Is what is good good because the gods commanded it or did the gods command it because it was good? Any thoughts on this one?

Getting into the minds of the gods is such dangerous territory. So great is their might, so great is their mind. This question goes up there with "why was the earth created." The gods did what they wanted, at the peril of all in their vicinity. The myths of the gods show lessons in good and bad. So did the gods create for all so we could see the mirror of good and evil? Did they indulge themselves and create good, at the same time creating the demise of the balance of nature? Who now, who says he is one of the gods, gives a flying fig about the fallen nature of the human condition. For to be a god is to not be concerned with such trivial matters. To be a god is to see humans as mere ants! A statement to ponder. To be reunited to the realms of the gods, do we then need to become gods ourselves? In our spiritual evolution - what rung of the cosmological ladder do the gods reside? Is Zeus still looking down at us mere mortals? Does he laugh or have compassion for our smallness? My thoughts run amok here! My answer: The gods were indulgent and so indulged in what was good, at the expense of the balance of nature. However, at a higher level this question is perhaps a furphy, as to see good, we must know the difference. So did the gods command good to see what evil is? So perhaps Arhiman - the Prince of Darkness is in fact working for the Devine to show what good is.

Strange question... All I can tell you is that... What is good for someone is not necessarily good for someone else. We all have different ideas about what is good. Is there one thing that we can all agree is good for us all?

its not god who commanded good as good.(no i am not an athiest). its the people. over the centuries, people have accepted things told to them by their ancestors and these have come to be of common consensus and hence have been classified as good. for peaceful co-existance on the earth it is imperative that we abide by a certain code of conduct that does not harm the rest of the world and this is wat has been commanded as good.

Why are we saying 'gods'? Isn't there only one God? And when He stated something as 'good' then it is 'good'. Notice during the time God was creating the world back in Genesis. He called the first day good. (1st day being Sunday)....on the 2nd day of creation He did not call it good. (That would be Monday). I think that's why a lot of Monday's are not so good for so many people!

For those say that things are good because god(s) said they were, does this mean that your morality is entirely down to the deity you believe in? Books like the bible have some pretty disgusting acts of cruelty, torture, rape, and genocide in them, many of which are under the direct command of the god of the bible. Does this make it good? If not, why not?

Divine command theory is widely criticized by what is known as the Euthyphro dilemma ,after its first appearance in Plato's dialogue Euthyphro. "Is an action morally good because God commands it, or does God command it because it is morally good?" It implies that morality is arbitrary. If divine command theory is true, morality is based merely upon God's whim. Thus, if God had willed cruelty and dishonesty to be virtues, and mercy and charity to be vices, then they would have been. The natural reply to this objection is that God would not have commanded such things because he would not command evil.

What is good is good because a bunch of people once decided they wanted it to be good and they were strong enough to enforce it. Many decisions of The Church, for example, have little to do with God. Most of the times God is just a backup for what the spiritual leaders want. Now I'm waiting to be beheaded by the religious zealots swarming around myLot .

Doing good thing is always good when that good thing does some good to others. It is also good when you feel good about it. Even by doing that, if it is not affect other badly, that's also good. Then God will say 'Good, keep it up' GOOD bye...

well after some thought on this question ,i opened up the bible to genesis and it states in the first chapter that ,God created the sky and saw that it was good, then he made the seas and saw that it was good, and so on and so on,so i would say that God commanded it to be good for all that he made was good, hopefully i explained this well enough to understand..
