "I'm having a chinese". I am envious. Our local chinese serves the most unpleasant food that I think that I have ever had other than Burritos (mush in a a collapsible bag). The freezer's full of Alsatians (sorry Rintintin) and they put a healthy slick of oil in all their fried stuff. Now the best resturant in town does the most marvelous seafood banquet. You order an hour before you arrive and they bring you the most alarming amount of food. Delish. They also make rotten jokes about sick squid as in this meal of squid will cost you "Sicksquid" (£6). Years ago I used to go to a Chinese restaurant in Soho (London) where if you were two or less (i.e. on your own or not so loved up that you needed to sit at a table whispering sweet nothings all night long) they sat you at a huge communal round table and for a set price you ate whatever they brought. Whole carp fish, half a pig, so may chickens that you thought you were on a farm. The food was wonderful, and not expensive. Most of your neighbors on this table were chinese too, so if it's good enough for them........
I've never been to China but my dad spent years doing business out there, even before it was compulsory to have Chinese contracts. They regularly had Chinese contacts back to stay with them (this was when relations with China were starting to thaw somewhat). About 6 years ago my wife and I were invited to my parents to a Chinese dinner. There were two cooks in Mum's kitchen (she was not a happy bunny. She hates other people cooking in her kitchen) and they cooked dumpling for the first course. Now we like dumpling so that went down very well. Then they sent some more dumpling out, and then some more and then some more, until we realised that this was the totality of the meal. Dumpling. I've never had one since. Of course we were all very polite and thanked them. But ooooh, talk about sick of the sight of something. Anyway it must be close to door bell ringing time. Enjoy.

I'm chewing on a chicken ball as I type this. YUM!
Something isn't quite right with the food though. It's as though they missed some ingredients, like certain spices or something. It's not as tasty as it should be. Rather bland in fact. :(

I'm trying to decide if what it needs is some soy sauce. I was given some packets of the stuff. I've never added soy sauce to anything before. I don't know if that's the missing ingredient! EEK!

I think it is great. and I really like the taste of it.

We eat chinese food often, my favourite is the beef fried rice, and hubby's is the chicken balls WITH the sauce lol. so we usually just get those two dishes.
We sometimes get japanese food too, but the only thing we order is the chicken chow mein. its soo good, its got lots of rice noodles instead of just the bean sprouts like chinese chow mein has.
I wish i could make chinese food, it'd be cheaper then ordering it! I have been to a few buffets, but i perfer not to eat there.. all those people hovering over the food before you take yours kind amakes me paranoid about who did what on it last. . And i've never been to china! That's be a really long flight!

I don't think I've ever had Japanese food before. Ewww... the sauce! I can't handle the sauce!!! I've never even considered making my own chinese food. It seems like it would be too much work, and I'm a minimalist when it comes to cooking. lol.

Mmmmmmm! That sounds so good. I love ordering a whole bunch of different chinese dishes when I have a weekend alone. I like to start off with potstickers(steamed dumplings), then wonton soup, and I order the schezuan chicken as spicy as they can make it. I like to get some vegetable fried rice too just to eat by itself. There's nothing better than having a nice peaceful night to lounge around and eat some good food that you don't have to worry about cleaning up the kitchen afterwards. Hope you enjoy your supper.

I absolutely love chinese food, I dont tend to make any at home on a regular basis, maybe once in a while when the mood takes me. But I love having from a takeaway, sweet and sour is my favourite dish, but when I get fed up of it I always try something different. I love the ribs, in plum sauce or sweet and sour, and king prawn toasts. I have never been to a buffet yet, we keep saying we will go one day but as yet we have not got around to it. I really want a chinese takeaway now reading this its made me hungry! Hope yours was worth waiting for when you had it.

I have not been to China.
I love Chinese take-out though! Our favorite is General Tso's chicken. We try it in almost every city we travel to. It is very good at our local place here in South Jersey but we haven't found one to beat a place in Dallas! And of course we lost the menu during the travels so we will probably never find it again! :)
We have also eaten it in Albuquerque NM, New Orleans LA, Baltimore MD, Biloxi MS and many other places.
For us, we like it to be somewhat spicy and not overly sweet. Sometimes it is just too sweet.

I like Chinese food, in fact, many of our dishes here in the Philippines have some influence of Chinese cooking and it's been part of our daily lives as well as celebrations.

We eat alot of Chinese food, since my husband is Chinese. My favorite is Chicken Rice, which is plain boiled chicken and white rice cooked with ginger and sesame oil. It's very easy. When we go out for a meal it's almost always Chinese, although every now and then we get a craving for Mexican food and go out for that. Once and a while I need a plain old American hamburger too!
We have not been to China, although his mom is trying to talk us into going there with her this summer. I doubt that's in the budget though - unless she pays.... which is doubtful!

I love Chinese food, sadly my sweetie does not and it has been almost a year since I have been to a decent Chinese buffet. But when I order from my favorite little restaurant for take out I always get the same thing....Roast pork, shrimp, beef, and chicken, mixed with snow peas, broccoli, carrots, and water chestnuts tossed in a light garlic sauce. Which I eat over a bed of steamed white rice.
When I lived in Maryland there was a Japanese steak house that I would go to once a week when I was pregnant with my 2nd child. I would order the beef teriyaki, sesame salad, and 2 japanese bagels. (a japanese bagel is a sushi roll that has cream cheese, and cucumber inside of it and smoked salmon draped over the top of it)
If it wasn't 4 hours away from me now I would drive there for lunch.
And thank you for making me want sushi for breakfast :P

From a few of the responses I've read on this thread, I think the foods vary in taste and composition from country to country.

I am not trying to be bias because I am chinese, but I do have to say that of all the cuisine I've eaten, chinese foods are the most delicious and their cuisine are something you won't get tired easily if you eat over and over again everyday. They put unique herbs and spices on them that really satisfies my taste buds.
I really suggest going to China or even Hong Kong perhaps... their food there taste really fresh and delicious.

I've got a story to share,it's about a kind of porridge cooked with 8 kind of grain such as peanut and been,it's called "La Ba Zhou" in Chinese.
It is said that when Zhu Yuanzhang(the first king of Ming Dynasty) was young,he lived a poor life. One day he's very hungry, and don't have nothing to eat, then he collect all the food he can find in his kitchen and cook them into a bowl of porridge. To his surprise, this kind of mixed porridge is really delicious. At last it become a famous delicous dish in China.
Many Chinese food have their realted stories, that's one part of the Chinese culture.Welcome to China! This is a beautiful and friendly country.
