Mrs Dash - Salt alternative

Ever since I can recall I was a salt fiend putting tons on my food to flavor it. Now since my dad was diagnosed with congestive heart failure I have had to reduce his intake of sodium (salt) severely. I still use salt for me not dad, but very little and at limited times as well. But I have been using Mrs. Dash seasonings. I have used two types, table blend and original blend. It is a great alternative to salt as it has many different spices combined in it. I don't use it on my eggs though nor on my burgers. I have to have salt on eggs and burgers. But for dads I use the Mrs. Dash. So do you or have you ever used Mrs. Dash? Do you like it better than salt? Do you have certain foods that you just have to put salt on? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We always use something on our dishes, to add taste on it. I often use salt in my dishes, we have an alternative here that we call "patis" or fish sauce. It's a fish extract, it has a different smell (nasty, if you're not used to it) but does produce a good taste. I believe that there are some available on your local grocery stores there, bottled and somehow odorless(?). Also, it is all but natural, with no preservatives. We don't have Mrs. Dash here, so I haven't tried that yet.

IS this patis only available in the Philippines then? I've never seen nor heard of it. I'll have to check a few local co-op stores then. Is it also a fishy taste? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I believe there are some available on your place, try on some Asian stores and ask for fish sauce. It doesn't have a fishy-taste, it's an Asian condiment that can also be used for all-purpose cooking..

I do like mrs dash for seasoning my food - they have come out with quite a variety of blends too. I find that lemon is a good substitute for salt as well. I commend you for taking such a decisive action for the betterment of your father's and your health.

I am a *salt* person. I have to have some salt on just about every thing that I eat. Not a lot, just a little. I do enjoy some of the Mrs. Dash products though. The "extra spicy" is my favorite. Mix it with honey and mustard for a special spicy dipping sauce for things. I use to use Salt Sense until it raised its prices.

I use Mrs. Dash as well as True Lemon and Orange along with other seasonings in place of salt. I've just been diagnosised with high bp and have no clue why when I haven't used salt for several years. Now I'm going to have to figure out what is raising my bp cause one day it's normal and another day it's sky high.

You are so right there, Grandpa Bob. If it is indeed stress and not something medical, then guess hubby will have to go cause he's the only stress in my life.

It probably is stress. BTW, salt really doesn't have much impact on most people's blood pressure. It's something like 20% of the population that has to worry about it.

There are a total of thirteen different Mrs. Dash. My two favorites are Lemon Pepper and Garlic Herb. I am a big garlic nut. Have you tried going to mrsdash.com? You can get recipes there that are very good. Sometimes they even offer savings and free samples.

I have not used Mrs. Dash, but I do use lots of different herb seasonings, and I do find that I use less salt. I want a little salt on my baked potato, for sure. I will use lemon salt and pepper blend, which reduces the amount of salt. I love it on sliced tomatoes. I use Montreal Steak seasoning, it has salt, but less than if I used straight salt. It is yummy on burgers and steaks, and on cucumbers, believe it or not.

I need my salt and butter on my baked taters. But I find myself using less and less salt each day as time goes by. Guess that's a good thing? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I have not put salt on my food for over 25 years. I find the natural amount of salt in food enough. The ony exception is for chips. I don't mean the oven kind of chips, but the fatty ones bought from a takeaway shop. Then I put chicken salt on them. Instead of salt, I use pepper (lots), parsley, mint, oregano & coriander. I haven't heard of Mrs. Dash.

Hi Grandpa, Its organic salt for me. No particular brand. There is a health store which I frequented and they have a variety of organic salt available. You might like to check this one to get to know about the different kind of salts available. http://www.sheknows.com/articles/food-and-cooking/herbs-spices-seasonings/6994-Kosher-salt-organic-salt-and-sea-salt-Facts-types-and-uses.htm

I have not tried Mrs. Dash and I'm wondering whether it would be ok for those who are diabetic? my husband is and loves his salt and even though we have no salt in the house, I just thought maybe if Mrs Dash does the trick, then maybe he can use that from time to time. I actually don't have salt on my food and only eat salt when it is already on there

I'm on blood pressure meds and they don't recommend using salt substitutes because of the potassium contained in them. So I had a little foray into the Mrs. Dash's site just now. They all contain about 10 mg of potassium, but darned if I can see where it's coming from in the ingredients. I like salt on french fries and probably wouldn't bother to eat without. I guess I think because I'm on the meds I can use salt - bad logic. whit

I have no idea about the pottasium content etc in Mrs Dash. So that's not good for high BP? My wife has medium HP so this may concern her as well now. I just want my foods to taste good. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Unless she's on one of the ACE inhibitor medications, the potassium probably isn't an issue. Oh, I have to have the salt on the popcorn too. Oh, and have to have the salted butter if I'm using butter on bread too. If I'm eating, it has to taste good too.

Mortons Lite Salt - This is what I use and it tastes just like regular salt.
There is another type of salt that you could use and get the same taste but less sodium which is Mortons Lite Salt. I just found out that gif pictures do upload on here so here's a picture of it so you'll know what it looks like. Good luck! http://www.mortonsalt.com/products/foodsalts/Lite_Salt.htm

I love Mrs. Dash. I have three kinds right now here at home. I have the garlic&herb kind, the table blend, and the southwest chipotle. I love the southwest kind. I love spicy food, but my hubby doesn't use that one ever since he had his surgery because he can';t eat spicy foods. I think that Mrs. Dash is a good alternative to salt. I also have to have salt on my eggs, but I put Mrs. Dash also. I have come to the thing now where I am beginning to enjoy Mrs. Dash more than salt. I don't know if I could ever totally give up salt though.
