If I receive payment for my work during the next week, then I have not been cheated! But somehow I have some bad feelings regarding this project. Freelancing is a risky business, isn't it?
Reasons:
1. You hardly get the see the person you are working for. He/she might live halfway across the world!
2. You have to deliver first and then get paid.
3. And after delivering, where is the guarantee that the person will pay you?
Of course, people have paid me, but I know friends who have been cheated once or twice. I will be glad to receive your comments, suggestions, and tips regarding this. Cheers!

I've been a freelance copywriter for about 15 years. I've only been "stiffed" 4 times during that period -- twice by friends, believe it or not, and twice by reputable companies who just were arrogant and didn't think they needed to pay.
After this amount of time and a legit business with a great portfolio, I ask for payment up front from new clients. People who have worked with me in the past and paid on time get to wait until after the job is done to pay, but most of them offer to pay either up front or at mid-project.
What type of freelancing are you doing? If it is for publications, they generally have a contract or agreement ensuring you'll get paid (reputable pubs, anyway). If you're working for small businesses, you should be able to get at least a portion in advance before you begin the work, if not all of it.
Don't be afraid to ask for the money you deserve for your work! Good luck!

Thanks for that valuable input. Unfortunately, I am still in the beginning stages of freelancing. I gave up teaching for freelancing recently. :) But I am wiser with regard to payments now. For my recent project, I have requested payment at mid-project. Cheers and happy mylotting.

Dear friend i fully agree with you. It is very difficult to trust anyone whom we personally dont know and that too someone who is living miles away. Just yesterday i read in this forum that a person was cheated for freelancing though he was paid initially. So your fears are not unfounded. But let me hope that you will get paid and even if you dont get paid i advise you to stick on as winning and losing is a part of each game and nobody can emerge winners each and every time. What i mean to say is that all are not bad in this world... i am writing this from my personal experience:) So gud luck and all the best. I'll keep my fingers crossed to hear from you that you GOT PAID!!
