I love a hard mattress for it's much better for my back however, hubby and I bought a king size pillow top mattress a few years ago and I hate it with such a passion!! It's way too soft even though it's hard under the pillow top. Sometimes I'll have to sleep on our old bed because it is a hard bed and is good for my back. If I had known better before we had bought it, trust me, it would've stayed at the store! lol The learning lessons, some are so expensive!
Do you have a pillow top mattress and if you do, do you like it? I hate ours!

If only I could give you mine!! You'd love it because of the pillow top which makes it feel so soft. It's way too soft for me even though it's firm under the pillow top but I can't feel the firmness in it.

Ahhhh someone like me!! Some day I'll be able to get a firm/hard mattress and get rid of this soft one. My back protests against it. I wish I had've known better before we bought it.

I must be an odd ball. lol I know everybody is different and it's all good but gosh I hate the pillow top and it seems more feel the same as you do so maybe I AM an odd ball? lol I'm like my mother in this respect, she likes a hard bed too. So we're both odd balls? LOL

I have back problems too cats and quite chronic ones! It is funny how different things suit different people as if I lie in a bed that is too hard I end up in more pain! Having said that if a bed is too soft it is just as bad! I have wanted a pillow top mattress for ages but they are too expensive so my physio advised me to try a duvet on top of my matress and below my sheet! It does make a difference! xxx

That's interesting. Sounds like the three bears beds, too hard, too soft, and just right! lol We have a mattress pad on our bed but it doesn't help one bit. That's ok, I'll sleep on the hard bed when I have to or when my back screams at me to. lol

I never like too soft mattresses which sink down when you lie on them. They can be bad for your back and give you back aches. On the other hand, I don't like very hard mattresses. If they are so hard that one feels no different from sleeping on a wooden bed without any mattress, I won't be able to sleep on such a mattress. I like mine firm, not soft but not too hard at the same time. I have been sleeping on the same pocketed spring mattress for many years, and it still feels great today. My mattress has been with me for 22 years now, so it is really value for money, cos it is still almost as good as new.

It may be wiser to sleep on mattress than on wooden or cement floor, something comfortable for your body. You can get strains on your neck, back or your hips sleeping on hard surfaces over prolong periods. If you don't get regular good night's sleep as a result, you can damage your health that way.

22 years? wow! You must really take good care of your things! That's wonderful! I agree with you, soft is just too soft but not too hard either because it is like sleeping on the hard floor or wood as you put it but firm is good. Mine is firm but with the pillow top it feels soft and doesn't agree with my back. Eventually we'll get another one but I don't know when. Only when money allows us to. lol

I don't like too soft mattresses too but I can lie down on wood or cement if I had to. I used to live in the yoga house as a worker and all I had between me and a cement floor was a thin woolen blanket. It doesn't make it easier that mosquitoes go to dinner when we go to bed. Cheers!!

Dehhhh-finitely a harder mattress.
A soft mattress makes me just way too comfortable, and sleepy, and just exhausted too! I find that I can't wake and get out of bed in those. I sleep too much. And I guess it feels like I need more hours in them, and much sleepier.
Harder ones are better for my body, and feel more healthily covered with hours of sleep. Also, i do NOT like squishy pillows. Same effects, I think.

Ohhhh we think so much alike!! I love my hard mattress that's in the other room and sleep in there when I have to meaning, when my back tells me to. Hubby doesn't mind the pillow top at all which is a good thing because at least it gets used instead of being wasted. I like hard pillows too or really stuffed that it'll stay upright instead of blowing air out of the thing and I'm being sufficated. lol

I don't like it too hard, but I do prefer a firm mattress to a soft one, because I too suffer from occasional back problems, especially when I don't sleep in a good position.
I have a lamb's wool fleece cover on my mattress however, like the one in the picture. This adds extra warmth and comfort whilst the mattress keeps you from getting back problems.
Brightest Blessings.

That looks nice and warm! But it may be a little too soft for me though. I hate having such back problems but such is life, right?

My bed needs to be very firm or my back will start giving me problems. You should try to use a two piece king size matress. The "Sleep Number," matresses seem like a good idea, but they are very expensive. What about putting a board under your side?

I don't think the board idea would work because the mattress is so thick. It's the pillow top part that bothers me so much. The mattress is firm but the pillow top makes it soft which I don't like. Thanks for trying!

