In New Zealand swimming is a compulsory school subject. Perhaps this is because we are a country with many lakes and rivers and with the longest coastline in proportion to our landmass in the world. Is it common to be taught swimming at school in other countries?

I didn't know this thing, but I believe it is really a good idea! other countries should do it!

I don't know how to swim either. When I was little my baby sitter took me, my brother and some of our friends to a pool and she accidently nearly drowned me. I was holding on to the side of the pool towards the deep end and she thought I was one of the other kids and pulled me under. I almost didn't make it. After that it took a while for me to even get near a pool. I was only 4 years old at the time... Kinda screwed me up ...when it came to wanting to learn to swin...LOL.

I didn't have any formal lessons but i know how to swim a little. I can float, do freestyle and a bit backstroke. Although, I have always been scared of deep waters so i haven't really tried swimming out into deep waters.

I can swim. I grew up on an island and spent a lot of time on a boat so as soon as I could walk I was thrown in a pool and taught to swim. i love to swim but don't get much of a chance these days. It is a great thing to know how to do, you should learn maybe.

Unfortunately, no... And to think that I was an Outdoorsman Scout during primary school. That's the reason why I don't enjoy beaches and swimming trips at all. I don't even want to ride a boat because of the fear of getting drowned or something.

It is very bad has this fear...

I've known how to swim ever since I was very little. My grandparents used to live near to the beach so we always used to go down and play in the water. At primary school from about grade 1 or 2 we had lessons every year. And my parents got my brothers and I to have private lessons after school to teach us different swimming strokes etc. We also did VacSwim, which is a vacation swimming program for young children all the way through to late teens to teach swimming technique and water safety. Water safety is a big thing thing in Australia as we have so many beaches.
