Have you done it? Will you do it? We are talking about real human children here. No offence but let's not include pets as our children in this discussion. :P I would think it is a delicate thought process when deciding the names of our offspring. We want them to grow up proud of their names and we want the names to hopefully mean something positive that they will grow into. Sounds easy? I doubt! We all have our list of famous people - Bill Gates, Abraham Lincoln, Christopher Columbus, Lord War Wizard, etc. They may be our idols and we might want our children to grow up to be like them. But have you, will you name your children after them? What if the shoes are too big for them to fill? What if people start comparing? What if...? I know of a local "celebrity" couple who named their daughter Sage. Sage is not a famous person, rather, it is a "title". Take it literally - sage means someone immensely wise. I was just thinking, what if she grows up retarded or just average - wouldn't that be a huge dent in her ego? So, will you name your children after famous people? Or choose "neutral" names? Or...? Do share your thoughts. =)

I don't think so , infact numerologists believe that our names do influence our lives in somr or the other way. My brother's name was spelt with single a and astrologer adised him to change his name to spell with double a and he did so and suddenly his career graph changed with in three months. The oppurtunities came along and over the years his life has changed for the better. His hardwrk is also responsible but he was kind of laid back person but suddenly he became serious for his studies and career and today he is successful in all means of life. That person also asked me to change my name and I never did and you can make the connection, lol.

All of my kids names were inspired by other people or things, but none of them celebrities or famous people. I would never do that. I think some of the names celebrities are giving their kids are rediculous. My oldest daughter was named after a girl I used to babysit when I was a kid. I just loved her name and said that one day when I have a daughter, I'm going to name her the same, and I did! My son was named partly after my grandfather and partly after his grandfather. My youngest daughter was named after a beany baby, lol! I used to collect them and one day we were at the Mall of America and bought a few. We looked at the name of one and decided that was what we were going to name the baby if it was a girl. It's a normal girl's name, we were just undecided until then. I just saw on the news that a woman who is a big Bon Jovi fan had a baby a few days before the concert so she had to give up her tickets. She named the baby Joviana, after Bon Jovi and her mom, Diana. How crazy is that!

I guess you can say I named two of my children after famous people. Well, not famous people such as celeberties persay, as the way you have stated. But two of my children are names taken from the Bible. One is named Caleb and the other Isaac.

I think that is still fine... most people have "Christian" names too, whether they are baptized or not.

I think it would be pretty unusual for people to start comparing the child to the person they were named after. And yep my next child will be named after someone famous.

personally, I want to formulate the names of my offsprings in the future. It would be the combination of my future husband's name and mine. :)

Choosing a child's name is something that is a personal decision for a parent. But, they really need to choose it wisely. Fortunately when the child reaches a certain age they can petition the courts to have their name changed if the so wish. Unfortunately, they will have to wear their given name until that day. Or, they can go by a nickname.

We actually did consider this with our second child if she were to be a boy. Now I don't normally give out family names on here but for the sake of this discussion I will. I have a brother named Tim, my husband has a brother named Tim. My husband's name is Allen. We considered naming our baby boy Timothy Allen and calling him, you guessed it, Tim Allen. I had a girl so I don't know whether we would have gone through with it or not. Probably too many Tim's in the family. But when I told my parents about it, they were going to tell my brother and I wouldn't let them because it was still seriously under consideration. But I think it was only because they were family names. I don't think there is a celebrity out there that I like enough to name a child after. Look at Tom Cruise. God forbid I had named a child after him when he was sweet and cute and a loyal husband to Nicole Kidman, and then to see him turn out the way he is now! Poor kid. I can just imagine the number of people who named their daughters Britney after Britney Spears, but unless they made the middle name Spears, there would be no connection. But myself, as a parent, knowing I had named my child after a person who seemed wonderful at the time and then went in the wrong direction, the guilt and shame would get the best of me. I guess that's why some people stick with family names... or invent new ones.

