My beagle pees on the floor every night...

My beagle is 3 years old, and she never goes on the floor during the day, but every single night she pees all over the floor. We have a tile floor, and I clean it up, so I wouldn't think odor is the reason she keeps going. We let her out before bedtime, and I've even tried picking up the water in the evening, but she still went! I tried crating her, but getting her in that crate was a HUGE ordeal. You wouldn't believe how fast that beagle can move! She hates the crate. Do any of you have the same problem? It baffles me that she only does it in the middle of the night. It's almost as if she's mad at us for going to bed and closing the door. She has company, our chocolate Lab, so I wouldn't think she's lonely. Just seems like she's mad and she does it out of spite. Any suggestions as to why she's doing this and how I can stop it? Thanks! -Listasaurus.com

I used to have the same problem. I asked my vet about it and she advised me to tap my dog's nose and hold her and face her to her pee, to let her know that it's a bad thing what she did. That was when she was a puppy. She would also see me use the same rug to clean it up. Eventually, she would pee on the rug! After a few months, she learned to go in front of the door, and put her nose on the door, letting us know that she needs to go out and do her business. When she wags her tail, that means she's going to do her business, when she her tail is down, she just wants to go out.

Your dog probably have 6th sense and knew about the crate! I do hope she continues not peeing during night times where she's not supposed to. Good luck!

Thank you. Only problem is, she's not a puppy anymore. She normally tells us when she has to go out, except at night when we're asleep. I've gotten a lot of great suggestions here. Thank you to everyone who's trying to help me out. I really appreciate it. Funny, I started this discussion yesterday, and last night she didn't pee on the floor. Maybe she knows I'm talking about her! Probably heard the one about the crate and said, oh, no! Lol.

I don't like the idea of putting a dog in a crate, but that's just me. Some dogs actually seem to feel safe inside a crate; the way to tell is by how willing they are to get inside, methinks.

Thank you for your advice. I agree, that would solve the problem! If I could just figure out a way... Please read my response to the above comment. If all of you guys could just come to my house every night and help me get her in the crate, I'd really appreciate it! ;)

My mom has a beagle who pees in the house all the time. During the night she gets up and pees. my mom limits her water but it doesnt work. Beagles are known for this. My mom use to crate her but my advise is dont start with the crate. Once my moms dog peed in the crate she thought that was her potty and therefor woulnt pee outside she used the crate all the time and it became a big problem. She finally got rid of the crate and put it downstairs. It;'s still an on going problem. She just put all new carpet down ans is getting a pet gate put in. She was to the vet and there was nothing wrong with her. I beleive in positive reinforcement. When I adopted my puppy I stayed up all night and took her out every ten mis. She never once peed or pooped in the house. Maybe a doggie diaper at night or take the time be patient and stay up watch her/him and take them out several times so they no this is where they go. AND DONT FORGET TO REWARD THEM. My moms beagle is 10 and has done this her whole life. I realize it is a hard thing. Good luck.

We had a similar problem with our collie about a year ago. She just started going in the living room and nothing seemed to deter her. We also have a tile floor and cleanup wasn't that much of an issue but it does get tiresome not to mention the odor. Here are some suggestions that we did and she did stop.
One is pick up an odor remover. They sell it at wal-mart and other stores that will remove any residue odor. You might not smell it but the dog can.
When she does go to the bathroom outside give her rewards for it. Treats of some sort work great for that.
I know you said she goes out before bed but you might try walking her, make sure she gets some excercise and actually does her business. Dogs need the excercise to have their bladders and bowels work right so it could be she's not getting enough at night to empty her bladder.
When she does go in the house point it out to her and tell her she is bad.
Hopefully that will help

You're very welcome and I do know how that is with the kids. Might try walking her after the kids are asleep? That's usually when we walk Lassie is around 11pm or so. Of course it does depend on how safe the neighborhood is and such.
I'll say hi to her for you :)

I would perservere with the crate. You may have some problems getting her in there, but, it will probably solve the problem. If you continue to give her the freedom, she will continue to do it. There's really no explanation why she's doing it, it becomes a habit.

Thank you! It's funny, the first time I put her in the crate, I had no problem. Thought the problem was solved. Then, the next night, I told my husband to put her in the crate before bed. I came out the next morning and she was out of the crate and had peed on the floor. I was irritated with my husband. When I asked him, he told me he couldn't get her in there. I said, "What does she do, put her legs out and grab onto the sides?" If I could do it, why couldn't a grown man, right? Then, I decided I would have to do it if he couldn't. So, I tried...and was impressed by the strength and agility my overweight beagle possessed. I was literally out of breath and my dog was officially freaked out. Tried again the next night, and the next, and finally dedided that if she hated it that much, then I wasn't going to do that to her. It's a really big crate, too, not like she doesn't have any room in there. I'll bet if I threw a steak in there she'd go in! But that could get expensive... ;)

No my dog never goes aywhere but outside. She has had some accidents but it wasn't her fault. I can't imagine what would be causing her to do that since you do let her out before you go to bed and take up her water. Maybe she needs to see a vet. Maybe she has bladder problems? You could put a diaper on her at night. Good luck!

Wow, this is perplexing. How early are you taking the water from her in the evenings? Do you have any idea what time she is doing this? It could be a matter of you needing to let her out one last time at nite, just a little later. She could have a very small bladder. I would recommend trying to wash the floor with a vinegar rinse, that will neutralize any lingering odor. Short of that, you may need to start crating her at nite. I know it's a pain, but if that will keep her from urinating on the floor, you may have to do it. It might be the only solution.

Hi, sorry to hear that. I don't like the idea of the crate either. Although it could be several things, have you taken her to your vet?
Also, it may be, as we can understand how many children can use the toilet during the day, they still wet their pants in the night time. And also, dogs don't have a toilet they can run to in the middle of the night if they were able. You take him on a walk after dinner, right?

I have used a toilet-training medicine before. I just can't remember the exact name. Whatit does is, you drop a few of the liquid onto a specific place that you want your dog to pee or poop at, and automatically your dog will do its business there. It gave out a scent that tells your dog this is the place to do his/her business.
Try to find it in a pet store. I only used it several times (less than 5 times) and my dog now is used to her potty place and therefore, I do not need to use the scent anymore.

One more thing.
Are you sure there's not a medical reason she does it? I believe a urinary tract infection could cause that too.

Wow, that's a tough one. I was going to say make sure you take up her water before you go to bed, but I see you've already tried that.
What are you washing the floor with? It's true that a dog can smell something even after we think it's clean. Make sure you're not using something with an ammonia base to it. Clean it good and then clean it again. And yes, try one of the sprays that's recommended for getting rid of urine.
Make sure everything is rinsed well when you're done, though.
