Does Anyone think The Pirates of the Caribean movies were overrated?

Is it just me? When it first came out it got so much kudus so I thought it must be good so I might as well check it out. Went and saw and I must say I was not impressed. I didn't laugh nor did I think the story was anywhere near engaging. Objectively I could appreciate Johnny Depp's character bu I just did not understand everyone fascination with the film. It was quite average to me. Safe to say I have not seen the other films as well. They just don't interest me,

I'd have to agree with you. Overrated. I remember it came out when I was still in school and all anyone could talk about was how good it was. Not a bad movie, but not great like many people say. And Johnny Depp is a great actor and everything, but I don't see how he got an oscar nomination that year for "Pirates", when other actors who gave better performances in better movies were not nominated (Tom Cruise in "The Last Samurai"; William H. Macy in "The Cooler").

I think the first film was a good film - entertaining with a good story line. The second and third ones though I don't think added much to the storyline - saying that I did go out and get all three on DVD for my wife
