Do you cut your child's hair yourself

Or take them to a salon? I have been taking my son to a salon. They do a good job, but it is so expensive. My son's hair grows so fast that I've had to take him every 2 or 3 months. He is only 17 months old, and he's had 4 haircuts.
I've been thinking about doing it myself, but I'm nervous about it. For those who do it at home- how do you do it? Does it come out ok? Am I better off just taking him to the salon?

My youngest has never had a haircut. (she will be 2 in June) and as for my oldest, well I can't remember when it was exactly but I think she would have been at least 3 before she had enough hair to cut! I did the first few myself as she was to shy to sit in the hairdressers chair. Even now she only gets it cut once a year at the hairdressers. I will trim her fringe if needed
I reckon you should give it a go yourself, it seems to grow back fast enough!

Whoops forgot to say how I convinced my girl to stay still...
Bribed her with chocolate. Sat her up somewhere high where I could walk all around her. I also found getting someone to look at her at keep her focus was helpful but make sure they don't make him laugh to much!
Good luck, I am so sure this is within your capabilities!

Ok, the BR is for the tricks to keep him still! He does well at the salon, but at home it would be different. I think I'll give it a try. At least if I mess it up I know it will grow back quickly!

Dear Sillychick,
I used to cut my hair when I was in college I used to grow my hair so only less part I used to cut myself. Regarding children, my sister's hair is cut by sister by herself. Her son is 2 and a half years old, as she told it is bit difficult make him sit for half hour for hair cut.

now that is something that I have never been brave enough to try... cutting my own hair. was it difficult to muster up the courage the first time?
I watched on a show once, I think it was Judging Amy... where Tyne Daily(sp)'s character cut off her long long hair - she just chopped off her pony tail and kept at it - it was such a becoming cut, but I did not know if it was really done by that method or if the studio hair dressers touched it up a LOT! so I have been too nervous to try.

I don't think my son (15) ever went to a hair salon to get his hair cut. My first daughter (14) used to have her hair cut by me when she was younger but she goes to a salon now. My youngest daughter (3) goes to the salon about once a month just to have her fringe cut which only costs me $2. You could always try cutting your son's hair and if you mess it up then take him to the salon for them to fix it. Just be careful you don't cut it too short that they can't fix it.

P.S. If he doesn't sit still while you are trying to cut his hair you may have trouble and it might be best just to take him to the salon.

I do all of my kids' hair at home. I even color it if that's what they want. I always wanted to do hair butnever went to school for it. I usually start out with clippers with a Number 2 guard and start at the nape and move up to the crown. I shave the neck and by the ears and with no guard. I then even out the top with scissors. Or sometimes use the number 2 guard to run from the crown down towards the forehead. It depends on the thickness of the hair. My boys get a clean fade so to speak and I got happy results. They did confess that they like the salons better because of the gel, other than that you did alright mom! So I got them travel size gels to put in their hair. Makes it cheaper and easier. IF you take 13.50 x 12 months x 4 kids, it hits the budget at $648 a year. That's just an estimate for the cuts, let alone for the colors, or perms, or hair stylings. Get you a clipper set at the local department store with all the guards, combs and clippers and scissors. They have instructions in them to help you make the perfect cut! Good Luck--and hey if that don't work, I cut hair for free!

When my boys were little, I always used to cut their hair, simply because they were so shy and wary of everyone they would never have sat in a hairdressers, I did the best I could and just followed the way their hair grew and it turned out ok. My daughter is two at the moment and I have just trimmed her hair for the first time, I cut her a fringe in, which I was really wary about but it didnt turn out too bad, but I wont take her to the hairdressers until she is about 3 as I want her baby hair to grow out first before they start messing with the length. I have not cut the length of her hair. I also cut my own hair, this is because hairdressers never do what you ask but always do their own thing. But I think I am ready to have a change now so I am debating on going and having it done properly and then I will take my daughter too.

My older son's hair grows so fast that I have to take him for a haircut every month!!!
I used to take him to the salon every month....but it became too much trouble and when he was around 5, I just got a trimmer set (which had various settings and accessories...including a pair of scissors) and started doing it myself at home.
I ended up giving a better haircut than the one's at the salon.
Now, if you can do a better job that the salon is something that you will have to see. Try small bits at a time so that you don't end up with something that you can't live with. Once you get the hang of things...you will be a little more confident and can plan how you want to cut it.
Start out with a little trim every month...and if you are confident after the first few times...then you can move on to adventurous cutting...or else go back to the salon.
You can always hide a mistake with a cap ...now that he's not going to school yet.

sometimes we bring them (my nephew ) to salon.Since Kid's hair grow at a pretty fast rate,we decided to cut their hair on our own.Simple trimming doesn't need to be skillful and since they are still young, they wouldn't make a fuss about the style. As long as its short, clean and decent looking..Why bother to spend money at saloon when you can just buy your trimming tools on your own.But since your son is only 17 months, i think you should opt to visit the saloon, just in case your unskillful hands might hurt him.Baby's head is still very soft - you might not want to take risks.Well, just choose a saloon that willing to spend time on cutting baby's hair..you don't want them to rush over ..

