It's a problem everywhere, Laura.
I worked customer service for the postal system (nationwide) and I believe that was probably the number one complaint we got.
There's not a whole lot you can do to prevent it, there is always going to be human error. Be kind to your postal carrier, though, because it's not really their fault. The mail is sorted and stacked by someone else before they even get to the post office to pick it up and start their route.
Some of the carriers might catch a piece here and there, but it's usually bundled where they don't even see each piece individually, they just loosen it prior to putting it into your box.
Your best bet is to just put it back into your box with a note and your carrier will get it to the right person (unless it's your buddy next door and you want to drop it off).
You can call and complain and it will filter down to your local post office and employees will be told to be more diligent, but again, the system and the people aren't perfect.

I better clarify something.
If you're getting someone else's mail mixed in with your own on a particular day, it's probably not the carrier's fault.
If you're getting ONLY the mail belonging to someone else on that day and none of your own, it MAY be your carrier's fault.
And yes, high volume mail days are bad because they're trying to get more done in the same amount of hours, and substitutes are always an issue because they don't know the route, and if they've been called in when a regular carrier is out sick, sometimes they get on the road later.
I'm not excusing, just explaining ...

That is such a pet peeve of mine. I used to just take it to the correct person (unless the address was way off). Now, I just get the stack, put a rubberband around it, and put a note on it that says "Please deliver to the correct address." and shove it back in the mailbox.
Happens to me all of the time. Which leads me to worry, where is my mail going?

I get my neighbors mail sometimes and they get mine. I do surveys online also and sometimes they send me products to test and I never receive them some of the times. I usually give mu neighbor their mail, but sometimes I get someones mail who does not live on my street, so I put it back in the mail box and have the mail lady to pick it up and take it to who it belongs to.

We live in apartments so we end up with mail from the previous tenants all the time. I just write on it "RETURN TO SENDER" and stick it back in the mail. You'd think after almost 2 years they'd figure it out.

You shouldn't throw away someone else's mail, remember tampering with mail is a federal offense...
I usually give it to my neighbor and they do the same for us..But one time I did put the mail back in my mail box with a post it note explaining that it wasn't my mail and I only did that because even though I would get 1 or 2 pieces of mail that is my neighbors, this time it was a lot of mail and knowing my neighbor, she would have gotten the poor mail carrier fired..
Mistakes happen, when the carrier has their route, they put together the mail that goes to each address and sometimes by accident mail gets mixed up..So the best thing you can do is either give it to the person it is addressed to or place it back in your mail box for the carrier to take it..

That used to happen to us all the time, but it has gotten better lately. We had a new letter carrier almost every other week for awhile and they kept messing up. If it was a neighbor, I would just take the mail to them. But it's someone else's name with our address, I just write "return to sender/not at this address" with a big X through the name and an arrow to the return address. If it wasn't an address nearby, I just take it back to the postoffice and throw it in the box. Although, they probably don't like that.

Our postman is always delivering wrong mail to our door which leaves me wondering does he send our post elsewhere too? Normally it's for neighbours, so I will go round and post it in their doors and hope they do the same for us. It has happened quite a few times, sometimes they are stupid mistakes and I fear they are lazy.

I've done the same, taken to the neighbor, put it back in the mail box, and thrown it away (junk mail only). It drives me crazy because I have always wondered where my mail was going and what those people were doing with mine. I did last year get a piece of mail that had been sent to the wrong address - the person who got it obviously gave it back to the mail person because there was a note 'wrong address' handwritten on it and then you could see where someone had corrected the error. Funny thing is it was a birthday card from my Mom - she transposed the numbers in my house number.

Oh I hate that! Depending on if I knew who the person is is if I'll deliver it or not. If I don't know the person then it'll go back into my mail box and up goes the flag so it'll be picked up the next day. If I get too many of them then I'll file a complaint with the post office.
