DIXIE CHICKS. DO YOU LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM.

As far as I'm concerned I absolutely love their music. But I was so broken over their announcement about Bush to another country. I felt betrayed. Feel we should keep the appearance of a united front even if we don't care for the president in office. Did they ever say "I'm sorry"? How do you feel about this?

The Dixie Chicks are a good group making good music. They are also people who are entitled to their opinions - and do not belong to the gum-chewing, vacant-smiles brigade. I respect them!I don't know about a 'united front'. It seems to me that there are quite a few Americans who don't mind voicing their opinions about Bush. He is not overly popular in the UK, either, along with his pocket-buddy Blair!Let's not get into politics, though! I respect anyone for voicing a seriously held opinion ... I make my own judgement on whether it should influence mine!

I do tend to agree with you that a concert was perhaps not the place to make an off the cuff political statement, apparently a propos of nothing! It did the Chicks a lot of harm financially, I believe, so I don't suppose their agent was best pleased!
I looked at some of the news items again (it was over three years ago) and it seems that it was a spontaneous remark that backfired. Natalie Maines did issue an apology on March 14: "As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American."
It seems to me that people very often make ill-advised statements off the cuff. It's unfortunate (but not unusual) that popular musicians are no less prone to do so than anyone else! In the words of one of their songs:
She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
My feeling is that it was a comment that blew up a far bigger storm than was intended. I can see that it was hurtful to you and to many Americans. I can assure you that, outside America, it was given much less importance and didn't damage relations between Britain, for example, and America!

Thanks for researching, very kind of you. Most important, she did apologize. Who would we be if we didn't forgive. I think you just concluded this problem for me. Thank you for everything.

This is a hard one with you, but we are friends, so I feel I can be honest. I whole heartedly agree all have a right to their opinion, but it was the where and when that got me. This was a music concert, right? Not a Bush bashing concert. Let's face it, they know how it is over there, and I think it's possible they were using this popular opinion to their advantage. Whether to endear the fans to them or to promote the Democratic cause back here. I'm Independent, not Republican nor Democrat. With me, it's about the issues not the party. It definitely blew up in there face. There were alot of American fans upset here. On both sides. Seems to be the trend now, using the stage as a political front. It would be like Elton John coming here and bashing Queen Elizabeth II. Again, I would be so disappointed. Thanks for you honesty.

I can't stand them. THey have a right to say whatever they want and I have the right to no longer listen to thier music. I didn't like that they said it, and no they haven't said they were sorry, but it is more thier actions sense then that has turned me off. They wouldn't like me to buy their cd's anyway they would be put into my cd changer with toby and reba.

You know what's funny is that I was almost ready to listen to them again when they came out with this album, it's like they didn't want the controversy to die down, it's much the same as actors, any press is good press? They livened it up again and have aggravated things even more, Natalie even talked a little trash about her hometown, and that is the definition of stupid right there.

Thanks for your opinion. I'm really straddling the fence here. I like their music, but not their tactics. I guess I just really have to decide which is more important to me.

If they had been in any other kind of music, what they said would've been fine. As a Country singing group, they couldn't have done anything more stupid. Most Country music fans really don't like or appreciate pissy liberal attitudes. If you want to earn their respect as a musician, it's really best to keep your personal opinion to yourself when it comes to God and country. I love their music and think they are extremely talented, but I really don't want to listen to them any more.

I'm pretty sure this is where I'm going with this. I just needed to hear someone else say it. Thanks for answering.

i think they should have their own opinions and should be able to express them as they wish just like anyone else. i never really cared for their music until i heard their new song. i don't know the name but it's the one where they say i'm not ready to make nice, i'm not ready to back down, i'm still mad as hell and...something something something...

I respect how you feel. Just like that song (almost "in your face" type song that makes me question the character of these girls. They made the comment with Barbara Walters, "Hey, we're not politicians". I was wondering why they were campaigning in England then. Thanks for answering.

I'm not sure if they did or not either. I started off not listening to their music but I'm slowly drawing back in. Thanks for answering.

I think it's all good, they're talented and I love their music.
That being said, I think a lot of times entertainers forget that they are just that - entertainment, for most of us anyway, if we want to know their political views, well then we'll ask won't we?
But Texas girls are mouthy by nature and I should know:)