I only cut one of my kids hair. I don't cut my oldest son's, and I don't cut my daughters. I cut my 10 year son's hair, though. He just wears it clipped close, so I invested in a pair of clippers and learned how to do it myself. That saves a little bit. I'd love to be able to cut my daughters hair. I'm just afraid to try it.

I do cut their hair. my son likes a buzz cut - easy job there
one daughter I just trim the bangs every couple of weeks another daughter I give a nice blunt cut with an undercut to flip the bottom under.
my husband I use the flowbee on...lol.
though the girl and I have also donated our hair to locks of love and with that we received a free hair cut and style. we gave a nice tip to the stylist but it did not equal what a cut and tip would normally cost combined.

came across this useful information
Giving HairCuts:
All haircuts are made up of these 4. the bob (0 degree) the wedge (45 degree) short layers (90 degree) and long layers (180 degree) the dree refers to the angle you hold the section of hair at form the root relative to the scalp.
Therefore:
1. section hair in 4 sections. front to back and ear to ear (wet of course)
2. section of thin sections and hold at desired angle and cut.
3. take out another thin section next to the first one and repeat using the first cut section as a guide for length.
For the bob- just make sure you are cutting the hair straight down. Any deviation will give you a layer you don't want. to get it to curl under (think prince valiant) make the length of the succeding sections longer than the original.
for the wedge- same as above but hold the hair away from the nape at 45 degrees.
short layers- 90 degrees all around the head. pretend you are giving a haircut to a porcupine.
long layers. easiest and most forgiving. just pull all the hair straight up. when i had my hair longer i would cut it myself by bending over combing all my hair straight down and cutting straigth across.
One more thing. haircuts like the "rachel" (of "friends" fame) is a combo of 45 degree at the bottom and 180 on top.

I take my girls to the Hair Cuttery. I have a friend who cuts her boys hair but they do wear their hair very close to the scalp.
My husband cut our daughter's hair her first time, just her bangs and it was horrible. LOL

I cut my sons hair myself. All you need is a good pair of clippers. They come with guards so you can't mess it up. I got mine at Wal-mart for $22. That's the price of two haircuts. I also cut my daughter's hair and until January of this year (2008) noone has touched my hair but one person one time since I was twelve I have always done it myself. It took my Mom about two years to talk me into this. And as she said I did love it. I just feel guilty paying $12 to get a haircut when that would buy something for my kids.
I say buy the trimmers and try it. You can also cut men's hair with them.

I have never cut either of my daughter's hair at home. My ex-husband has cut my older daughters hair and it looked terrible. I was MAD!
I have cut my son's hair at home but only around the ears. I don't try and give them full out haircuts.
I do cut my husband's hair at home but he just gets his whole head shaved. Before he started shvaing his head he had made me cut his hair before. It didn't turn out too bad but I didn't like doing it at all. Made me nervous!
At least his hair curls up when it is longer, so if I messed up you wouldn't be able to tell all that much. My boys have stick straight hair.

My 8 year old son has had 1 professional haircut in his life. I used to cut it all the time, but now his grandma cuts it for him. He likes it better when she does it. My daughter who is 14 months old this week has only ever had 2 small trims and her grandma did those.

Aww! I know how daunting a task like cutting a childs hair can be! Thankfully I haven't had to cut my daughter's hair yet (she's six months and barely has any hair) but I have cut my brothers before. Something you could do to make it easier, is get one of those special electric razor kits that has the attachments. With one of those, it's practically impossible to screw up! Use a longer one at first, and if it still looks too long when you're done, then use a shorter one. Repeat until you figure out which attachment works best for you! And you can always do a bowl cut too! Have someone hold a bowl evenly over the childs head, and then use the razor with a medium to short attachment and shev downards. I always thought bowl cuts were adorable on little boys. Especially blond boys.

I have been cutting my 19 month old son's hair for awhile now. I just can't bring myself to pay for it. He usually does a decent job sitting still for a few snips. I do okay with it. Besides, if I mess it up, it will look fine in a week or two cause his hair grows fast.

I just cut my son's hair tonight because I did not want to spend the money at the salon. It is the first day of middle school tomorrow and I completely ruined his hair. He hates me. He cried and cried. I cried and we cried together. He said it looked like he cut it himself. That was probably being nice. It is really messed up. I gave my son one of the worst memories of his life. I feel so awful I have taken the day off work and allowed him to miss the first day of school and I have been researching how to put in extensions for the past hour or so. Don't do what I just did...spend the friggin $25 bucks to get a pro to do it and then at least if they mess it up your kid won't blame you as much.
