where do you advertise?

I am a freelance Web Designer just starting out and I am not an expert on where to advertise for my services. Do you know of some websites to advertise that really work? I am having trouble finding clients to fill my portfolio. So far I have tried myspace.com and craigslist.org. Is there more? Please help me out if you can..thank you!
