My gram's house always smells like Serbian food..she's always cooking something for the family, we seem to always get over there for dinner and she always has something. I love the smell of her house!

I dont think I can describe this one. They just smell like grandparents houses. I wonder how they get that smell. Cuz only grandparents houses have that smell. Ive never been to a younger persons house that smelled like that.

Hi Sissyrl, to me, every house seems to have its peculiar smell. Even if I were blinkfolded and be led to a house I still could recognize it by the familiar smell.
Though my grandma had passed away quite a long time ago, your wonderful topic does make me to recall those old days of my grandma. You know on those old days women were really diligent in their work in order to keep their house neat and tidy. She would grumble the whole day if anyone made her things messy. She liked to arrange her stuff decently and orderly. What I admired most was her perseverance to keep the floor clean by mopping it regularly.
It was so comfortable to walk on it with bare feet. Even now I still could get the unique aroma of a kind of wood which she liked to burn in a small earthen tray for whole day long. The tranquil environment mingled with the fragrant smoke always made me impressive and memorable.

When I was growing up my grandmothers house always smelled so clean! She cleaned house every day of her life and it always reflected that. Then when I got married, she had lost interest in house cleaning and couldn't do it anymore so when my husband and I came up for a visit, from Texas to Virginia, we would do all that we could to get it clean once again even if it were for a little while. During that time, her house began to stink a bit because of having little dogs who would use the newspaper on the wood floors which eventually seeped into the wood and it stunk. We tried to get her to put the dogs out back in the fenced yard but she wouldn't hear of it. When she passed away years later, the house was in near ruins and had to be sold for much less than it would've been worth had she kept it up. I won't let it happen to my parents though. Some how I'll keep her house AND mine clean.

I never had the chance to know either of my grandmothers but my grandpa Richey's house smelled of peanut butter because he was always making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Now that I think back maybe he did that because I was always coming mooching for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. but peanut butter smell always reminds me of my grandpa.

Your hubby described smell of stagnation. When you live in the same space for a long time, you should constantly redesign the space ,so good energy is coming in.
Fresh air and reorganizing is very helpful.
Old people don't have that energy, so it is hard for them to do it.
My grandparents are no longer with us....

I love this one because I think about my grandmother all the time and how her house used to smell.
I wrote an article about it many years ago.
One of the things I enjoyed so much about going to visit my grandmother was knowing as I parked at the curb beside her house, how her house would smell. As I too the short walk from the side of her house, through the lush greenery, up the red painted walkway to her old fashioned screen door, the smell was always the same. The smell lingered in the air that surrounded her house. I learned to depend on it. While I remember the short walk to her door, I remember more how many times I would sniff the air, smelling that sweet aroma that was her signature. As I walked in the front door each time, I would stop and take a deep breath through my nose, enjoying the smell that said,"I'm at my Grandmother's house". The smell came from her kitchen, which you had to pass through to find her. If she wasn't in the den, past the kitchen, she was in her garden outside, picking fresh tomatoes or digging in the fresh dirt.
Each time I cook in my own home I think of my grandmother. I often smell that familiar smell as if she walked into my kitchen. The smell was always a mixture of fresh boiled sweet tea sitting on the stove and freshly sliced cantaloupe on the kitchen counter. It's a smell I'll never forget.

My papaw's house smelled like a basement. Now, before you laugh it wasn't the type of basement smell like gross and moldy, but like your washer and dryer was in there type smell. It smelled like downy and bleach. It was a clean house but, that smell always stuck to me. I loved it there, especially in the summer time. The windows were open and the fresh air came in, and it was clean. It especially smelled like the basement when it rained or they were doing laundry. Funny thing is, is the washer and dryer were upstairs on the back patio.
My old mawmaw's house smelled like old woman wearing onion deoderant. Everytime I seen this woman, she smelled like onions and so did her house. It wasn't the sweet smell either, her house was clean but it always smelled like rotten onions--YUCK!! I never did figure out why. hmmm...gets me thinking....
