After speaking with a family member who has an exchange student, I decided that it sounds like a great learning experience for the exchange student and for my family. Therefore, we are due to have our first exchange student arrive in August of this year. My children are just as excited as I am, yet they don't understand why we have to wait until August, they want her to come sooner..=) We are scheduled and arrangements are being made for a 16 year old female from Germany to come live with us for one semester of school. I am curious as to the experiences that any other host families have had with exchange students. If you have any advice, please feel free to share that too. Thanks in advance for any responses. Have a great day everyone!

My Aunt on my Dad's side took in an exchange kid every year for years. It was a little different but all in all it worked out...she had 9 kids of her own so after awhile they all just blended together.

Yeah I would say after 9, they would seem to blend together..if you already have 9, what is one more..lol I have a girlfriend who has 5 and I have 3, so when we get together, we don't usually mind if any of them have friends with them, because once the 8 of them are together in the same house, we don't really notice any other kids being there..lol Thanks for the response. Have a great day!

It's a wonderful experience... When my children were in jr high school we had a Japanese student come and live with us for a short time...it was beyond words...we loved him and he loved us...the language barrier was tough yet taught us all alot...Food was the biggest change for him...but we tried to incorporate japanese food...we had many nights of laughter about my japanese cooking skills!!!
We saw our city, state and schools in a new light..through the eyes of a newcomer...what a joy!!!
I would do it again in a heartbeat!!
Enjoy!!!

Yes, I am looking forward to learning a lot about her culture. I hope that she knows how to cook and can teach me some new recipes. That will be fun..and, well interesting to see if my family and I will eat it. I am not sure about the food in Germany. I don't even know what some of their main staples are. She has studied English a good number of years, so I am not too concerned about the language barrier. I believe we will be just fine. Thanks for sharing your experience with me. Have a great day!!!

I've made an exchange with a girl in Paris and it was a pleasant experience even if it lasted only 3 weeks.
My class went to Paris in December and they came here in Italy in March. Everyone lived in a different family.
I think it would be a pleasant experience for your children, advice them to integrate the girl with their friends and talk to her only in english and not in german, she has to learn .
One of your daughters will go to Germany then? If the answer is yes I advice her not to be nervous or try to impress german people, just try to be herself

That is wonderful that you had a pleasant experience with the girl from Paris. My children will certainly include her in things they do and will introduce her to their friends...I am just hoping that isn't a fight, who gets to spend more time with her..lol. She does speak English rather well, so I don't think that will be much of a problem. I only have one daughter and no, she won't be going to Germany..maybe later on in life, when she is older but right now she is only 11. Thanks for the response. Have a great day!

We had an exchange student from Switzerland my Sr. year of high school. She was also a Sr., and also my only experience having a sister. It was (and still is) an awesome experience! At the time, we had our ups and downs, but looking back on it was such a unique experience! Her family has come here to visit many times, and everyone in my family has been to visit her's in Switzerand every now and then. She was a bridesmaid in my wedding, and I went over for hers. She comes to visit our family about once a year (for the past 10 years!) I also know that I'm welcome at their house at any time. It's an experience that truely changed our lives, and I hope it's as beneficial for your family as it was for ours.

That is great, that your experience was so beneficial. I too, hope that it is for my family also. The thing about having a sister, it will be my daughters only experience at having a sister and she is really looking forward to having an older sister to share her room with. I know that may lead to a few problems but also, I think it will be good for my daughter. Being that I only have one girl, she has never had to share her bedroom, whereas, the boys have most generally always shared a room. I can't wait and I hope that we end up with life long friends from this experience. Thanks for the post, have a great day!

Wow!Sounds good! But,also, there would be some problems. After all you don't live in the same culture, there are many differences between the cultures. So you both should try to understand each other.Ah,by the way don't worry about that ,although there are some problems it will be OK!lol
what'more,do u like cooking and have you experienced Chinese food?I like it not only because its good tast but also the interest I got when cook it! Have a fine day!

Yes, we have taken into consideration that there could be some problems. I am sure she is just like any other child and will have her days..but we will deal like with that. I am excited to learn about the difference of our cultures.
To answer your question, I have never cooked chinese food. I have been to a chinese restuarant (one with a buffet, so I can pick and choose). I have never been a big fan of chinese food, but there are a few things I like.
Thanks for your post and have a great day!

That sounds like a fun family experience! I have never actually hosted a student, but I knew an exchange student from Germany back in high school. One time I was giving her a ride home and I got pulled over (supposedly I had not made a complete stop at the previous intersection - he let me off with a verbal warning). But she freaked out when the policeman turned on his lights to pull me over. I'm not quite sure why she reacted the way she did (I'm pretty sure she was from the liberated part of Germany at that time) but I had to calm her down as I pulled over and waited for him to approach.
I also had a friend who went as a foreign exchange student to Australia for a whole year. When she came back she totally had the Aussie accent and dialect. It was cool. Plus she got away with driving over there since they do their month/day reversed.

Humm, I don't know why she would have freaked out like that either, interesting. Maybe she had a bad experience with police in Germany, who knows. I know that the father of the girl we are hosting is a Police officer and I am a part-time officer as well, so I figure she is okay with police..lol. The australia trip would be awesome. I have always dreamed of going there. That is where my dream vacation would be, and I WILL go there someday. Thanks, for the response! Have a great day!
