Are We Ready for a Gay President in the United States?

People keep asking the obvious questions around here... are we ready for a woman president and are we ready for a black president? Well, what about a gay president? Are we ready for that?
Unfortunately, I think most people wouldn't be able to overlook being gay and they'd vote against that candidate no matter how much they agreed with the issues. By most, I mean at least 50%.
I know there has been some speculation that George Washington was gay, but I mean an out of the closet president. What do you think?

Know what would be FABULOUS?!?! A black lesbian president! That would cover all the bases and we could finally move out of the stone ages

What about Latinos, Asians, and native Americans? Or don't they count as people?

Sadly I think you are right about that.
We can't even get gay marriages or unions passed.
It will be great when the day comes when no one cares about this petty things.

I bet it will kind of be like when my grandparents tell me that black people used to have to drink from a separate water fountain. I was like, "What? Seriously?!"
I'll be telling my grandchildren... "You know, me and your grandmother got married right when gay marriage became legal here..." "WTF? It used to be illegal?!"

LMAO!!!
I can see that now!
Will be a great story though huh?!
Someways it's nice being apart of history...but in other ways it sucks too.

I wouldn't vote for a man or woman just because he/she was a gay person. However, an openly gay candidate would project a certain honesty that I think is lacking in most of the list we have to choose from. I would take it in to account, along with a score of other factors.

I do not believe that one should choose the president for his gender preference, his gender, or the color of his skin. Choosing a president should be for his issues and a homosexual president would also be against the traditional family, and a lesbian president would also be against the traditional family. You cannot get a child from a man to man unless you have a woman involved, and since a homosexual who is out of the closet, will be uncomfortable with women except as a close platonic friend, it would not work.
We have a homosexual mayor in our city for a term, and I am sure that many voted for him because he was a homosexual. So that would be more of a danger than people voting against because of being gay or homosexual. That is what you have to watch out for.

Exactly. Many couples are unable to have children naturally.
Personally, I think I'd end up adopting or at least fostering children rather than giving birth. But who knows, maybe I would want to have one child of my own. But more likely, I'd choose to adopt.

I know many gay people and they are not against traditional family values. In fact for many of them, that is just another painful part of their being born gay....the fact that they are not able to bring children into the world naturally. But then again, like hetro couples that are unable to bear children, they come to terms with it and find alternative ways. Also lets not forget that not every couple desires to have children. They still have family values. I think, suspenseful, that your answer was shallow and not well thought out.

Georgy gay? Come on, lets say at least bi.That would put a new twist on "Washington sleep here".I thought we have had a gay president but I forgot which one.I would hope we were ready for a openly gay president with a partner but I don't think so. If we really were, gay marriage would be on the books in every state.

I don't know how I missed this, but now I am curious about which president was thought to have been gay if not Washington. I think you could be right on the bi thing though. But then again, I think most people are probably bi to some degree.

By my response, I must have been talking about George Washington. I remember hearing that there was a rumor about one of the Presidents, the one who never married, but I can't remember his name.

I do not think that we are ready. I'm gay, and I'm all for gay rights and women presidents and everything but right now, I just don't think our country is ready for a gay president. There is way too much drama going on right now over whether or not gays are evil, morally wrong, or going to hell and then there is the big debate over whether they should be allowed to marry or not. So, at this time it's just a bad idea.

i think it'd be fine but I doubt the world would. There is far too much predjudice still around even with blacks and women. If you read some of the discussions here, it is evident that there are many people that for some reason still are against gay people. It is ridiculous but true.

I wasn't. I really thought that racism was pretty much a thing of the past. It was thru this election that I saw many racists jump from their proverbial closets and show their true colors. I was shocked at how much racism still exists. It kind of makes me afraid for Obama.

I am very afraid for Obama. I don't live in a racist area at all, but I can definitely see hints of it all over the place. I don't agree with a lot of thing Obama does, but I think it would be absolutely horrible if he were to be assassinated by some racist.