After 3 The Santa Clauses and Wild Hogs, I think Tim Allen is a big name, he's just a different sort of hot shot. The comedians are in a whole different category than the serious actors. Tom Cruise? I think he's off his rocker. I have been on anti-depressants for years and tried to go off but immediately felt myself spiralling into depression. It is the cause of a chemical imbalance. Tom Cruise is very anti-medication and has criticized others for using them. Plus jumping like a monkey on Oprah's couch was a little out there.

But "Tim" is not some big shot, is he? Tom Cruise? What happened to him? I thought he is very happy with Kate (?) and he is now a great messiah of Scientology. He has not gone bankrupt yet and is leaving the "high" life. What's so bar?

I would not like to name after a celebrity, b'coz: 1) If the child becomes good, people would say due to the very name and he/she will not get the due credit, despite labouring. 2) If the child become bad, again people would say he/she is ruining the 'credentials' of the famous person. 3) I would like my child to become a new celebrity / icon of his/her own. It is better to imbibe good qualities of a famous person only, rather than just becoming like a shadow. Shadows are having less life

Isn't it sage also a plant? maybe the parents liked that plant for some reason :) I don't think I would like to name my kids after some person famous or not just because of that particular person. I would have to like the name and to be something that wouldn't bring any special negative images. Like for example calling my daughter Brandy LOL If there was a famous person that I admired and that person had one name that I liked I might make it a part of my child's name but not the whole name I think.

LOL not for a daughter of mine hehehe Brandy is best in a decanter :) I know that sage comes more to mind in the sense that you used it. I remember the plant because of a song from Simon and Garfunkel - and if I was in any way hiding my age, this would tell you all heheheheh

Yea, it is a plant as well but Sage, the plant, seldom plants itself in my path so it didn't occur to me. I kept thinking of sage as that wise one only. Hey, Brandy is actually a neat name LOL.

I won't name my children after anyone famous, I don't idolise anyone that much that I'd want to name my children after them!! I do, however, like Biblical names, especially male Biblical names, such as Jacob, Joshua, Caleb and Elijah. If I had children and they were boys, I'd love to call them any of those names.

I have 4 children (2 girls 2 boys). when i was in my teens both my sister and i said that we were going to name our daughter Falena (It was a girls name in an old Marty Robbins song). We both have two daughters and not a Falena among them. I guess when we got older common sense prevailed.

No never.I find it very crude and harsh to impose lour fancies on our innocent children.I know many youngsters who are not comfortable with their names of some old Soviet bard,a French cook or a Chek painter. It looks very odd.The best thing you can do is you can change your name into the one you like.

I named my son after my favorite baseball player. His middle name is Mattingly. Don Mattingly played first base for the New York Yankees for 15 seasons and was my favorite player. So, yes, lordwarwizard, I have done that.

Well i guess i wont name my children after some famous person's name. I prefer staying neutral and giving my children their own identity rather than some famous persons identity. To become famous its the determination which is required and that comes from parents and the kids themselves. I dont think the name will help them get that determination. May be to some extent it can but it wont help them 100%. I would prefer my children to gain their own identity rather than getting influenced by some others name and fame.

My children's names are Chandler Colin, Griffen Walker, Justice Victoria and Millanah Devin. When we named Chandler the show Friends was popular but I had never seen it. I don't know how many times we were asked if we had named if after the character on Friends. Umm, no. My ex really liked the names Monica and Rachel too. Not only do those names not fit what I like in a name; by that time I HAD seen the show. There was no way I was using TWO names from that show; even if it had nothing to do with the reason for the name. And my brother's name is Joey. We liked the name Aeon when I was pregnant with Mimi (Millanah) but we knew people would have a hard time spelling it and pronouncing it her whole life. Plus, I am not keen on naming my child after a movie. I like Anakin too; but I would never use it. These are all character names though, not real people. I know lots of people that use their sports heroes as a part of their children's names.

As much as possible I would like give a unique name for my child but it is okay if I name them after the famous people. Incase, my child is just average person then I wouldn't worry about that. Even if I name him/her after famous people, she/he still has his own identity and skills so I wouldn't worry about that much. Cheers!
