I stumbled upon this news article at:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080310/ap_on_re_us/pharmawater_i;_ylt=AptbQSSq_mB07YbC4ynQp4FH2ocA
To me, it seems that we need to do more to purify our drinking water. It also seems that there are areas that people seem to be dependent on these pharmaceuticals that they're actually destroying our environment & even our wildlife.

I buy bottled water and I have heard the crazy things that have been found it in. but I know the stuff that is in my tap water is probably worse.. but right now I am forced to drink water for health reasons and I have no choice.. I could boil my own water or buy sterile/ distilled water but they have said that the water then lacks the minerals that our body needs and can lead to all kinds of health concerns from stroke to God knows what else.
nothing is good for us these days! lol!

they chlorinate our water.. and it's horrible! I even know when they do it! every Tuesday you can turn the faucet on and smell bleach really strong!
It really drives me crazy, because I HAVE to drink water.. and being picky about anything/ everything that goes into my body it really seems that I have no choice but to drink unsafe water.

I have used the pitchers that use activated charcoal. It is just a hassle. To be honest, I think the mnerals in my local water are good for me. In the town where I work the water tastes like sulphur and salt. Underground oil, I guess. Sometimes the principal buys bottled water for the staff lounge, but it runs out awfully fast. I find that water distasteful

Our local paper had an interview from our watter department that our water comes from deep underground and is purified by a layer of clay and that the places where theses things are problems is where the water sources are surface water. They run tests regularly and there are no pharmaceuticals in our water.

Lucky you. I did stumble upon another news article that the US Senate is getting involved with this AP News finding.

I read this too which really makes me think there need to be much stricter laws on purifying our water. After all who's to say that some of the problems ppl suffer from today isn't b/c of this problem.

Actually, I stricter laws in purifying our water may help. Looking at the whole situation, I kind of feel that the pharmaceutical companies & doctors who prescribe these medications shouls also bear some responsibility as well.

"They found trace concentrations of heart medicine, infection fighters, estrogen, anti-convulsants, a mood stabilizer and a tranquilizer." That was the quote from the NYC Water Authority...
What troubles me most about thi is that estrogen is turning up in lots of places...and the plastics that weuse mimic estrogen, so just howmuch estrogen am I getting on top of what my pre-menepausal body is creating?!
It's just a little scary.
I filter my tap water anyway - but - true, filters can't get everything.
I'm concerned about other things, like fuel residues. My water doesn't appear to have much large stuff except rust - that doesn't worry me. But when I go to clean my toilet, I find black residue under the rim all the time! What the heck is it? It accumulates in only one week, and when I lived in RVC, I never saw anything like it. RVC has their own water treatment plant, and it's the best tasting water I've had from a municipal water source.
I'm beginning to think that my town's water is polluted with some serious fuel residue, and I don't know how to get rid of it.
Thoughts, anyoone?

Several gas stations in our area had gotten shut down for that very reason (MSTB - I think it was called). Quite often, gas stations would get their gasolines tested for MSTB & unsuspecting gas station owners ended up suffering the consequences. The last I had heard from one gas station owner, it was the distributor in Brooklyn that supplied his gasoline that he was selling that was the problem, & they got their supply from New Jersey.

Unfortunately, we're also near New York City, where a lot of pollution had been generated. On 9/11/2001. we may not have been close enough to hear the explosions from when the planes hit, but we were close enough to end up having some of the foul stench reach our area a couple days later. Also, in my area, tap water tasted horrible, but cleared up after maybe two weeks.

That's the one KrazyKlingon - MSTB. They say that it smells faintly like turpentine. TO me, the water smelled a little like it had some king of Pine smell to it - and then I realized it must be MSTB. After reading up on it, I found out that most tests show it can cause cancer in high doses in mice, and will show up in the bloodstream if it is breathed in and showered in. It's still up in the air as to whether it causes cancer in humans (at least in small doses.) I use my filter for all drinking water, and have a shower fan that sucks out the fumes, which I find repulsive.
I just wonder why it would gather in black gooey gelatinous gloops in my toilet?! It looks like dirty petroleum jelly. Gross.
Fortunately we are getting off the well and onto better (but still sucky) water this week.
Oh, and btw: I looked up the history of MSTB leaks in my area, and they insist that the enarest one is too far away to affect our well. I think that the waterway nearby may be leaching into it, and lots of boats tend to leak gas as well as fumes in there. That's the one thing that the websites did say was a big contibutor to MSTB tainting.
I also found out that there was once a fuel oil company in the building next door to us...It never said there were tanks, but - there might have been...
Arg.
Ever feel like you're up against a wall when it comes to getting information about pollution?
The only way to be sure would be a $200 test that I can't afford.

our local water is disgusting.
i know they load it up with flouride, and in that levels,it supposed to be damaging to teeth.
it's also high in lime, and tastes like metal *yuck*
they were supposed to rebuild the drinking water facility,
but i don't think they've gotten around to it.i'm almost afraid to know what they dump in the environment from there.

Toothpaste contains some kind of fluoride. That's supposedly what prevent cavities. At the same time, in excessive amounts, it is toxic.

I am not surprised by this disclosure here as I had read about this sometime ago. For this is also the reason why I am a great advocater for water treatment systems to be installed at home.
I am currently using the Amway Water Treatment System at home.It is known to destroy more than 99.9% waterborne, diesase-causing bacteria and viruses in our tap water. Leting us have purified water for consumption.

There was just a story on our local news about this last night.
Now I'm beginning to doubt the effectiveness of my Britta Water Filter.
Some of this is just gross.
Time to start boiling tap water like I did back when I had to make baby bottles.

I have heard about this too and I thought I was ok as I drink bottled water, but apparently not, I think its really bad and quite scary we really dont know what we are putting into our bodies these days, we are told one thing but quite often turns out to be a totally different thing.
