Since I've never used Vista I can't personally say anything bad about it. All I know is what I have read about it and so far nothing good. I'm very happy with Win XP and especially like that it has the recovery program in it. I don't know if Vista does or not. I've heard that Vista is not compatible with a lot of programs but they keep coming up with new upgrades. I don't know if they have to be paid for or not. Whatever you decide to do I wish you a lot of luck!

As you probably know, Vista is the newer OS to XP and new OS usually will have lots of bugs initially....Just like XP when it was first out...
Vista is a lot easier to install, has better looking interface and it has DirectX10....But the downside is the hardware requirement is quite high and a lot of applications do not run well on it...
XP is slightly older since its launched in end 2001, early 2002 but its seasoned and with the upcoming Service Pack 3, it is a very reliable OS to date and is compatible with most applications...However, it does not have DirectX10....but if you are not a fussy gamer, you probably won't mind the slight difference..
If I were to choose, I would choose XP....but if you are buying a laptop, its better to get Vista because you need to futureproof your laptop since you won't be upgrading to a new one very soon anyway...Not to mention, its expensive to get a new laptop...