I have a hard mattress with one of those memory foam pads on it.
Actually, I have also got 2 pillows cramed under the memory foam to raise the middle of my body so my shoulders are in a kind of grove. I think its saving me so far from having to have surgery on my left arm and keeping my right one from hurting as bad. Then there is the other pillow down by my feet so that I have that raised so my toes don't stick straight out and give me achillies tendon problems.
I'm just falling apart. Tho I've had the achillies tendon problem since the early 1980's.

Falling apart is just how I feel too ElicBxn. When I was younger, soooo long ago.... lol I didn't have nearly as many problems as I do now. Getting older and falling apart like we are is for the birds!! lol

My husband and I got one a few years ago ourselves. We were used to firm mattresses before this so when my husband and I were looking for a new mattress we figured a pillow top would be a good change. WRONG! It is too soft and uncomfortable to sleep on and it hurts both of our backs. Like you, had we known better we would have never gotten a pillow top! Fortunately our oldest son doesn't mind it so we gave it to him. That kid can sleep on anything! LOL

It's funny because some responses say theirs is hard even with the pillow top. I can't for the life of me see how that could be. I can't wait to get a new mattress... some day, God willing! lol

I have a queen size and I got it at HOM furniture about 4 years ago. I think we paid around $1,000 for it, maybe more, but I noticed the original Tempurpedic is now about $700. Still, it was worth the money!
Some people hate these beds, I personally hate the sleep number beds. It's different for everyone. I would just suggest trying out LOTS of mattresses before buying, because it is a huge investment and it really sucks when you get a bed you can't stand sleeping on!

Really?! Wow. That says a lot! Mind my asking how much did you pay for it and what size? Where did you get it? I'd like to check it out if you say it's that good....

I like a firm mattress. I am used to it and I don't like the feeling of sinking the way soft mattresses does.

Our mattress is a mixture of soft and hard, its so comfy it makes it very hard to get up of a morning! We have had it for a few years now and it is getting to the point where we are going to need a new one and we think we might try to get the same sort, of course it will be horrible until you get your body mold into it! I know that harder ones are better for our backs, but we are suckers for comfort, I will be whinging when I get older and have a bad back!

Hey if you like it, why bother getting a new one? lol I know I wouldn't change it if it suits me just fine. Like the old saying goes, if it's not broke, don't fix it. lol

Yes that is very true, but I want a new bed, maybe I can just get a new bed frame and hope that the mattress goes with it!

I have a pillow top mattress too. It's not soft though, it's one of those cheap imitation pillow tops so it's still hard enough to keep my back from getting stiff. What I really want is one of those mattresses that you can't even feel someone jumping on the bed. That would be perfect considering I have 2 small children!

That kind would help a great deal when having children but gosh, I can't imagine how much they cost though. Whew! I hate my pillow top with such a passion and wish we could get rid of it and get a new one but money is the issue as always. Some day maybe if we're ever so lucky! LOL

I couldn't agree more! I couldn't sleep on a soft mattress and if I did fall asleep, I'd wake up with such pain in my back

We have a hard bed/mattress. It is the Sealy Miracle Foam mattress and we love it. We also have the funny shaped miracle foam pillow but I need an extra pillow on it because if I do not, I will snore. My husband has back problems, and we had an ordinary hard mattress, but it started to sag as for the pillow top mattress, I probably would not want it for the extra expense. Oh we do not have that large of a master bed room so we have only a queen sized bed.

I'm hearing all kinds of GOOD things about the foam mattress. Maybe one day when we're rich enough (ha ha ha ha ha) we'll be able to get one. It would be nice to wake up without back pain.

Yup we're alike in that respect. I don't like hotel mattresses because I don't know when the sheets, blanket and spread have been washed last. Ewwwww. lol

I prefer hard mattresses as I too suffer from the same ailment as you.But we have a soft mattress in our master bedroom and thats because my wife prefers it. coming back to the back problem, I have seen that my back starts aching if I oversleep on a particular day, otherwise its fine.

Hi punkpro! Welcome to mylot!! Hope you enjoy it here and make lots of new friends!
I agree with you, the hard mattresses are the best. I have to sleep in the spare bedroom from time to time to get some relief. Hubby understands and is ok with it.

Hi Sara! Welcome to mylot! Hope you enjoy your time here! I love to sleep on our love seat when the recliner on both ends are open. Something about it is so comfortable! lol We're a bit strange, aren't we? At least we don't get hit with springs or wake up with a back ache. lol
